Beyond Beginner Crochet: Stitches Midwest

August 13, 2013 by AllFreeCrochetAfghanPatterns 2 Comments

This year at Stitches Midwest I took a class from the one and only Crochet Dude! This class was geared for those who have picked up a crochet hook and knew the basic stitches. Being as busy as I am, this class was perfect for me to help me get motivated to crochet more and more. By taking this class I definitely gained confidence in my crocheting abilities and now I can’t wait for a break to just relax and crochet.

The Crochet Dude, Drew Emborsky, actually has his own line of hooks, yarn, and crochet books. He’s a crochet celebrity and even one of the class members next to me gasped, “it’s really him!” What I loved about this class was how excited everyone was to be there. Everyone seemed eager to learn and share their frustrations with crochet. Drew was right there to provide answers and tips and tricks for all of our crochet woes. Meanwhile, we all were instructed to work on our single crochet, double crochet, and half double crochet.

The most important thing we all quickly discovered was to remember to count, count, count! Otherwise, you’ll end up with anything but straight edges.

Then we learned how to change colors in two different ways which was a lot of fun to do. Once you learn this technique, color-changing in patterns will be easy peasy. Here are some photos of my swatch:

I used to shy away from changing colors because I always seemed to do something wrong. Now I can look at any crochet pattern and say “Hey, I bet I can do that!”

Many thanks to The Crochet Dude for an awesome class!

Which is harder for you: changing colors or counting stitches?

It is harder for me to change colors when the old color is still attached and you have to carry it along until you are ready to use the old color again. I do not have a problem when you cut off the starting color and switch to another one.
