From Thursday, December 4th until Monday, December 15th, we here at Stitch and Unwind will be running a different giveaway each day. Check back with us every day to see a wonderful new pattern and prize that you can win!

12 days of Christmas Giveaways

On the 11th day of our 12 Days of Christmas Giveaway, my true love gave to me, a Frosty Hat from Jimmy Beans Wool.

Today’s Project: Frosty Hat

Frosty Slouch Hat

 

 

 

 

 

 

Designed By: Kristen Ashbaugh-Helmreich of Marinade Designs and Jimmy Beans Wool

Materials:

  • 2 balls Debbie Bliss Rialto DK
  • 1 ball Debbie Bliss Angel
  • US size 8
  • 16” circular needle (optional)
  • US size 8 DPNs
  • 1 stitch marker
  • 2 or 3 buttons for decoration (optional)
  • Tapestry needle

Size:
Fits adult head circumference 20-22”

Gauge:
19 sts = 4” in garter stitch

Abbreviations:
k-knit
p-purl
pm-place marker
k1f&b-An increase. Knit one stitch in the front, then in the back of the same stitch.
K2tog-A decrease. Knit the next two stitches together as if they were one stitch.
SSK-A decrease. Slip two stitches from the left to the right needle and knit the slipped stitches together.

Instructions:

With a strand of the Angel and Rialto DK held together, CO 84 sts
Join for knitting in the round and knit in k2, p2 rib for 2”
Increase round:
*k5, k1f&b; repeat from * to end of round (98 sts on needles)
Garter Stitch pattern:
Rnd 1: purl
Rnd 2: knit
*repeat Rows 1 & 2 until hat measures 7” tall, ending with a purl round.
Decreases:
Rnd 1: *k2tog, k10, ssk, pm; repeat from * to end of round
Rnd 2: purl
Rnd 3: *k2tog, k to 2 sts before next marker, ssk; repeat from * to end of round
Rnd 4: purl
*repeat rounds 3 & 4 until there are just 2 sts left between each marker, switching to double point needles as needed.

Last round: *k2tog; repeat from * to end of rnd. (7 sts left)
Finishing:
Cut yarn leaving at least an 8” tail and thread darning needle with the tail of the yarn.
Run needle through each of the remaining stitches and remove the needles as you go.
Insert needle through the center hole and pull tight on the inside of the hat.
Tie off and weave in all ends.
Steam or wet block your hat to relax the yarn.
Hat will st retch a bit in length making it just a little slouchy.
Sew 2 or 3 buttons from the snowman face onto the ribbing as decoration on the hat.
This is optional.
*Another cute option would be to sew all of the snowman face buttons onto your hat in the face shape to make the hat look like a snowman head. This would be darling for a kids hat!

    My absolute favorite Christmas movie is an oldie, but goodie. It is White Christmas with Bing Crosby. I love all of the claymation Christmas movies, and there’s a new tv show with only one new episode a year about two elves who are in charge of helping prepare the roofs of houses where Santa will be delivering packages.

    The best Christmas movie ever & my utmost favorte is White Christmas. As one who studied dance and performed for many years as a youth, I am so moved by Danny Kaye, Roemary Clooney, Bing Crosby, & Ver-Ellen in all the choreography and songs. Wish they still did it like that today. Song: Oh Holy Night.

    As for my favorite song, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. I had to sing it in my kindergarden christmas pageant and it always brings a smile to my face (we had to wear a circle of red carton stuck to our noses with scotch tape!) I’m in my fifties now and the memory of it is still strong LOL

    The older movies are the best.Every year my aunt&I have girls night.We started Thanksgiving night watching”,Christmas in Connecticut ‘,,Its a wonderful life.”white christmas” “it happened on fifth av” ” Holiday Inn”& Miracle on 34th Street etc.We’ll do that until we watch them all.Adding new ones every year.We love it.As far as favorite song.We have a radio station that plays Christmas music 24 hours a day and it stays on that station every year. it’s hard to choose because I love them all.
