What a lucky crocheter I am! AllFreeCrochet contacted me to review some yarn and create a crochet project with it. I was a little hesitant because what if the yarn wasn’t that great? I should have known I’d have nothing to worry about with AllFreeCrochet – they sent me seven skeins of Lion Brand’s Cotton Ease yarn, which I had already worked with and love. It’s a great year-round weight yarn with just the right combination of cotton and acrylic, making it durable, easy to care for, and reasonably priced while not sacrificing quality and texture.
I hope you’ll enjoy making the Radiance Lap Throw with this wonderful yarn. If you’re interested in learning more about this yarn then read my review!
This project was hard to get started only because I had so many ideas running through my head! As I sat there with all of the skeins of yarn in front of me, my husband asked what’s up with my puzzled look. So, I asked him what he thought I should make with the yarn. He looked and moved the colors around, trying different color combinations, and then proclaimed that I should make a blanket, but a round one, using just four of the different colors and keeping it simple. Well, the man had a great point, so I started on what turned out to be a great child’s blanket or lap throw because four skeins aren’t enough for a large throw, but you could certainly make a larger version with more yarn. (I’ll be planning and making another project with the three remaining skeins of Berry.)
This is a great project for a beginning crocheter who’s tired of making potholders and scarves! All you need to know is how to make the double crochet stitch and the slip stitch, and you can start working in the round (no turning to do either!).
- One skein of each: Color A – Almond (# 099), Color B – Maize (# 186), Color C – Terra Cotta (# 134), and Color D – Lime (# 194)
- G hook
NOTE: I had an extra skein of Almond already in my stash, so I used it to create the border at the end; if you don’t want to have to buy a second skein, make a few less rounds of Almond at the beginning and save it for the border.
Round 1: (RS) With Color A, ch 3, 12 dcs into third ch from hook, sl st to top of first dc
Round 2: Ch 2, 3 dcs in same st, [ch 2, skip next st, 3 dcs in next st] 5 times, ch 2, sl st to top of first dc (not the ch 2 at the beg)
Round 3: Ch 2, 1 dc in ch-2 sp to the right (work behind current position), [1 dc in next st, ch 2, skip next st, 1 dc in next st, 3 dcs in ch-2 sp] 5 times, 1 dc in next st, ch 2, skip next st, 1 dc in next st, 2 dcs in last ch-2 sp (where you made the first dc), sl st to top of first dc
Round 4: Ch 2, 1 dc in same st, 1 dc in next st, [3 dcs in ch-2 sp, 1 dc in next 2 sts, ch 2, skip next st, 1 dc in next 2 sts] 5 times, 3 dcs in ch-2 sp, 1 dc in next 2 sts, ch 2, sl st to top of first dc
Round 5: Ch 2, 1 dc in same st, 1 dc in next 2 sts, [ch 2, skip next st, 1 dc in next 3 sts, 3 dcs in ch-2 sp, 1 dc in next 3 sts] 5 times, ch 2, skip next st, 1 dc in next 3 sts, 3 dcs in ch-2 sp, sl st to first dc
Round 6: Ch 2, 1 dc in same st, 1 dc in next 2 sts, 3 dcs in ch-2 sp, 1 dc in next 4 sts, [ch 2, skip next st, 1 dc in next 4 sts, 3 dcs in ch-2 sp, 1 dc in next 4 sts] 5 times, ch 2, skip next st, 1 dc in last st, sl st to first dc
Continue this process of making 3dcs in each ch-2 sp, 1 dc in each st, then [1 dc, ch 2, skip next st, 1 dc in next st] on top of each cluster of 3 dcs below (in other words, 1 dc on top of right hand dc of the 3 dcs, ch 2, skip middle st, 1 dc in left hand dc of the 3 dcs) in each round.
Make 14 rounds with Color A, 6 rounds with Color B, 5 rounds with Color C, and 4 rounds with Color D.
To Make The Border:
Round 30: With Color A, ch 2, 1 dc in same st and each st until you reach ch-2 sp, [3 dcs in ch-2 sp], 1 dc in each st until you reach 3 dcs below, [2 dcs in right hand dc, 1 dc in center, 2 dcs in left hand dc], repeat around and sl st to first dc
Round 31: ch 2, 1 dc in same st and each st until you reach 3 dcs, [2 dcs in center of 3 dcs], 1 dc in each st until you reach the [2 dcs, 1 dc, 2 dcs] below, [2 dcs in center single dc], repeat around and sl st to first dc
Round 32: ch 2, 1 dc in same and each st around, fasten off.
