On the third day of our 12 Days of Christmas Giveaway, my true love gave to me, a Holiday Penguin Afghan from Lion Brand.
Today’s Project: Holiday Penguin Afghan
Materials:
- Hometown USA Yarn: New York White 4 balls Note: (A)
- Hometown USA Yarn: Oakland Black 2 balls Note: (B)
- Hometown USA Yarn: Cincinnati Red 1 ball Note: (C)
- Hometown USA Yarn: Pittsburgh Yellow 1 ball Note: (D)
- Fun Fur Yarn: White 1 ball Note: (E)
- Lion Brand Crochet Hook – Size P-15 (10 mm)
- Lion Brand Large-Eye Blunt Needles (Set of 6)
Gauge:
6 dc + 4 rows = about 4 in. (10 cm).
When you match the gauge in a pattern, your project will be the size specified in the pattern and the materials specified in the pattern will be sufficient. The needle or hook size called for in the pattern is based on what the designer used, but it is not unusual for gauge to vary from person to person. If it takes you fewer stitches and rows to make your swatch, try using a smaller size hook or needles; if more stitches and rows, try a larger size hook or needles.
NOTES:
1. Afghan is worked in individual pieces, then sewn together.
2. To change color, work last st of old color to last yarn over. Yarn over with new color and draw through all loops on hook to complete st. Proceed with new color. Fasten off old color.

A Happy Hooker” 🙂 .
I love to experiment, to try new fibers whenever I can.
I love yarn, period. All the different textures, the way color is absorbed differently in blends of different fibers, you name it, I love it all. I have become fascinated with bamboo, the way it shines and drapes; but truly every fiber has it’s own special quality that makes it equally loveable!
I like to work with Bouclé yarn
Digicats {at} Sbcglobal {dot} Net
lion brand of course
I love just about all yarns (except the really cheap, scratchy stuff LOL!) Really enjoyed some bamboo yarn I worked with recently … so soft.
As long as the yarn is not scratchy I am ok with it. I think I have a yarn addiction 🙂
Depends on the proyect. For amigurumis I like to use acrylic. But for hats and scarfs I like to use wool the softest the better. That’s for crochet. For knitting I not familiar yet…I have used a soft yarn, and sometimes it slips all the time….
I love the “I Love” yarn — it is so soft and flows through your fingers!
It really depends on the pattern or the item that I am working with. I tend to go to Canon or Benet yarns first, but I check out the yarn that is suggested in the pattern.
I like working with fingering weight yarn.
I like the homespun line…soft and aquishy
Anything I can get my hands on :o)
Depends on the project……..but I love it all
Mainly worsted weight. I love to buy from the knit picks company
I will work with any yarn I can find, but I prefer the softest available, and of course, so far, of the LionBrand yarn, my favorite is the Homespun. I have made scarves and an afghan with the variegated yarns, which are so far the only ones I like. They are just so beautiful to work with, and you never know how the colors will unfold in your project until it is finished…
I enjoy working with all types of yarn, I can’t choose just one!
I love Vanna’s Glamour for smaller, dressy items…Vanna’s Choice for throws and shawls…Kitchen Cotton for (obviously) kitchen items and Cotton Ease for comfy tops and home decor. Michael’s exclusive “Woolspun” makes great soft chunky cowls. Oh…I forgot to say…Lion Brand is my favorite, of course! 😉
Lion Brand Fisherman’s Wool Yarn!
I love any yarn I can get my hands on, but my favorite is bamboo yarn!
all kinds – what ever is around
I tend to like alpaca and I like the DK or the sport weight best.

I love the soft varieties, but any yarn is wonderful!
I’m dazzled by yarn in general!

Yarn! All yarn! Love yarn!
I like the fun yarns.
I love most any yarn with a few exceptions. I don’t like fun fur or extremely lumpy bumpy yarn, but anything else is good.
I enjoy working with Wool Ease Thick & Quick. It’s soft, doesn’t split and works up quickly (no pun intended)..
What do you make with Thick & Quick? I need patterns because I have a bunch of this yarn and keep trying and tearing out sweaters, etc. because they are too heavy. I like the feel of the skein but not how bulky it knit and crochets with the patterns I have tried so far. Thanks.
I like it all, but usually use acrylic yarn
My favorite yarns to work with are the softer yarns. Just love the feel of them. However for the footwear that I have been working on recently, worsted weight works best.

I use all different kinds of yarn. The one I like the most is the one I am using for the project I am doing at the time. I choose my yarn according to what results I want. No matter what I am doing I love the yarn.
Favorite type of yarn is Superwash merino wool. I love its softness and non-scratchiness. Needs some nylon added in fingering weight, but on heavier yarns, just give me pure merino!
Depends on project, but I love Knit One Crochet Too Cotton Ty-Dy
Basically I love all yarn, but work mostly with Red Heart, Vanna’s yarn, and Heartland. More specifically I love a yarn that is on sale and what is good for my projects.
I can’t say that I have a favorite, really. I’ve been sampling lots of different yarns over the past few years. I seem to wander back from fun fur, boucle, bulky, and super bulky bakc to worsted most often. I think I really enjoy self striping yarn the most, though. It’s just fun to see the pattern form.
I like soft worsted weight yarns the best
I like to experiment with all kinds of yarn. I usually wind up with the worsted.
Wow… it totally depends on the project. I have favorite yarns for certain projects. For instance, anything that goes in the kitchen is always cotton yarn. For apparel I prefer Caron Simply Soft. For amigurumi, graphghans or yarn-eater projects I’ll go with Red Heart or I Love This Yarn for the cost factor.
I’ve had to behave myself this time of year and not buy anything for a while; hoping Santa sees I’ve been a good girl. 😉
I knit & crochet so it depends on which I’m doing . . . for knitting, I like Homespun (makes the coziest blankets) . . . for crocheting, a good, non-splitting worsted weight for Amigurumis 🙂
I love all of the yarns. Depending on the.
Project the wool ease thick and quick is terrific!
I like to experiment and try different kinds of yarn, found I like lion brand homespun yarn.
I like the worsted weight best and I like to put different colors together, sometimes I like a variegated and would like to try the self striping when I buy the next time. I just like to knit and use the yarns that are called for in the pattern.
I like using all types of yarns but I think I seem to use the worsted weight most.
I like any yarn that is soft and rich in color.
Love any yarn and especially when I get to try a new pattern!!!
I like working with any silky yarn weighted 3, it’s slightly smaller than average, which keeps things sleek, and it’s soft and enjoyable to work with!
I like baby weight yarn.
I like to work with alpaca yarn.
would depend on what your making, but any really
I think the Heartland yarns are probably my favorite. I just love the color blends, they’re so rich.

I guess I use Heartland the most. I have lately been playing around with some fuzzy or sparkly specialty yarns.
I like soft Red Heart yarn Caron Simply Soft yarn!
My favorites are Caron Simply Soft yarn and super soft chunky yarns.
Love most any yarns, but my all time favorite is alpaca!
Lion Brand chunky!
I’m a fan of making kitchen and bath crochet projects with sugar n cream 100% cotton yarn, but like most crochet and knitters, I will work with just about anything!
I love sock weight yarns of all sorts!
I like working with bulky wool yarns
I love all types, but lately favor lightweight types to make lacy, airy shrugs.
My favorite yarn is Lamb’s Pride from Brown Sheep Yarn Company.
I don’t have a particular brand as a favorite. But my favorite would would soft yarns that’s don’t fray and that are that are full of color. I love natural yarns i guess not acrylic!
I just recently started to crochet and I would have to say wool yarns are my favorite so far.
I always like to try something new & different
I Love to knit and crochet and my favorites are bulky wool, cotton and alpaca! Love my new hobby!!! Thanks!
A lovely buttery yellow yarn is my favorite. It makes me happy.
I love a good strong cotton for clothing, I use worsted polyester for my plastic canvas, and alpaca and lambs wool are graet as well.
One can never have too much yarn!
I love these yarns and patterns.
I like a variety.
Depends on the project! Soft yarns are the best.
I’m enjoying projects with bulky yarn now. So soft and warm.
Buying a lot of LION BRAND YARN!
I am a cotton yarn addict. Can not pass cotton yarn on sale. Love the colors. My crocheted afghans are state fair winners. I have won Best of Show and multiple blue and red ribbons. Can’t go a day without crocheting!
I am really liking the new Heartland wool
Caron’s Simply Soft is my absolute favorite, but for multiple uses, Lion Brand Kitchen Cotton is fun and easy to work with.
I love all kinds of yarn. Baby, bulky, worsted, sugar n’ cream,
I love all yarn…I guess I am addicted…
Working with varieties of yarn is so much fun! I like soft baby yarns, Caron Simply Soft in deep rich colors, Loops and Threads Impeccable, Red Heart Soft, Drops, and Pound of Love.
I love it all! Even the super fine thread to make doilies. I really never met a yarn I didn’t like 🙂
Anything I can give my mom to make me something !
I have never used these yarns or items before, sure would like to add them to my crafts to use. I am trying to get lots of Christmas gifts done, such a hurry. Merry Chirstmas and God Bless
fingering is my favorite, but I enjoy any weight that fits the pattern i’m going to work up.
It varies by project; why I “like” isn’t always the best choicefor achieving the look I want. I usually use wool or cotton accented with silk or an acrylic novelty.
any kind depending on the project…. i use a lot of sugar n’ cream
any size of cotton yarn, I crochet washcloths, shawls, and scarves. I weave placemats and rugs. So I can find a use for any size or color.
Love it… Thanks for the pattern
I love working with soft baby yarn.
imy favourite yarn to work with is loops & threads charisma and loops and threads country loom
I like a variety of yarn!
My all time favorite type of yarn to work with is bamboo silk. But I live all different types really
depends on what I’m making
cotton, wool, baby yarn, thick yarn.
YES! I love it all!
Yarn, I love yarn! I had a nice collection going before I moved to Palau for mission work. I love all the different colors & how i can match them with multi color ones. I have worked the most with Red Heart but it really depends on the project for what is needed.
I’m just starting to learn so I’m using some of my sisters yarn, don’t know what brand. I did buy some blue Red Heart yarn today.
Alpaca is one of my favorites!
I like good old acryllic because it is so easy to work with and holds up well/
I love any type as long as it’s soft and fuzzy!!
PLYMOUTH’S ENCORE yarn: the perfect blend of natural and synthetic fibers plus a very good price for this quality and amount in each skein.
I love worsted weight yarns, and since most of my family is sensitive to any type of wool, I have to use anything other than wool. So far Lion Brand Wool-ease with 20% wool is working for me.
I am just starting to learn to crochet and knit. So far I like Lion Brand and their worsted yarns. It does depend on the project but I check the Lion brand yarns first;)
My Sister and I love to knit for children with cancer . We also knit hats for Moffet Cancer Center and this will be used for making hats for them.We like to use Caron’ s simple soft and any very soft yarns, that washes up good and keeps it shape.
All yarn!
I love lace yarn! The fabric it creates is as light as a feather!
I don’t have a favorite type of yarn; I use various types depending on the project
I am going to guess there was a typo in the rules and you can enter until 11:59pm Dec. 7 based on 1) the fact that otherwise you wouldn’t even be allowed to enter the day this giveaway was posted and 2) previous rules allowed for entries until 11:59pm the next evening.
I love to work with all yarns, and my favorite varies by type of project. The only yarn I don’t like to work with is mohair type yarns that snag if you try to frog it.
Well I love most yarns, alpaca yarn is a favorite.
Any worsted or fingerling weight in a pretty color
I’m loving the chunky wool ease for hats and scarves! So soft and works up so quickly!
Wool because you can hide mistakes with a good blocking
I love baby yarn… always so soft and doesn’t give me a rash!
I love working with the cotton yarns the best! The softer acrylics too but I always come back to cotton! I like cotton being next to my grandchildren’s skin and I love cotton dishcloths. I just noticed the Martha Stewart cotton hemp and want to try something with it. I guess my favorite would be the 1 pound cone since I can make several projects from the same cone or a big project like a baby blanket without running out or having to weave in ends.
Knitpicks Chroma worsted!
Depends on mood and project currently working on Santa hats and bow ties for shelter pets will be making tiny stockings and filling them for them as well 🙂
I love all yarn, but my current obsession is Lion Brand’s Tweed Stripes!!!
I love using all types of yarn , baby yarn, soft chunky yarns, etc …
It all depends on the projects I am going to make.
I love using all types of yarn for all types of projects. I usually have two or three projects going at a time. Just love yarn and the time to reflect on life while making something!!!
My favorite yarn is Wool-Ease Thick and Quick…
Worsted or Aran weight soft merino wool.
Aran or Worsted weight soft merino wool
I love crocheting with Lion Brands Heartland yarn. I love the beautiful melange of colors and it feels soft to work with.
Any Lion Brand, but hand-spun Alpaca is wonderful.
I love trying all sorts of different yarns – I like to keep my projects new and exciting! I do love a nice big chunky yarn for a quick knit project!
I have MS and am not able to go out in the winter, so I stay at home and crochet. I love all yarn and make gifts for my friends, charity, family, anyone who needs something warm. This would sure help me out, since I live on Social Security. But no matter, I will continue making my afghans, scarves, socks, mittens and hats even if I have to go without food to keep in yarn to do it. Lion Brand yarn or die, that’s just life to me.
I love baby yarn. I make blankets for the babies in NICU.
I love any type of wool – I just adore the feel of wool and knitting and crochet relaxes me when I need to unwind..
A lot of favorite yarns! Lion “Homespun” for prayer shawls, and “Wool-ease”, Caron ” Simply Soft”, Red Heart “With Love”, Willow “Daily” … I’m 70, crocheting 60+ years, knitting 40+ years, high partial legally blind 11 years. I play with yarn almost every day!
I am a sucker for worsted silks, alpacas, yak, etc. I love working with really soft baby yarns, too. I prefer multicolored colorways, if I can find them!
I’m not too picky about what yarn I use – but I do tend to pick the thinner yarns because I like really fine work.
I just love lace and really like alpaca and silk blend!
Bamboo yarn is my favorite.
I love yarns with some exotic content, but mostly I use acrylic for gifts so it’s bombproof for washing.
I like yarns with mostly cotton and linen content, thanks!
Plain cotton yarn.
I love many types of yarns but they have to be natural fibers and bright wonderful colors. I don’t like the feel of acrylic yarn.
Baby weight yarn is my favorite, but I like anything except real wool. I’m very allergic and can’t even touch it without a reaction. I’ve tried crocheting with nitrile gloves but it’s too awkward, so I’ve given up on using real wool.
I love all yarns. I don’t really have a favorite, just enjoy working with many different types.
Bulky yarn is my favorite.
About the only yarn i’ve ever used is red heart so far:)
Wool yarn and wool/silk yarn.
Depends on the project. I’m fond of Deborah Norvel chuncky for slippers & hats (saves me the frustration of using 2 skeins to get the same wear & warmth) I have a stash of LB Homespun for prayer shawls. And a stash of baby yarns for babies! I like Marble yarn for the color ways. And Amazing yarn for cowls – the colorways are nice for those.
I mostly make afghans and I find that a good worsted weight yarn works best for me.
I love all types of yarn, but I find that worsted weight, Caron Simply Soft, RedHeart With Love and any soft ww yarn are the ones I use the most. I have done a little experimenting with bulky yarn. Everybody loves the bulky hats.
I love working with all types, but if I had to pick a favorite besides my typical worsted weight yarn, the runner-up would definitely be the chunky yarn! I love using two skeins at the same time for my S sized crochet hook, makes big and quick warm projects especially for this Winter weather!
I will admittedly go weak at the knees for a gorgeous merino/alpaca blended wool. I’ve made a number of beautiful socks for bf to shield him from the snow and cold =)
noro kureyon is my absolute fave yarn, the colors are AMAZING and it felts up nicely
I’m accustomed to working with acrylic yarns since they’re a cheaper variety and they don’t shrink like other natural fibers. I’m picky about my yarns though. I like them to be soft from the get go. I can’t stand acrylic yarns that are scratchy and cling to dry skin. I like working with worsted weight or yarn that’s a little bulkier.
I like making different afghans and animals with the different types of yarn available. It is an adventure to see how the different items turn out. The different colors used in each project is what makes each item so enjoyable.
I love all types of yarn. My favorite is the softest, sturdiest yarn I can get ahold of. I love to crochet all kids of projects but I have not been able to make anything I can wear. I would love to crochet a sweater some day.
I like acrylic because it is affordable and soft, but I love trying new styles too.
I really like knitting with soft baby yarn and cotton yarn. They just are easiest for me to use.
I enjoy soft, who rested weight. Very versatile.
That’s worsted.
I Love working with all kinds of yarn, but I think Chunky is my favorite!
I love anything soft & cuddly!
I love using Woolease Thick and Quick!! I love making warm and cozy items and I have found that this is the best yarn to use for those items. I love the colors too!
I love working with all yarn
