Wrapped in Gems: Birthstone Crochet Patterns

July 26, 2014 by AllFreeCrochet 25 Comments

I thought birthstones were an invention of jewelry stores, until I started reading about them. I was surprised to learn that the tradition of birthstones dates back to the first century! The time when people started wearing birthstones is debated.

However, modern birthstones have been influenced by jewelers. In 1870, Tiffany & Co. released a set of poems that prescribed birthstones as cures for various personality issues. April ladies can tell their partners that their tears can be cured with diamonds, for example.

We know the real secret though — anything can be cured with crochet! Yarn is much cheaper, too. Just for fun, I’ve matched a crochet scarf, cowl, or shawl pattern to each birthstone. These free crochet patterns are real gems!

I prefer the old April stone: Diamond, clear or white. I know that there are now many colored diamonds but clear has always been my choice, however I would take white yarn.

I liked a couple of the ones that I could actually see but, not the March one that is for my birthday. I wish I could have seen them for all the months.

Fran, if you click on the name of the item under the month where there is no photo, the link will take you to the page with a picture. For instance, if you click on 50 Minute Easy Crocheted Scarf under February, you’ll arrive at a page with the scarf shown.

I follow the old school which states my October birthstone is Opal, not Rose Zircon. Yes, I like the pattern chosen for October, but no, I’ve never been fond of pink in any shade, so will not be making that pattern in the chosen colors. I favor blues and greens over the red family of colors any day, and tend to like pale colors better than most bright ones.

I, too, wish there were photos for every month on this page so I could see the other patterns without having to click through the links as I did for October.

While I don’t dislike pink, I have to agree that OPAL is the proper and rightful birthstone for the month of October. Rose Zircon is an artificial stone that has been used because Opal gems are much more expensive, but it is NOT the true birthstone for October. I will never wear anything but Opals since that is my true birthstone. I wouldn’t be caught dead wearing an artificial stone. Wish the project for October were in some OPALESCENT shade…. as that is what I would want to make to represent the month of October.

I like January, September and November. Couldn’t see my moth December. Didn’t like July, March and May. I think it is such a cool idea. Any reason why you don’t display them all? Thanks for sharing.

What a great idea for presents for all the women in our life! I think I need to get busy on some Christmas presents!

And im a June baby, I think I would make it in a pearl white colored yarn, as yarn cant possible show the true beauty of the alexandrite’s chaning color! I love this list!

Opal is the stone for October so you really do not have one for my birth stone. I would crochet the pattern for a younger person than myself.

I clicked on December, & then on the name-nothing came up. Same with October. I tried other months, was able to pull up the scarf, but couldn’t bring up the pattern.

I really would have liked to see the 1/2 skein crochet cowl for December but the link does not work and so I could not see the one for my birth month. How disappointing! Not usual for your site and SO disappointing! most of the other months were very pretty and looked interesting but to not be able to see December ruined the whole thing for me.
