On the ninth day of our 12 Days of Christmas Giveaway, my true love gave to me, Bison Down Wrist Warmers from The Buffalo Wool Company.
Today’s Project: Bison Down Wrist Warmers
Design by Inna Voltchkova
Materials:
- Lace yarn 90 -120 yards www.TheBuffaloWoolCo.com
- Needles:
- US size # 1 /2.5mm set of 5 double pointed needles
- Small Stitch holders
- Tapestry needle
- T- pins for traditional blocking (optional)
- CHART AND GRAFT
Gauge: 15 sts and 20 rows =2 inc(5.1 cm) in patt
NOTES
Wrist Warmers knitted in rounds.
The “teeth” of warmers is worked in garter–stitch lace, with the blank squares of the chart representing knit stitches on right–side and wrong–side rows.
Slip edge stitches as if to purl with yarn in front (sl1 pwise wyif).
Instructions:
Using the long-tail cast-on method CO 7 sts over 2 needles.
Remove 1 needle from the CO sts. Work set-up row and Rows 1–89 of Lace Border (lower border) “teeth” following chart, working all WS rows (not shown on chart) as: sl 1 pwise wyf, k to end. K 11 complete “teeth,” ending with Row 89, and place 8 live sts on small holder. Do not cut yarn.
Pick up 7 sts from the base of the 7 CO sts by putting a needle under each loop. Transfer these sts to a small holder; they will be grafted tog with 8 live sts later.
With another needle and starting at the CO edge, pick up 46 sl sts along the straight edge by putting the needle into the front of each loop (shown as red Xs on chart). K across these sts by knitting in the back of each st. This gives the first set-up row a crossed patt.
The second set-up row: divide sts evenly onto 4 needles and join for working in rounds and in the same time decreasing 2 sts by knitting 2 times p2tog (see chart). You have now 44 sts for pattern (11 sts on each needle).
Work a “Large Strawberry” pattern Rows 1–46 of chart. You have 4 “Large Strawberry” around and 5 “Large Strawberry” high (if you wish you can have 7 “Large Strawberry” high). Do not cut yarn.
Lace border (top border)
Using the backward-loop cast-on method, CO 7 sts over 1 needle. Work set-up row and Rows 1–89 of Lace Border (top border), joining the last border st with 1 live st of center section at the end of each RS row; sl this “k2tog” stitch back onto left-hand needle. Work all WS rows (not shown on chart) as k to end without slipping the first st (this st is already on right-hand needle).
Note: Work set of short-row by working the next RS row to 1 st from end, turn (do not k last st tog with body st), work WS row.
Continue to k 1 body st tog with 1 top border st and slipping this st back onto left-hand needle on right-side rows, k 11 complete “teeth,” ending with Row 89.
Finishing
Pick up 7 sts from the base of the 7 CO sts (top border). Graft Lace Border (top border) edges tog; transfer sts from holder onto needles (lower border) and graft them tog. When there are 2 sts left, sl 1 over the other— l st remain. Cut a short piece of yarn and tie a knot through remain st to prevent it from raveling. Weave in loose ends. Block (optional).Steam and dry.

I knit a large baby blanket, then decided to do a ruffle. It ended up to be over 3000 stitches. Just casting off took “forever!” Thanks for the giveaway.
Not sure it’s “crazy,” but I made my son a Master Splinter sweater year ago (before TMNT made their recent comeback). Took a long time, but he loved it.
I suppose the “craziest” thing I ever crocheted was a Yoda Hat for on of my uncles. 🙂
My boys are over 6 feet tall. Regular blankets don’t fit them. I made them each 7′ long and wide blankets.
Nothing crazy but I crochet a drawstring bag with various shell design and I added some beads. I crocheted it for a sterling silver and quartz bead Rosary I made that I was giving as a gift.
I crocheted a similar design to the despicable me outfit, a sleeper
for a girlfriends baby. I think she was the real fan.
I’ve knitted dragon wings and dinosaur scales for stuffed animals to play dress up with.
I can’t think of anything particularly crazy or special but I did crochet my niece a batman hat with ears and a batman bag. I also made her a British flag afghan.
The most special things I’ve crocheted were doll dresses for my mother-in-law who was a doll collector. The most special was a Winter Wonderland dress. It was navy blue with white trim & ruffles, a hooded cape and hand warmer to match and finished off with white pearl beaded snowflakes around the skirt. It was the most beautiful one I ever made!
Really pretty beadwork.
An afghan based on the high and low daily tempetatures
I knit a shawl for a very special and TALL lady. Final measurement from neck to tip was 6 feet!
Craziest thing…a boobie pillow for my son! Special thing…a brain tumor awareness afghan I designed and crocheted for my husband.
The most fabulous thing I’ve crocheted is an afghan from Bernat’s 1974 issue of Americana Afghans, “A Visit to Sturbridge Village.” It had 23 strips of 3 shades of green in 3 different widths. The widest, in the afghan stitch, had embroidered flowers in varying shades of lavender, and leaves in varying shades of green; the next widest strip, also in the afghan stitch had a Greek key-like stitch embroidered on it. The remaining strips were done in a chevron stitch. I gave this to a very special friend as a wedding gift.
The most challenging thing was a vest knitted from a pattern I created from a photo taken of a $300 vest in a store in Michigan. In colors of grey, off-white and burgundy, it features a 25-row diamond pattern across the bottom, a color-block strip half-way up, rows of seed stitch and purls to give it texture, a collar and zipper. I’ve received rave reviews when I’ve worn it!
Hmm, When my Granny taught me to Crochet many years ago the first thing I did was a curly worm. Now that I am teaching myself, I am working on a back scrubber for my son who has Down Syndrome.
I have just finished making a flying spaghetti monster for my father in law for Christmas… Definitely the craziest thing much more so than my death star or Yoda I have made.
I made a minion doll for my 35 year old daughter
I made a doctor doll for my friends daughter in medical school
I made an elf hat and beard for a baby.
The crocheted a Lalaloopsy and Tootie hat for my little girl.
I crocheted a blanket for my youngest son with a blue pond in the center. It had ducks, lily pads, a sail boat on the pond. The banks were green and I crocheted trees with red apples, trees with yellow apples, and flowers on the banks. That young man is in the Marines now. He recently came home for his grandmothers funeral and asked did I still have it. He said, “I’m taking this with me & I don’t care what the guys say”. It’s good to know that we give comfort and love with the things that we create.
When I was 18, I knitted what was supposed to be bed slippers for my Dad. They looked fine on his feet but when they were removed they were long and round. Of course, my Dad had to comment on the shape of them…they looked like a man’s private part.
I have just the person in mind to give this sock making kit to.
i can only do scarfs right now
I made my first sweater for a baby shower. Not a big deal to more experienced knitters but I was very proud of it. And the parents-to-be loved it!
I crocheted a bedspread.
I knitted a floor length skirt…with cables, pleats, 8 stitch patterns, a set in zipper, sewn in 4 inch elastic waist band and it took over 10,000 yards of worsted weight yarn. It was beautiful and I still wear it to holiday functions. But ever time I wear…I get a slight headache remembering the difficulty making it.
I crocheted myself a dress many years ago. It was very nice but not very practical. Probably wore it a couple of times.
There are a few items I knit that have meant a lot. One was a dress for my sister after she was recovering from stage 4 cancer. I knit a dress for her that she wore to her daughter’s baptism. I also knit a prayer shawl for my mother as she recovered from an aortic dissection and then when she had a second dissection less than six months later my father had it around his shoulders the entire time she was in surgery. She has in turn lent it to my sister whose little daughter just underwent surgery last week.
I enjoy knitting/crocheting unusual animals, so I knitted a Lemur. He gets some pretty odd looks from people, too ; )
fingerless gloves for a friend of mine for work
A dinosaur costume for my son. It took ages!
I crocheted a gator scarf.
The craziest thing I ever crocheted was a bottle holder with a shoulder strap… I used acrylic yarn, and probably should have used cotton or something else… I put my water bottle in the carrier and the bottle sank further and further and further… the strap just kept stretching until my bottle was out of reach by my knee. Now I make bottle carriers out of plastic canvas, with D-rings and a sturdy purse strap that does not stretch. Every item I crochet is special to me if I am making it for someone, whether a tiny blanket so a preemie can kangaroo bond with her parents, a scarf for a grandchild, or caps for kids undergoing chemo.
The most special items I crocheted are my grand kids first baby blanket .So they would always be surrounded by my love.
My mother died at age 64. For Christmas several years before I knit her a poncho that I had to make myself do at least 3 rows a day or I would never gotten it finished. It was beautiful and she loved it that I had made it myself.
The craziest thing I ever crocheted…hmmm. so many choices. But I have to choose the time I designed and made my husband a set of Spocktopus amigurumis. Picture Spock (from Star Trek) as an octopus!! LOL. There was a starefleet blue “good” one, and a green goateed green “evil” one. He loved them and wore one on each shoulder throughout DragonCon.
The most unique piece was a beaded and crocheted Christmas ball cover
underpants for the homeless.
The craziest thing that I ever crocheted was a coffee cozy with pieces of yarn sticking out. I has little scraps of yarn and thought that I could put them to use to I tied them individually to the cozy and it turned out so cute!
One time I crocheted a really bad scarf. I don’t have much yarn to do anything else.
I don’t remember….. one time I crocheted an owl… it was really cute!
The most craziest thing I have knit is a panda bear.
The craziest thing I’ve ever knit is a pair of orange and navy underwear for my then fiance. He’d gone to the University of Illinois-Champaign/Urbana and those were their colors!
I am working on a Clint Eastwood style poncho for my husband. Too fun!
The craziest thing I have ever crocheted was a pair of size 17, 5E slippers for my son in law – I was happy to be able to, as he has never been able to buy slippers in a store!
I just started knitting about two months ago. I think the craziest thing I’ve tried so far is a dragon stuffed animal. The spines were a pain! 🙂
Earflap hat for myself………love it so warm
The most special thing I’ve knitted is this daisy granny square. It’s so pretty. c:
The most special thing I ever knitted was probably a wine bottle sweater, because I challenged myself to learn how to knit with dpn’s. I found it very difficult to learn, so when I finally did, the project became like a badge for me, lol.
I learned to crochet so I could make a Lamchop hand puppet for my daughter.
The first item I ever crocheted was a baby blanket for my sister’s first child. 🙂 I had no idea how to substitute yarns and what effect that could have when done wrong. The baby blanket ended up almost as big as a throw!
The most special are the baby blankets for my grandbabies. The strangest was slippers for my first try and they were double the intended size. Guess I have very loose stitches.
The very first baby blanket I knitted for my husband’s cousin. The whole family made me feel really special and from that point on I have knitted over 30 baby blankets for family and friends.I made the blankets with love and the love I received back was hundred times the love.
I crocheted a little doll for my first child. she still remembers it.
I knit about 20 hats for the newborns every year.
Crocheted flowers on a crocheted vine for a yarn bombing.
I think the craziest thing I crocheted was the “booby hats” for newborns. Everyone got a kick out of them.
Special items included an afghan stitch baby blanket for my youngest GD and an “Angel Wings” shawl for my mom.
I knitted a Sorting Hat from the Harry Potter series for a friends’ husband.
My daughter has talked me into making sweaters for penguins. I never knew penguins needed sweaters but apparently they do.
The “craziest” thing I’ve made lately was a My Little Pony character hat. Complete with mane.
I crocheted an alien hat for my best friend with an antenna and pointy ears.
Craziest thing? When I was a kid, I used to crochet things for my cat. Ear muffs, sweaters, berets… Yeah, not sure why, but I did.
The most special things I have crocheted and knitted are matching outfits for my Grand daughter and her doll.
The most special thing I have knit is an afghan for my grandmother when I was a teen.

Most special thing Was I crocheted personalized x-mas stockings for all 4 of my children. I still have mine that my great aunt crochet for me the year I was born. I hope they treasure them as I do mine!
a SMILE !! and a purple heart
A PEACH COLORED BABY DRESS. My niece was very petite and It had a million stitches, I used very small size needles and my sister was saving it for her daughter to grown into. One day I asked her how the dressed looked on her daughter and she said “oh, its tood big, I said I don’t think so.” well my neice out grew it before she could wear it. It did fit the cabbage patch doll. and My niece still has it. Maybe one day her daughter will wear it.
a willy warmer for my grandson in law, he put a photo on fb so I told my granddaughter I can make anything. So I did, he loved it and turned very red when he opened the package.
I made a scarf with lots of beads… before I knew the easy way to add the beads.
In Jr. High, my best friend wanted a Nose Warmer, so I made one for her…The crazy part is, she WORE it all winter!
Hmmm, probably either a turkey for Thanksgiving last year or camouflage Knight hat 🙂
Sox to wear with flip flops’
The craziest things I have ever knitted were three caricature 18 inch dolls for my son. Each doll represented one of his buddies and my son and I had a great time picking out the yarn colors and his buddies’ major characteristics . When finished they were given to the buddies for Christmas. The boys and their mothers loved them and to me the funniest part was at the time my son and his friends were all in their early 20’s!
I crocheted a mustache to wear for a mustache party. I came in second place (competing against real mustaches) for the best mustache!
I knit a lace christening gown with hat for my grandchildren
The craziest thing I’ve ever knitted would have to be the puppy costume I made for my son using the fun fur type yarn – he was black brown and grey complete with floppy ears and a tail!
I just started crocheting again after 25 years but I remembered how to do the basic stitches with no problem. However, one of my first projects was a pretty decorative scarf for my mother. In the final step of weaving in the starter thread on the chain end, I clipped the thread too close and cut a piece of the crocheted scarf. It started unraveling. I was able to stop it and tie it down about 5 rows in. I had to get really creative to fill in the gap and make it look right. I think I did a really good job! No one can tell the difference.
Made a afghan for my grandson that had over 2000 blocks 🙂
i crocheted a dragon
The craziest thing I ever knitted was a lifelike zombie doll for a monster contest. It had intestines spilling out and an arm falling off. My boys loved it!
I tried to knit a scarf that ended up more like a towel.
The craziest thing I ever crocheted or at least it looks silly was my very first afghan because it started out about 4 feet wide as I crocheted loosely, but as I gained experience and confidence I crocheted much tighter. Thus my first afghan had almost a triangular shape. That was 48 years ago and guess what I still have it and smile every time I find it in my closet.
Craziest thing I ever crocheted was an elephant G-string for my husband when he was a male dancer. Many, many, many years ago.
The craziest thing I ever knitted was the only sweater I ever knitted. It was supposed to be a size 12 for me but I ended up giving it to a friend who wore a size 20!
I knit myself a funky hat with points of all different colors sticking out! Whenever I wore it everyone smiled at me. Crazy 70+ woman!

Craziest and most special thing I crochet is the stupid Christmas hat I make for my son every year. And he wears what ever I make every time. Makes my holiday!!!
The most special thing I have ever made – was my first baby sweater with hat and booties. What made it special ? Well, it was for my first born and I felt such joy and love while while I crocheting it. I rocked back and forth in the rocking chair we got for his anticipated arrival as my creation came to life. He wore that set as we brought him home from the hospital and introduced him to family and friends.
I’m crocheting a vest for my daughter. It’s all done in slip stitch crochet and is terribly slow going. It’s the only thing she’s ever asked me to make her though, so that makes it special to me… because she’s special.
Most special crochet scarves I made for all the staff at my dog & cat’s Vet’s office for Christmas. They all loved them > crochet in different colors. ~*~
The craziest is unmentionable! The most special is a rug I crocheted from jute for the back porch of our first house. When we moved I passed it on to my Mom for my parents cabin and it worked great on their porch for many years until she decided to hang it on the clothesline after washing it. The birds loved the jute, picking several sections apart so it was unusable.
I guess the craziest thing was a crocheted bikini a friend of mine requested for her honeymoon in the early 1970s…
Hmm… crazyiest thing I ever crocheted was a shawl made from leftover bits and pieces of super bulky hat yarn. It is a catastrophicaly ugly mishmash of non-complementary colors, but is very warm and snuggly.
I was making a loop stitch pair of slippers for my daughter, and my son came in, he wanted a pair also, he thought they were so cool. So I made him a pair.
I don’t think I’ve ever crocheted anything crazy. I am not that experienced yet, but practice makes perfect, right? I would like to crochet a toy some day.
I would make them for myself. My diabetic neuropathy always makes my feet feel like ice cubes.
I work with adults with special needs, and as a way to build one client’s confidence, I asked her to teach me how to crochet. (I already knew how, but she didn’t know that.) I spent the longest time creating that super long crochet chain! She was so proud of herself for ‘teaching’ me how to crochet!

The craziest thing I ever crocheted is “The Dead Fish Hat” that I made for my grandson in college. The stomach part fits down on the head, with the open mouth and eyes looking forward, and the tail in the back, with fins on the back and sides. I doubted he would wear it on campus, but he did and several friends liked it so much, they each wanted one!!
I bet most people would think that the sweaters and toys I make for my cat is probably crazy, but not to a cat person.
Craziest thing was a ‘male member cozy.’ And yes, I was requested to make it by said male, for himself, not as a gag gift.

For me personally, the most special thing I crocheted was my first thing. I’m left-handed and had almost given up learning. I wanted a granny square anything, but was willing to start with a scarf. After way too many frustrating hours and countless tries–I got. That moment when it just became clear and all the photos and directions I had to flip in my head just jelled. When I finally pieced it together, I wore it like peacock plumes. With pride.
The most special things I crochet are items that I crochet for my family and friends. I enjoy seeing their faces when they open their gifts.
A bigger than king-sized crochet afghan with a quilt pattern in granny squares and half squares.
I crocheted Barbie clothes when I was young.
I crocheted a college blanket for my daughter. I’m still crocheting that darn blanket 5 years after she graduated…still working the cross stitch design of the mascot. This is worse than Penelope working her design and pulling it out while waiting for Odysseus to return from conquering Troy in the Odyssey.
Blankets for my kids…my oldest was after she was born and i made my sons before he was born….they both love them to this day
My unruffled scarf

The craziest thing I ever crocheted was nose warmers for me and my friends in school that had pom poms on the tip. Wow, that was back in the 70’s.
The most special thing I have knit was unplanned. I started knitting a shawl with no particular purpose. It turned into a prayer shawl for a good friend who lost hrr husband.

I also made the patterns for these items. There are others, but I think these are my favorites.
A Christmas stocking
I tried to crochet a handbag one time.It never did turn out the strap messed me up.I used earth tone colors and it looked nice, except it was more like a pouch.
what was suppose to be a winter hat for a baby turned out horribly.it didn’t even look like a hat
I. Started a baby sweater for my son several years ago. The pattern was an Irish design with cables and popcorn, moss stitch ,etc. it took me two and a half years to finish but it was worth the time when it was done! It has been the best project I ever completed.

The most special things I will ever crochet will be for my great grand baby that is due in May.
My 1st knitted shawlette, the Shetland Shorty, wasn’t crazy in itself, but just about drove me crazy until I learned the true value of markers to divide each pattern repeat, and voila! sanity was restored and I finished the shawlette! Thanks for the contest opportunity.
My most memorable thing I ever crochet is a multi-colored poncho. My first big project.
The craziest thing I ever knit was an Afghan for my friend Rosie. I started it before her birthday one year and finished it for her a year later..was beautiful. Was the only full size Afghan I ever knit.. she loves it. I guess persistence paid off.
