Today’s Pattern: Twisted Taffy Throw and Pillow
Fall’s officially here and winter’s knocking on our doorstep, which means it’s time to break out the cable patterns. The texture and overall appearance of the cable stitch make these patterns absolute classics. And the Twisted Taffy Throw and Pillow pattern is no exception! This knit blanket pattern uses a few special stitches to create a throw and pillow full of texture. You’ll definitely be snug-as-a-bug all winter long when cuddling up with this beautiful pattern.
Skill Level: Intermediate
Materials:
- Red Heart Soft 20 balls 4601 Off White Or Red Heart Super Soft: 10 balls 4601 Off White
- Susan Bates Circular Knitting Needles: 13mm [US 17] circular knitting needle 36” (90 cm) long. Note: straights or a shorter circular can be used for pillow.
- Stitch markers, large cable needle, 18 x 18” (45.5 x 45.5 cm) pillow form, yarn needle
Gauge: 10 sts = 4” (10 cm); 12 rows = 4” (10 cm) in pattern with 3 strands of yarn held together. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size needle to obtain the gauge.
Throw measures 45 x 56” (114.5 x 142 cm)
Pillow measures 18 x 18” (45.5 x 45.5 cm
Special Stitches:
- 3/3 LC (3 over 3 Left Cross) = Slip next 3 sts to cable needle and hold in front, k3, then k3 from cable needle.
- 3/3 RC (3 over 3 Right Cross) = Slip next 3 sts to cable needle and hold in back, k3, then k3 from cable needle.
- 4/4 LC (4 over 4 Left Cross) = Slip next 4 sts to cable needle and hold in front, k4, then k4 from cable needle.
- 4/4 RC (4 over 4 Right Cross) = Slip next 4 sts to cable needle and hold in back, k4, then k4 from cable needle.
Pattern Stitches:
- Left Cable (over 8 sts) Rows 1–8: Beginning with a right side row (knit), work in Stockinette st (knit on right side, purl on wrong side) for 8 rows. Row 9 (right side – cable row): 4/4 LC. Rows 10–16: Work in Stockinette st for 7 rows. Repeat Rows 1–16 for Left Cable pattern.
- Horseshoe Cable (over 12 sts) Rows 1–4: Beginning with a right side row, work in Stockinette st for 4 rows. Row 5 (right side – cable row): 3/3 RC, 3/3 LC Rows 6–10: Work in Stockinette st for 5 rows. Repeat Rows 1–10 for Horseshoe Cable pattern.
- Right Cable (over 8 sts) Rows 1–8: Beginning with a right side row, work in Stockinette st for 8 rows. Row 9 (right side – cable row): 4/4 RC. Rows 10–16: Work in Stockinette st for 7 rows. Repeat Rows 1–16 for Right Cable pattern.
Notes:
- Throw and pillow are worked holding 3 strands of yarn together throughout. Designer recommends rolling 3 strands into a single ball before beginning so that yarn does not tangle as easily.
- Sixteen balls of Soft yarn are needed to make the throw only. Four balls of Soft yarn are needed to make the pillow only.
- Work back and forth on circular needle as if working with straight needles.
- Cable patterns can be worked by following written instructions or reading charts. Read right side rows of charts from right to left and wrong side rows from left to right.
- Stitch markers are placed on both sides of each cable pattern. Slip markers when you come to them. Count the stitches between the markers from time to time to ensure that you still have the correct number.

But the one thing I really enjoyed was a tiny weeny amigurumi elephant for my daughter house/car key chain. It came out incredible, people even doubted that I did it, they though it was store bought.
I crocheted a Kippah, a jewish head covering for my dog. The kids wanted one. All for the love of your kids. Lol
My biggest project was a pineapple stitch tablecloth that I crocheted for my mother. It took me a year but was gorgeous when finished.Well worth the time spent.
I crocheted a beautiful white afghan. A friend of mine purchased the kit but did not know how to crochet well so she asked me to work out the pattern and teach her. I worked out the pattern, taught her. I made an afghan according to the pattern; however, she never did.
I have also made animals-elephant, monkey, bear, and dog. Great for scraps!
Not too unusual, but I am making some dinosaur hats for newborns.

Of.
Proud Marine Mom
My first afghan.
My most unique piece was a crochet backpack that had removable back straps. The backpack could then be converted to a large bohemian bag.
I crocheted a detailed afghan for some friends using Frosty Green Red Heart Super Saver. i crocheted a lapgan using Honeydew Red Heart Super Saver and did a free raffle drawing for my coworkers and one of my friends name was drawn. No one wants to buy what I make so I end up just giving it away. Love making things and learning new stitches. I also knit and the first afghan I ever knitted I entered in the fair at a young age and it won 1st place.
I believe it would have to be the afghan I did that consisted of each and every stitch there is in crochet. Each block had a different stitch and it was very very challenging. Loved making it.
I knitted a dress and sweater to match
Nothing terribly unique but I did crochet granny square vests when it was the thing in the 1970’s as a teenager.
Ponchos fo r grand daughters
I crochet everything from blankets to toys, things for kitchen such as towel toppers and bag holders, and doll dresses for air fresheners. I am in the process of teaching myself how to knit.
A spiderweb set Hat scarf and earrings 🙂
A couple of years ago, I crocheted a coat for my mom. It has a little weight, but she claims it is very warm.
Wow, crocheting a coat is something I have never heard of. would like to see a picture of the finished product.
I have crocheted blankets to cover the bodies of my deceased patients.
I crocheted a flower pot with flowers
A rug that looked like a spider web.
I would have to say the most unique item that was crocheted was, a blue eye for a swap. The swap was called the “evil eye swap”, the eye was crocheted flat and framed for my partner.
Then for the knitted item, it would have to be the cabled throw I just completed, during a KAL, with Edie Eckman, and the Creative bug web site. If you like cables you should check this out, she used Lion brand yarns.
Correction to this post, it was Red Heart yarns used!
Correction to my post, it was Red Heart Yarns used!
Well I would not technically call it unique because I am still just a beginner. I am currently working on a Breast cancer awareness headbands and arm bands for our High School band to wear at our pink out football game. So im excited and honored to be able to do this
I am making a christmas tree skirt, my first project with cables! It will be huge and beautiful!!
It is a current work in progress….a graphgan
I am working on a “Animal” hat for my brother in law. I also made a crochet bouquet for my sister this past summer.
I have crocheted a lion. He was my most unique and first Amigurumi item.
I have only been crocheting for a year, so I’m not to interesting. I made a fat little turkey for my mom. Tried making one for myself and it ended up a skinny turkey. Don’t know what happened but they need up completely different from each other. Haha I guess that would be the most interesting thing I’ve done so far!
I crocheted a “doctor” doll for a friend’s daughter
I made a minion doll for my daughter
I have been crocheting for awhile now and have made some pretty interesting items. Some of the more interesting and unique items include a zombie hat for my husband, a hotdog sweater for my dog, elf slippers for my friends, 2 different Transformers hats for a friends children, a leprechaun hat with an attached beard and a saddle with cup holders for my dog. I love the challenge of finding something new to make using a new stitch to teach myself.
Probably the flying doily Frisbee … I was intrigued by the name and the concept of a doily flying like a frisbee….. I have made 8 or 9 to date and I am still amazed how well they fly… and they are perfect for indoor play and play with very small children and dogs because it is soft and does not hurt when it hits them…. I usually take one every time I take my kids to the park and most times we leave without because some kid took a liking to it and we let them take it home!! Just gives me an excuse to make another lol!!
That sounds interesting.
I am new to crochet so haven’t done too many things but have done two baskets which to me are a unique thing to crochet….just love my new hobby!
I crocheted a sweater coat with fun fur & 2 other yarns with no pattern. Took awhile to get the shoulder size correct. Lol
I made a round afghan to fit a queen size bed for a college student. Never again. Also in one month I made twelve beanies, various sizes and eight hat and scarf sets for family.
My very first crochet project was an afghan, white, pink and green. It had pink flowers that popped out of the center of granny squares. I used Red Heart yarn since it was the best looking and I made the afghan for my Mom. I no longer have the pattern, but wish I did. i found it in the back of an old magazine.
The most unusual item I crocheted was a Turtle Trivet, crocheted over bottle caps then sewn together. I gave them out for Christmas presents, circa 1977. Every once in a while, I come across that pattern in my stash. I have improved my crafting to make prettier things as gifts. My family still loves all my handmade gifts no matter what it is.
Most unique thing I have knitted is recently started making hats for babies and toddlers. So far I have made a pumpkin, apple, and minnie mouse hat. I even had to crochet to make a vine for my pumpkin hat. Next moving on to Christmas hats.
I’m working on a crochet Olaf snowman for my granddaughter
Just finished a Doctor Who scarf! Maybe not so unique but certainly distinctive. And, as a new knitter, all those stripes were quite a challenge.
I have made my animal hats I have also made clowns and cupie dolls
I crocheted over a dozen sock monkey cup cozies for a friend to give as gifts at her granddaughter’s wedding.
I knitted a onesie for my daughter while I was pregnant with her. I am also in the process of knitting a yarn-stash afghan that uses squares made of four strands of yarn…and a different four strands in each square. Should look really interesting!
I crocheted a giant squid, he is orange and with his tentacles he is over 4 feet tall.
Hi red heart, i have been knitting with RH since i was 8 years old moom got at woolworths, now i,m dating myself lol. any way i.m now disabled and knitting and chrocheting is my fav hobby, i just finished a king sized crocadile st afchan sorry for the spelling the meds make me a bit fuzzy in the morning this giveaway looks awesome, keeping fingers crossedjuhgs Karen
It probably isn’t unique but I knitted Barbie clothes for my nieces.
The most unique item I have ever crocheted to date would be a Yip Yip Alien from Sesame Street. A friend of mine posted a link to the pattern she found on Pintrest to her Facebook and ask if any of her crafty friends could make her one. I gave it a try and it turned out a lot better than I thought it would.
Maybe not unique to some….but I designed and knitted up some fish……
http://lifeofaknitphomaniac.blogspot.com/2012/07/hi-everyone.html
Since I only started knitting a few months ago, I’m still on my first project ever, a ten-stitch blanket. Ours a lot of fun, though!
The most unique project I ever knitted is a temperature/ weather afghan. I knitted 2 rows a day for the high temperatures and 2 rows for the low temperatures for an entire entire year. I used a different color for every 5 degrees.
What a neat concept.
This should win. Can we see a picture? I just love this idea.
The most Unique thing I have knitted would have to be a Chemo Cap specifically for a woman I work with who was going through Breast Cancer treatment. I felt that that was least thing I could do for her as she was going through this testing time in her life……the best thing about it was I did not tell her that I made it and found out she loved it and she did wear it to work often.
I have crocheted a ghost holding the word BOO and a black spider.
Hmmm I guess unusual is in the eye of the beholder! Nowadays there really isn’t anything unusual! I guess a long time ago I knitted my sister a slipper sock…. went to her knees and was laced up all the way w/ tassels at the end of the laces!
I crocheted a six string guitar for my one year old nephew and he LOVED it. It was sort of taxing sometimes but the end product made it all worth it. It was so cute 🙂
I did a Sully hat hat from Monsters Inc. and I did my own ‘dinosaur’ hat for my nephew!
I am a newer crocheter. I have made a couple of unique items. I made a small fishing bobber and Cat butt coasters. those would be my most unique items.
Two years ago when our daughter and her fiance were planning their wedding, Justin, my now son-in-law asked me to knit kilt hose. He was wearing a kilt and wanted to wear kilt hose and not bought ones. He asked me at Easter and they got married the end of June. I must say the hose turned out beautifully, but I was knitting every spare minute as the pattern was quite intricate and I was using size 0 needles. I was so proud of that project!
The most unique thing I made was 200+ crochet flowers. I used all my scraps to make different colors. I attached a pin and used the flowers for SWAPs at Day camp. The girls at camp still talk about the flowers they have on their camp hats.
I crocheted an afghan with raised red roses on a white background which took quite sometime to finish as I was very young and inexperienced but still I finished it.
My sister was recovering from stage 4 cancer. She found out that she and her husband were approved for adoption. The dress that my sister wore at the baptism of her daughter (my niece) was what I knit for her. I also knit the sweater that she put on her daughter when it got chilly later on. I had only been knitting for about a year when this took place. I also knit this same sister a sweater full of cables that was named the same as my sister –same spelling.
Back in the sixties I knitted a “Beatle” doll for a charity sale. It was hugely popular. I also knitted a “Topsy Turvey” doll which was a doll with pink skin, blond braided hair & blue dress which when inverted turned into a doll with dark skin, black curly hair & pink striped dress.I knitted it for my baby niece who is now 21 & I believe she still has the doll.
I crochet a big elephant pillow for my children. I recently found it packed away in my camping stuff. It was a nice surprise. (I am now a grandma)
I think the most unique thing I’ve ever crocheted was the Skyrim Helmet that I did free hand for my boyfriend.
The most unique project I have ever done was a sweater I knitted for my mother. This was the first thing that I ever even made. I didn’t know it at the time but it quickly became my mother’s favourite sweater. It was the only item of clothing that would keep her warm after she was diagnosed with cancer. I am so glad that the sweater was the first thing I ever knitted.
So far my most unique crochet item is my giraffes that I made for a learning experience with The Crochet Crowd! I didn’t think I would ever be able to crochet Amigurumi items as I am a late comer to the yarn world! Taught myself to crochet 4 and a half years ago, but hadn’t expanded much from afghans and hats up to that point! Now to teach myself to knit! 🙂
I needed a dice bag to bring to a gaming convention in Indy this summer, and the pattern I liked best looked like a giant eyeball. I didn’t quite have “giant eyeball” colors in my stash, though, so my dice bag looks like either a giant space-alien eyeball or a very detailed pumpkin . . . depending on which end one looks at!
The most unique project for me…….has been a teddy bear hat, along with ears. I did this for my youngest daughter when she was in 3rd grade and she still has it to this day (she’s now 12)
The most unique project I made was a Pinkie Pie hat and scarf for my daughter’s best friend in honor of her 16th birthday! She loves My Little Pony and Pinkie Pie is her favorite. I looked at lots of pictures from many angles to get it just right and combined embroidery with the crochet. The scarf even had “hoof” pockets on the ends!
Well, I used a pattern so it wasn’t wholly unique, but I crocheted huge Winnie the Pooh and Tigger stuffed animals. Never again something so involved… it was a challenge because it was NOT Amigurumi with limbs etc attached to the main body… nearly every piece was crocheted onto the main body, and it got very awkward with this huge Tigger in my lap, as I counted carefully so the tiger stripes would come out correctly!! The fun part was crocheting Pooh’s red tee shirt!
My favorite unusual project was the stocking cap with an extremely long, very slowly tapering end, so it is both a cap and a scarf for my adult daughter, with a pouf made of a crocheted squiggle instead of a traditional pompom (I worry about pompoms coming loose in the laundry). The scarf-cap was all one soft green, but for an interesting texture and eye-appeal, the stitch pattern alternated every few rows. She gets claustrophobic in regular scarves, so she loves this, since it is easy to wrap the end loosely around her neck in our bitter Midwest winters, and she loves the easy machine laundering.
Guess I am not that “out there”, I knit a triangular wrap with a cowl neck. It turned out lovely and toasty and my daughter loved it.
I crocheted a be
A never-ending granny square baby blanket.
I crocheted a beautiful dress for my granddaughters. It was purple with three layers of ruffle on the bottom. It took quite a while to complete.
I crochet a afghan for my son. It was done in the afghan stitch with all squares. His name was in the middle and there where animals and toys in the other blocks. Now that he is an adult and a dad his son, my favorite grandson, is using it.
The most unique thing I’ve made is a crochet Cthulhu family. A set of 3 cute monsters in different sizes and embellished to represent mom, dad, and baby Cthulhu.
I had a lady ask for help with something…..and I did knit on it just a bit…..but laughed and giggled through it all……..a thong for her husband!
So far, to date, the most unique thing I have crocheted was a fat ladybug pillow. It was so round and cute though.
I crocheted a doily wreath that had to be stiffened for wall hanging. It was adorned with pointsettias, leaves and ribbon. Difficult but fun!
Most unique would be one I am currently in the middle of finishing. My husband is a programmer and uses the programming language “GO” which has a gopher for a…I guess you’d call it a mascot. I took a knitted pattern and had to adjust to crochet. It’s like a blue jellybean with eyes, nose, mouth.
A plarn tote bag with plastic shopping bags from stores. I have made several for a fundraiser at church and everybody loves them, since Chicago is doing away with plastic bags in stores after the first of the year.
I crocheted an Easter basket for my son. We had moved & I had gotten rid of all the Easter baskets & had yarn & found a pattern so I crocheted the basket for his goodies.
A baby blanket
I crocheted a ‘Dust Buster’ thingie for the top of a mop or broom handle to clean spiders webs and dust bunnies from the ceiling and walls. I brought it to work for cleaning day and everyone wanted one. I think I ended up making over a dozen for my co-workers!
Thanks for the chance to win!
A wrestling mask hat for my son
I was asked to make a stuffed scorpion for a little boy I babysit. He kept watching me make dolls and cats and didn’t like them… so I asked what he wanted and I created that for him.
THank you
I mostly make afghans, so the most unique thing I have made is a doll and clothes for her
Last year I crochet a Cowl for my dogs. They love wearing it and I plan on making more for them this year. After all, a dog can never have enough Cowls.
I just finished a hooded fox cowl.
I made a really cute Santa Face wall hanging which was made out of pieces sewn together. There was the beard (white), the face (pink), the eyes (white with black centers), the hat, (red with white pom-pom). Took about an hour to sew pieces together. It was a hit with family.
Well I guess it would have to be an afghan that I got out of a pattern book that was triangle motifs with 3 interlocking circles inside, and then put together to form octagons. It was super different from anything I’d ever made or seen, and I’ve been crocheting since I’m 5. But when I went to put it together the pattern was wrong. (which I find all the time) So I kept the squares for a real long time knowing one day I was gonna figure something out, and then years later I saw a pic on the internet(when I made the triangles the internet wasn’t even around) of a square with 4 interlocking circles inside. It was a miracle!! SOOOOOOOO I took all the triangles apart, figured out how to add another interlocking circle and figured out how to make it into a square. And it worked!! I also ran out of 2 of the circle colors but then there was another miracle. I found them in my stash in another bag. All of the colors were in there so I was good to go. The whole thing was an absolute miracle!!! I’m so glad to have finally gotten a chance to share this story with people that would understand how amazing the whole thing is LOL!!
I crocheted a cupcake purse.
I’m a beginning crocheter so just about every project is new and unique for me! The most interesting thing that I have done so far is to change the pattern for an owl motif I was making to have the ears be pointier. It tool several tries but I finally prevailed. Love my new hobby.
I crochet a shawl with the Virgin Mary’s head shot on it turned out beautiful never seen anything like it.
I crocheted a pony head complete with a bridle and mounted it on a broomstick handle for my 3year old niece. I made the pony’s head turquoise with a pink main with a brown bridle. She absolutely loved it and that was in 1992. I believe she still has it today. I make lap afghans for veterans in the Minneapolis Veterans Home and for breast cancer fund raisers.
I have made seversl amurigami stuffed toys. They were all different and fun to make.
I am busy making hats to give away to our clients now that the weather is getting colder and they will need them especially in the mornings.
I haven’t crocheted it yet, but the no-kill shelter where I volunteer has a pattern for a crocheted doll of their mascot. I’m waiting to be sent the pattern so I can start on it. =^..^=
I made a really cool baby blanket where i crocheted over a long knitting needle to make a canvas, then i did a needle point sale boat in red, white and blue.
The most unusual thing I’ve ever made was a crocheted naked mole rat amigurumi, These animals are seriously ugly, there was no way to make it a cute ami, either, it was just butt ugly and the client and the recipient of it both loved it. Crazy.
I have made so many things! My latest is a cabbage patch kid hat and a jesters hat. Ive made a stuffed animal sized elephant.
The most unique thing that I have crocheted is a giraffe.
Crochet Easter baskets with crochet Chocolate bunny, yellow chicks and little lambs. Best and most fun project EVER! made about 60 and sold most of them. Donated the rest to needy kids who may not have received an Easter basket last year.
I’m new to crocheting so I haven’t had a chance to crochet alot of things, but I’d say the most unique would be, one of those breastfeeding beanies. I made for a friend who breastfeeds and had mentioned she wanted on, so i made her a couple.
I’ve crocheted loads of animal or character hats…..Elmo, Minion, Hello Kitty, and puppies to name a few. Just last night I crocheted a washable cover for my Swiffer wet jet to replace the disposable pads. Some day soon, I’d like to yarn bomb (crochet) the coat rack in my office! 🙂
A decorative and inconspicuous pill holder
The most unique thing I ever crocheted was Jack-O-Lantern pins for 4 classrooms (about 100 kids) at my kid’s elementary school for their Halloween Party. I even decorated them by embroidering the faces on each one.
I have knitted a chain link scarf for a friend for Halloween. I’m crocheted a huge crayon shaped pillow and a dragon with wings for my nephew.
It may not be “unique”, but one of my most recent projects was a blanket that looks like Captain America’s shield. My youngest son just loves it!
I crocheted several different sea animals for a friend to decorate her bathroom.
When I was 10 we drove from California to Alaska for vacation. My mom and I crocheted the whole way in the truck. It started to get colder as we went and so I made my mom a crocheted nose warmer (a funny little circular thing with crocheted ties to go around your head) She still has it to this day.
I have been crocheting for about 15 years. Most recently, I done some stuffed animals including a cow, pig, moose and monkey. Most unique is the Amish puzzle puzzle ball. I LOVE Red Heart yarn!!
After retiring about a year ago I started knitting again. The first pattern I tried that looked like I could do it was a dreidel. It was described as a catnip toy but I made it as a decoration. It didn’t turn out too bad and was recognizable which was good. The other unique project, at least for me, was a potato chip scarf. Took me a few times to understand how it worked but it turned out great.
I made a large caterpillar for my youngest granddaughter. She loves the colors.
Reading all of the previous comments reminded me of many knit and crochet projects I have made through the years. It was a nice trip down memory lane. One year I crocheted Christmas Tree Snowflake ornaments for gifts and had almost forgotten about them until recently one of my daughters told me that she can’t find her set. (Too many helpers putting seasonal items away at her house.) Would I make some more for her? Of course! But I couldn’t find my smaller hooks and had to buy some more. No one to blame but myself for that and for not being able to find those lovely old patterns. The many needlework sites online helped with getting new patterns. But now my old hands are having a tough time working such fine thread again. Maybe those snowflakes are not so unique but this new old experience certainly is. I think I’ll stick to big needle projects after this.
I crocheted a doll for my granddaughters 3rd birthday.
I have knitted a cozy for a five gallon whiskey bottle.
Just started crocheting again last year so not a lot done besides several afghans. But the most unique items would have to be a retro trivet that is circles woven together, or a giraffe that my daughter claimed while the pieces were still loose in a box. I do have plans to make a lot of different items. It’s really fun watching a project coming together.
I crochet with sticks to make beautiful blankets.
I’ve been knitting and crocheting since I was 10 yrs old. That’s 54 yrs of sweaters, afghans, hats, mittens, gloves, scarfs, doilies, doll clothes, baby layettes and toys. I think my most unique was a pair of cowboy booties for my great grandsons in NC. I’ve knitted for so long I’ve probably done many unique things just can’t remember them all. I’ve had such enjoyment from a simple thing like yarn!
I don’t know how unique my projects have been, but I enjoy a challenge! 😉
My husband, two kids, and I collect gnomes so while my husband was deployed to Afghanistan I made him a gnome. By the time the gnome made it to him the eyes had melted off but he still appreciated the thoughtfulness lol.
I knitted a Mario Bros doll, without pattern, for my 4-5 years old boy (at that time). I used 8 double-pointed needles because I didnt know about circular ones lolll but he still have it and sleep with it. Here’s the guy:

An entrelac shawl. I wanted to try the pattern. Now I take it into the movies with me to stay warm under. I take it to church too because sometimes the sanctuary is cold.
I have made many unique and unusual sweaters. … I made a sweater for my grandson with interchangeable patches on it- which included a cloth book that I sewed to keep the patches in order. I made grandchildren sweaters with matching hats, then took plastic canvas forms and made them matching purses- duplicating the knitting pattern to cross stitch for the bag. I have knit a pennant banner for my nephew with his initials knit onto the flags of the pennant. I am currently working on a knit afghan for my daughter that is outlined with pug dogs- from a cross stitch pattern that I adapted for knitting. I love the freedom and creativity of knitting, crochet and sewing.
I crocheted the centerpieces for my recent wedding, which consisted of doilies I made into bowls and crocheted flowers. I also crocheted a heart garland, purses for my bridesmaids gifts, and my shawl! But the most “unique” thing I have probably crocheted was a giant rib-stitch blanket. It took a lot of yarn and a lot of time…. But it is definitely warm!
I made A cat with a backpack last year. I named her Jasmine and wrote a story about a small kitty traveling called “Jasmine’s Journeys”. I sent the cat to my daughter at NYU. My daughter still has Jasmine in her dorm this year.

I crochet all the time and give my work away to my friends.. My son who is now 24 still has a afghan crocheted in primary block colors and a lion called Lenny
I found a crocheted hat at one of the local department stores, I sat down and figured out the pattern, left the hat at the store, went home and crocheted the hat for my niece. Everyone was flabergasted that I did that. It turned out just like the store one only better since it was hand made. I loved it and so did my niece.
I made a hat for my new niece with matching booties. It was my first time and they turned out perfect!
My first attempt at making my own pattern for a baby dress was a hilarious failure. It was way too small for any human infant. It was cute though and it fit a decorative teddy bear my Mom had.
I crocheted a “Mike” monster from Monsters, Inc.
The most unusual art I’ve crocheted was “Yard Art”. I got tired of missing items from my yard so I ‘decorated’ a small dead tree with freeform crochet (some of not so nice subjects).
Love the creativity and use of various yarns.
I think that the funniest thing ( and it really isn’t funny) was a baby sweater I tried to make when I was just starting to crochet. I crocheted soooo tight that it fit my dolls. I was very up set about it. I wanted to be so proud of it ,instead I was very disappointed . I was maybe about 7 years old at the time. I’m now 77. So I’m now I crochet much, much looser when working with yarn and have made many beautiful afghans and other crocheted items.
I crocheted an afghan using the afghan stitch. It had 5 panels. Then cross stitched wisteria on it.
I do a lot of Amigurumi, but probably the most unique were the 4th and 10th doctors from the Doctor Who series

A tote bag from recycled plastic bags
Hi! I generally stick to simple things and let the yarn colors speak, but I would say the most creative afghan I made was a baby crib blanket for one niece which was a rainbow patter of soft pastel colors all in that popcorn stitch. Even using worsted weight yarn it was quite warm for the weight of all that yarn. I edged it with a couple layers of antique ivory looking ruffled lace.
I crocheted an Amigurumi marshmallow, it was square with a little face and I stuck it on a brown pipe cleaner for the stick. It fooled the kids round the campfire but didn’t catch fire!
This past winter, I crochet the following toys: 2 owls, 1 bunny with carrot, 1 frog and the best of all, 1 deer for my granddaughter. Lots of fun and plan on doing some more.
I’ve crocheted a lot of off-the-wall things. A TARDIS baby blanket & sonic screwdriver rattle for my youngest niece, cloches and beanies with a variety of geeky decorations (Star Trek, Harry Potter, and Minecraft to name a few)… but the hands-down most unique crochet project was a set of nun-chucks. One of my daughters was Michelangelo (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) for Halloween and she refused to accept her costume as “complete” without a set of ‘chucks… but being in elementary school, there was no way we could use anything that might be construed as a weapon: so, I took brown and gray yarn and some fiberfill and crocheted a pair of ‘chucks for her costume.
I’ve knit a throw using the feathers and fans pattern. I used a mixture of 8 different wools in a variety of autumn colors to create a fantastic texture and warmth for our very cold evenings here in northern Alberta. I finished the throw by crocheting a 1″ border around it to keep it in its’s original shape and size of 60″ x 72″.

The most unique thing I have crocheted would be; A friend has a bassett hound, he had troubles when going out in the snow. Certain “things” would drag thru the snow/ice, which was painful. I made a pattern and made him mittens for “that part”, they keep him snuggly warm and all frost burn is gone.
Last summer I made a bunch of barefoot sandals for all my nieces and great-nieces.
I have been having fun knitting & crocheting for my new granddaughter, I made stuffed raccoon, teddy bear, rabbits and crocheted cowboy boots, baby uggs, maryjanes & baby sockassins!

Jolly Poo amigurimi! It’s exactly how it sounds…a pile of poo with a smiley face!!! I made it for a friend and she loved it!!! We use it now at work as an elf on the shelf somebody puts it in a different place everyday!
A crocheted Christmas tree.

As a child, my grandmother taught me how to crochet. We lost her December of 2013 and in her memory, I decided to re-teach myself how to crochet. On a visit to Tucson, AZ, we found a yarn/craft shop. There was a beautiful multicolor afghan on display with geometric lines, etc. The pattern was alittle complicated and entitled Navajo, and I wanted it. The owner would not sell a copy, so after negotiating a sale with her for something else, she put a copy in my bag. I came home and crocheted one. 20 yrs later, it’s still used and a favorite.

I suppose you couldn’t call what I crocheted unique. I am new to this, so I started with crocheting little rectangular tablet holder for my cousin and another for my niece’s cellphone. She also had a hat, cape and hand muff. I sewed pearl beads on the snowflakes and it turned out just gorgeous. My mother-in-law collected dolls and she loved it! After she passed that was the one thing that I wanted back and I will always treasure it.
I am currently working on my first project ever which is a very simple black scarf. I look forward to try all sorts of new stitches and project when I can afford to buy yarn to do the projects I would like to play with. I guess the scarf would be this most likely answer then.

I crocheted a hooded infinity scarf with black yarn and I fashioned beads out of paper brads shaped like stars and worked them into the hood.
I crocheted a throw for my mom a few years back in the shape of a BINGO CARD as she was an avid player. Since she has passed, I now have that throw and think of her every time I wrap myself up in it. The card had all the numbers and the free space crocheted right into it in the afghan stitch. It was great fun to make it for her and she enjoyed it for quite some time. It is so refreshing when something is so appreciated. My mom also was always complaining about her nose being cold, so I knit her a nose warmer as well.
The most unique thing I’ve knitted is a fairy doll. Took a lot of pieces but it was super cute!
I am finishing a “Cat Cave” that will be felted.
Laura

a turtle shell with attached hat for my Grandson’s newborn pics

Its really difficult and competitive to get a Best of Show in any stitching category. Thats my story.
Also knitted a panda bear one year which my granddaughter ended up with. It was knitted in 16 pcs from a pattern in the book McTague Knit Toys, by Barron’s Fiona McTAgue I found in the library. It had amazing knitted toy suggestions, clowns, dolls, fairys, animals. It was an amazing challenge. It did get a blue ribbon but no Best of Show.

It’s not unique, but it’s different. My 6yr old wanted hats for some of his stuffed animals so he sat down with me and described what he wanted while I crocheted them. They came out cute and he was happy, which was the best part.
I had followed, Tucson Representative, Gabby Gifford’s political career and when she was shot in Tucson in 2011, I was very concerned. When she was moved to Texas for her rehab to be near her husband, astronaut Mark Kelly, I crocheted and sent her two shoulder warps to wear while in the hospital, to keep her shoulders warm. We all know how hospital gowns are not the warmest items of clothing. It was an honor to make them for her and a greater honor to have her to publicly acknowledge receiving them. She is working very hard and will be back in the public eye, I hope, very soon.

I have one of those “knitting looms” for stocking hats and have and still am making hats for cancer victims. Our daughter works at a clinic and many of the patients get a hat or 2 and they appreciate it. When word got around our rv park that I am doing this, several people donated their yarn. So many kind souls!
Try sitting opposite your instructor and work just as she/he does. This means working in the same direction – ignoring left and right, using directions like ‘the side near the table’ or ‘the side near the door’. It can be done. Good luck!

The most unique crochet gift that I’ve made was the Simpson’s family with Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa and the baby. These were my son’s favorite tv characters with no crochet patterns available, so I created by own. It was such an hilarious and challenging project with the entire family watching as each round was added to create the toys. It turned into a labor of love and fun!
The most challenging thing that I have crocheted were 4 Easter bunny baskets for my kids
Over the past 6 months I have been crocheting amigurumi. The first one I made was with a group of others crocheters. Since then I’ve made 3 others on my own. I really enjoy the creativeness of it.
I am a self taught crocheter. Being a right-brain person, sometimes it’s hard for me to follow patterns, so, I do some crochet ‘sculpting’ of wearable art. I crocheted a 1930’s pilots cap with goggles the same shape as Amelia Earhart’s. The goggles were done as separate pieces stitched to the cap. I was very pleased with the lens frames. They gave the goggles the three dimensional look I wanted. I have also done Minions from “Despicable Me” with sculpted eyes with their lenses giving them, too, the three dimensional look. With the pupil being a separate piece I can make the eyes looking to the side with a mischievous smile embroidered underneath. They’re so cute.
I am an advanced beginner, so I have mainly only crocheted beanies, scarves, and baby blankets. I did also make myself a belt of joined flowers. I am about to attempt my first Amigurumi. It will be a little ami. candy corn. 🙂
Butterfly magnets
The most unique project I crocheted was a 5′ Tall stuffed monkey for my grandson. It was my first try at a stuffed animal toy for my new grandson, but I kind of got carried away and it got way too big, but he loved it and used it to sit on and wrap its arms around him! I saved a picture of the monkey because I have since been able to tone down my crocheted toys to a more normal size.
I have crocheted all of the my little ponies and made clothes and accessories to go with them. I have also done the totoro and catbus. Anything unique is fun.
Monkeys and Penguins. Fun to learn.

I make afghans for various fundraisers, and crocheted pillows. Family & friends usually request either for their “special time of the year”.I use different sizes and colors of wool, and no scrap is ever dumped! Whatever I don’t use in my crocheting patterns, my 9 year old daughter uses for plastic canvas projects!
I made jewelry by crocheting using embroidery floss and a small steel hook.
Well, I’m really just starting out. Had basic knowledge on how to crochet since I was a kid, but this past year, I taught myself how to knit, and learned so many new ways to crochet. The most unique thing I’ve crocheted was a Elsa Hat with hair and crown for my best friends’ nieces Hallowe’en costume this year.
The prettiest thing I created has to be the beautiful Christening gown I made for a friend. I also made my brand new grandson’s coming home outfit. (Newsboy cap, booties, diaper cover and jacket) and a ring pillow for my friends wedding.
The most unique thing that I have ever made was probably a crocheted bag that I made that looks like an owl. I have also made animals and dishcloths.
The most unique item I have crocheted would probably have to be the little beanie I made for my puppy. It started off as a coaster but it somehow gradually formed itself into a hat haha. It’s got a little pom pom on the top and two slots on the sides for his ears to go through.
The most unique thing I have knitted is a sweater with open and closed squares that I designed myself. It had ribbing at the waist and end of sleeve. The sleeves were a three quarter sleeve and the neckline was wide so it could be worn off the shoulder.

I knitted a sweater for my great nephew with a John Deer tractor on the front of it. I also knitted dresses for his two sister’s.
My most unique crocheted project to date has been a ‘Shaun, the Sheep’. My sister-in-law sent me the pattern, but I didn’t realize the pattern was written with European abbreviations. Not cluing in to that caused my first leg ending up being twice as long as it should have been. While this caused great amusement in my household it meant Shaun would have been an extremely l–o–n–g sheep. Eventually all the pieces were completed correctly and put together and now it is a highly desired critter reclining on our DVD shelf.
Baskets. I love to make them. Also snowflakes, they are very challenging .
I had to crochet a flatworm for my husband’s science class. Evidently, the teacher still keeps it on her desk!!
I haven’t crochet anything unusual. I did go out of my comfort zone and crochet a slouchy bear hat starting from bottom up. It took me a whole week to do, but I finished it and was very happy with it.
This blanket looks like it would be fun to make and i look forward to trying to make it. Right now i am making Halloween costumes and trying to teach my eight year old daughter how to crochet. Its been a challenge but she is determined to learn.

The whole doll is crocheted with the hair being strands of yarn. When the month is done, the child sends me back the dolls and I crochet them one of their own. It has been a huge help to the children that have participated so far and they love getting their own dolls as a thank you. This is also in the U.K. where I crocheted dolls for the woman who runs the project there, because military children deal with the same anxieties of military life no matter what country they live in.
I’m trying to teach myself to knit. I used to crochet when I was younger. I would crochet scarves and granny squares. In my family crochet was passed down in the family. My great grandmother taught my mother, my mother taught me, and I am trying to teach my niece.
One thing that was unique that I knitted was a crayon caddy.
I make handmade Crocheted hammocks using paracord! I love using paracord because it comes in basically any color i want, its durable, strong, rot and mildew resistant. But i love to crochet them because its just so much more comfortable to lay on. They are double-wide hammocks, measuring 12+ feet long and 56 inches wide, and can easily hold two people at once.

I coundn’t find a letter pattern I liked so I graphed a pattern for a gold M within a blue field. It was a big hit with my friend who is a big fan.
I crochet a very large owl wall hanging tapestry, with yarn strips to create a shag type effect as his body, big brown wiggly eyes and a small tree branch added at his feet as if he were perched in a tree. One of the biggest projects I have crocheted. But very beautiful when done !
my most unusual item was a cover for my sons numchucks when he was doing martial arts. whenever his belt changed i found yarn to match his belts
The most unique thing was a sweater for my Chippet (Chihuahua Whippet). She has very long legs, a barrel chest and very large ears but is only 10 lbs. So I had to modify the pattern quite extensively to fit her. The most difficult though was trying it on her throughout the process, she didn’t care for that at all ! It turned out very cute, it’s black/white/grey (variegated yarn) and has black lace at the end by her rump.

I crocheted a very large circular ripple blanket pattern but used hemp string that you use in gardening instead of fine yarn…when it was pinned out on a wall at all the points and stretched smoothly, it created really beautiful shadow art and the texture was really interesting. I must admit, my hands were sore after working on it for several days. It was part of a fibre art project.
I crocheted an owl baby blanket.

My grandmother Lidia (RIP) taught me first when I was 12 yrs old with the simple chain, single & double crochet. Mother Sara (from my year in a Mexican school ran by church) taught me the knitting basics when I was 16 1/2 yrs old, but I have been self teaching myself from the internet all the other great different techniques.
Oops pushed the submit before I was done. Mother Sara showed me a pattern for a praying shawl that she called “welcome” and I knitted the first time ever this lace shawl for a dear friend that recently retired as her “welcoming to a new chapter to her life”. I knitted an owl, a fairly large owl for my soon to be grandaughter. I thought it was terrible and ugly and was no where near satisfied with the project. I had every intention of either pulling it apart or destroying it, but before I could my son whisked it away when I wasn’t home. Seems he and my daughter in law loved the thing. They predict it will be their daughters favorite toy. Goes to show we are usually our own worst critic.

In 2006, I designed and knitted my daughter’s wedding veil from laceweight Missouri wool.
I wouldn’t call it unique, but maybe just a case of serendipity. I was crocheting a hat (this was my first project ever), and it grew to such proportions (I didn’t know better at the time, didn’t keep track of my rounds nor my stitch counts), and didn’t want to unravel the whole thing after 25 rounds. I added a strap across the middle instead, and it ended up being a basket that I hold my skeins in. My husband sometimes will empty it out and put it on his head, claiming that it’s still good as a hat as it droops well past his nose.
I’ve never knit anything unique. I usually knit sweaters, or other wearables.
I crocheted a hooded scarf with cat ears and paws! Sorry if this posts twice, I tried to post it and my internet went wonky!

Each row contained a stitch that was specific to her life; the theater seat stitch (her favorite night out), the leaf stitch (her house is in the woods), double crochet for her new life with her hubby, the seed stitch (they are farmers). All in her favorite colors. She just loved it!!!
I had foot surgery and was going to be off my foot for a couple weeks. I made myself a bottle holder/ phone pocket to hang on my crutches. Helped SO much!
I made a sling cozy for my mother-in-law. She had fallen off her bike and had broken her wrist, so her arm was in a sling. The strap rubbed her neck constantly so I created a “sling cozy” to wrap around the sling strap so that it provided a soft buffer between her neck and the strap. Here’s the link to my project on my ravelry page. 🙂 http://ravel.me/mrsschomer/cfsas

Several years ago I wanted to knit a special sweater for my husband in his favorite color peach with a black nordic style pattern on it. We were apart during that time and I had trouble with the size. So I measured it on me, assuming that he was not too much bigger than me. Needless to say, it was too small for him. I had made a gorgeous sweater for myself.
My most unique project I have ever done were three arugarumi stuffed Chthulu monsters in three different sizes. (reference H.P.Lovecraft, author) The smallest one was 2 1/2″ high, for a key chain. One was 4 1/2″ and the last 6 1/2″ that were to be used as bookends for his horror book collection. Just thinking of the little one (done in rainbow colors) makes me giggle.

Puppet scarf or maybe fox scarf or maybe catnip mouse…..hard to decide.
Unfortunately I can’t tell you the most unique things I’ve crocheted because they’re in my book coming out in summer 2015, details are still top secret. Second most unique thing was Disney’s Winnie the Pooh collection–Eeyore, Piglet, Pooh, Tigger–so cute!
Well I’m still learning quite a bit, I’m afraid mine is boring, a shawl, but I am in the middle of my first creature, a monster for my daughter.

The Stained Glass Cathedral Rose Afghan
Last year I crocheted 4 afghans for 4 special little ladies. 2 are my neices, the other 2 a little sisters that love my neices like family. While afghans are not unique, the afghans themselves were. I used all discontinued yarns in the girls favourite colours. That way, they are truly 1 of a kind for 1 of a kind girls 🙂
About 6 months ago I picked up my yarn and hook again………..I love it! Not sure why I put it down for so long, but I am back at it trying new things and doing the old too! So much fun!

The most unique project I’ve ever Crocheted was a Faux Fur Ear Flap Hat. My hubby is bald and he adores ear flap hats for the warmth. I used the Faux Fur yarn to make it super- soft on his skin and chose a mink color so it was masculine. He loved it! Sometimes I even have to remind him to take it off inside!
Way back in 1978, a friend of mine in the AF, was going to Korea, so I made him some “special” warmers for a certain part of his body. LOL
Loom knitted Teddy Bear made out of rainbow colored yarn (sorry don’t remember the name) that was red heart. May not seem odd to most folks, I never in a million years would have imagined you could make a mini teddy bear that way before I did it. The lady I gave it to calls it her hippie teddy bear!
I crocheted a table runner with no. 10 yarn for my daughter .
I am currently working on a scrap-gan where all of the tails are left out on one side, the other side just looks like a regular afghan made with a half double crochet. My 8 year old Grandson has already claimed it as his own.

Year ago I knitted a Peter Heater as a joke present for a male friend turning 30.
It was a huge hit at his party and everyone was talking about it for months afterwards.
I also made a poem to go with it, but can only now remember the first two lines;
I made this little Peter Heater especially just for you
for lonely nights when the wife is away and I know you’d be feeling blue
The most unique project but maybe to some it wouldn’t be, I made a hat for a young woman in her 20’s who had had a bone marrow transplant. I had to make sure the size came out right and I had to buy the right yarn. I wanted to get a really soft yarn because I already knew she had lost her hair; all her hair and the worst thing she would have to experience would be a coarse yarn. When the young lady saw the hat which was turquoise in color she was so surprised and grateful. She had asked that I would make it turquoise but when she and her mom saw I didn’t have any skeins that color her mother told her to pick another color. Since I had to make a hat I decided to make it the color of her choice. She loved the hat.
I knitted an entralac hat with many points and chaging colors. It was fun to watch it blossom in to a very unique oiece. Difficult at first but well worth the effort, since the first hat I have now knit 3 others for friends.

I designed filet crochet charts of an alphabet and lots of ‘objects’ – smiley faces, crosses, stars, hearts, even golf balls, tees – as fillers between the letters. Then I put these charts together to make afghans for my kids, nieces, and nephews with their names and for my brothers and their wives with their professional symbols and sports objects – no names for the big ‘kids’! I did each afghan in one color continuously working from the bottom to the top! My sister-in-laws still have their afghans draped over their sofas and say they get lots of inquiries and compliments.
I had nothing but time on my hands while in rehab!! And all my family was with me all the way!!
I remember making a bright pink and purple poncho that I wore in grammar school.:)

I have not seen another one in years.
Being left handed & newly self taught I have yet to venture into wildly unique crocheting but have managed to create a blanket with matching scarf for each of my daughters stuffed animal buddies. They really seam to enjoy them especially camping out.

I crocheted a straw hat out of strips of yellow plastic grocery bags.
A teddy bear.
I guess the most unique thing I’ve crocheted is an heirloom afghan. It took a long time to make. The edging is beautiful. I had to make each strip of the border and sew them onto the blanket. A lot of trial and error went into that blanket to get everything to fit together right. It was worth it tho. I entered it in the fair and got a blue ribbon and grand champion for it. When I went to pick it up the lady thought my grandma made it lol. Guess I looked too young to be able to make something like that.
I am not so imaginative I guess, but I made lots of snowflakes.
Hmmm, I’m thinking the most unique might have been the Knight’s helmets (crochet) but they were also pretty fun & turned out well!!! 😀 Although, the turkey amigurumi might have been a close runner-up LOL

It was totally from my imagination. As long as she loved it, that was all that mattered.
I have only been knitting since this summer, so nothing unusual yet. Maybe what is most unusual is why I am currently knitting a dishtowel — a dark brown towel for him to dirty up when cleaning his cast iron pans 🙂
I crocheted a blanket for a high school friend that had a baby. She had a son and named him Eli and I crocheted his name into the blanket without a pattern. The lines and edges of his name were perfect (I thought). I made it about the size of a queen bed and he still uses it to this day, he is almost 2. My friend has to wash it while he sleeps because he hates being away from his “Manna” blanket.
I crochet constantly, when I’m not working. I crocheted 20 bookmarks with spider webs at one end and a spider at the other. This was for my grade 3 class, that I teach to celebrate our reading of “Charlotte’s Web”. The kids loved them, and I loved making them for them.

Crochet stuffed owls for my mom and suster
I would say the most unique project I have made is the dog sweater I am crocheting for my dog now. Not so much what it is, but the design in it. She has a unique body shape–long neck and broad chest for a dog of her size, so I have had to make a lot of modifications to the base pattern I am using (Doggie Snuggle-up by Red Heart.) I am adding a lot of ruffles to make it really pretty, and adding a scalloped edge where the buttonholes will be. She will look very fashionable, and will have a doggie sweater like no other!!!

I’m still learning, but my most unique project so far has been belts for my daughter since she’s allergic to metals on regular belts.
Each grandchild believed his/her baby afghan was the most unique, and lots of love went into each one as well as each replacement for the “binkies” that were loved and chewed down to the last thread!
