Do you have a lamp that needs a new look and a stash of yarn that you love and would like to incorporate into a new decorative element in your home? Well, here is a super easy project that you can make with just these two elements.
For this project you will want a lampshade frame that has a top wire ring that attaches to the harp. Originally this lamp had a drum shade looked like these:
I happened to find this lamp on the side of the road on garbage day which is the best day to find discarded items in my neighborhood. People put stuff out in the “free zone” aka the parkway that are still good and functional. Most items are gone within the day. The shade was a bit dull and slightly discolored so I thought I’d rip off the paper and make a new shade with my beautiful stash of yarn which I want to use in as many home dec items as I can.
I started out by gathering up my light blue yarn stash.
I determined the length I liked and felt was proportionate to the height and diameter of the lamp base. I trimmed up the yarn after I had finalized the spacing and stripes.
As you can see by my final yarn shade photo I switched it up and made the light blue yarn accent thin stripes in between wide white yarn stripes. That is what is so fun about this project. The yarn is simply draped over the top lampshade wire ring so you can move the yarn around as much as you like.
If you want to secure it when you are happy with your final yarn layout a bit of glue or tape could be applied to the inside of the top of the ring.
NOTE: I also swapped out the standard bulb for a low temp modern bulb and was careful that none of the fibers were touching the bulb.
You can play with how much light comes through by how dense you place the yarn. More light will come through if you place less yarn on the ring and less light if densely place yarn on the ring. I hope you like this recycled lampshade project and give it a try with your yarn stash.
