Materials:

  • Red Heart Soft 20 balls 4601 Off White Or Red Heart Super Soft: 10 balls 4601 Off White
  • Susan Bates Circular Knitting Needles: 13mm [US 17] circular knitting needle 36” (90 cm) long. Note: straights or a shorter circular can be used for pillow.
  • Stitch markers, large cable needle, 18 x 18” (45.5 x 45.5 cm) pillow form, yarn needle

Gauge: 10 sts = 4” (10 cm); 12 rows = 4” (10 cm) in pattern with 3 strands of yarn held together. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size needle to obtain the gauge.

Throw measures 45 x 56” (114.5 x 142 cm)
Pillow measures 18 x 18” (45.5 x 45.5 cm

Special Stitches:

  • 3/3 LC (3 over 3 Left Cross) = Slip next 3 sts to cable needle and hold in front, k3, then k3 from cable needle.
  • 3/3 RC (3 over 3 Right Cross) = Slip next 3 sts to cable needle and hold in back, k3, then k3 from cable needle.
  • 4/4 LC (4 over 4 Left Cross) = Slip next 4 sts to cable needle and hold in front, k4, then k4 from cable needle.
  • 4/4 RC (4 over 4 Right Cross) = Slip next 4 sts to cable needle and hold in back, k4, then k4 from cable needle.

Pattern Stitches:

  1. Left Cable (over 8 sts) Rows 1–8: Beginning with a right side row (knit), work in Stockinette st (knit on right side, purl on wrong side) for 8 rows. Row 9 (right side – cable row): 4/4 LC. Rows 10–16: Work in Stockinette st for 7 rows. Repeat Rows 1–16 for Left Cable pattern.
  2. Horseshoe Cable (over 12 sts) Rows 1–4: Beginning with a right side row, work in Stockinette st for 4 rows. Row 5 (right side – cable row): 3/3 RC, 3/3 LC Rows 6–10: Work in Stockinette st for 5 rows. Repeat Rows 1–10 for Horseshoe Cable pattern.
  3. Right Cable (over 8 sts) Rows 1–8: Beginning with a right side row, work in Stockinette st for 8 rows. Row 9 (right side – cable row): 4/4 RC. Rows 10–16: Work in Stockinette st for 7 rows. Repeat Rows 1–16 for Right Cable pattern.

Notes:

  • Throw and pillow are worked holding 3 strands of yarn together throughout. Designer recommends rolling 3 strands into a single ball before beginning so that yarn does not tangle as easily.
  • Sixteen balls of Soft yarn are needed to make the throw only. Four balls of Soft yarn are needed to make the pillow only.
  • Work back and forth on circular needle as if working with straight needles.
  • Cable patterns can be worked by following written instructions or reading charts. Read right side rows of charts from right to left and wrong side rows from left to right.
  • Stitch markers are placed on both sides of each cable pattern. Slip markers when you come to them. Count the stitches between the markers from time to time to ensure that you still have the correct number.

I also crocheted a huge Christmas stocking, mine is 10″ wide for 26″, I was trying to to put in a present that my daughter didn’t imagine I will give her: A long wooded scratching “arm”, it was something that will make her laugh. But the one thing I really enjoyed was a tiny weeny amigurumi elephant for my daughter house/car key chain. It came out incredible, people even doubted that I did it, they though it was store bought.

I crocheted a beautiful white afghan. A friend of mine purchased the kit but did not know how to crochet well so she asked me to work out the pattern and teach her. I worked out the pattern, taught her. I made an afghan according to the pattern; however, she never did.

No one wants to buy what I make so I end up just giving it away. Love making things and learning new stitches. I would have to say the most unique item that was crocheted was, a blue eye for a swap. The swap was called the “evil eye swap”, the eye was crocheted flat and framed for my partner.
Then for the knitted item, it would have to be the cabled throw I just completed, during a KAL, with Edie Eckman, and the Creative bug web site. If you like cables you should check this out, she used Lion brand yarns.

Probably the flying doily Frisbee … I was intrigued by the name and the concept of a doily flying like a frisbee….. I have made 8 or 9 to date and I am still amazed how well they fly… and they are perfect for indoor play and play with very small children and dogs because it is soft and does not hurt when it hits them…. I usually take one every time I take my kids to the park and most times we leave without because some kid took a liking to it and we let them take it home!! Just gives me an excuse to make another lol!!

My very first crochet project was an afghan, white, pink and green. It had pink flowers that popped out of the center of granny squares. I used Red Heart yarn since it was the best looking and I made the afghan for my Mom. I no longer have the pattern, but wish I did. i found it in the back of an old magazine.

The most unusual item I crocheted was a Turtle Trivet, crocheted over bottle caps then sewn together. I gave them out for Christmas presents, circa 1977. Every once in a while, I come across that pattern in my stash. I have improved my crafting to make prettier things as gifts. My family still loves all my handmade gifts no matter what it is.

The most unique item I have ever crocheted to date would be a Yip Yip Alien from Sesame Street. A friend of mine posted a link to the pattern she found on Pintrest to her Facebook and ask if any of her crafty friends could make her one. I gave it a try and it turned out a lot better than I thought it would.

The most Unique thing I have knitted would have to be a Chemo Cap specifically for a woman I work with who was going through Breast Cancer treatment. I felt that that was least thing I could do for her as she was going through this testing time in her life……the best thing about it was I did not tell her that I made it and found out she loved it and she did wear it to work often.

Two years ago when our daughter and her fiance were planning their wedding, Justin, my now son-in-law asked me to knit kilt hose. He was wearing a kilt and wanted to wear kilt hose and not bought ones. He asked me at Easter and they got married the end of June. I must say the hose turned out beautifully, but I was knitting every spare minute as the pattern was quite intricate and I was using size 0 needles. I was so proud of that project!

My sister was recovering from stage 4 cancer. She found out that she and her husband were approved for adoption. The dress that my sister wore at the baptism of her daughter (my niece) was what I knit for her. I also knit the sweater that she put on her daughter when it got chilly later on. I had only been knitting for about a year when this took place. I also knit this same sister a sweater full of cables that was named the same as my sister –same spelling.

I needed a dice bag to bring to a gaming convention in Indy this summer, and the pattern I liked best looked like a giant eyeball. I didn’t quite have “giant eyeball” colors in my stash, though, so my dice bag looks like either a giant space-alien eyeball or a very detailed pumpkin . . . depending on which end one looks at!

Well, I used a pattern so it wasn’t wholly unique, but I crocheted huge Winnie the Pooh and Tigger stuffed animals. Never again something so involved… it was a challenge because it was NOT Amigurumi with limbs etc attached to the main body… nearly every piece was crocheted onto the main body, and it got very awkward with this huge Tigger in my lap, as I counted carefully so the tiger stripes would come out correctly!! The fun part was crocheting Pooh’s red tee shirt!

My favorite unusual project was the stocking cap with an extremely long, very slowly tapering end, so it is both a cap and a scarf for my adult daughter, with a pouf made of a crocheted squiggle instead of a traditional pompom (I worry about pompoms coming loose in the laundry). The scarf-cap was all one soft green, but for an interesting texture and eye-appeal, the stitch pattern alternated every few rows. She gets claustrophobic in regular scarves, so she loves this, since it is easy to wrap the end loosely around her neck in our bitter Midwest winters, and she loves the easy machine laundering.

Well I guess it would have to be an afghan that I got out of a pattern book that was triangle motifs with 3 interlocking circles inside, and then put together to form octagons. It was super different from anything I’d ever made or seen, and I’ve been crocheting since I’m 5. But when I went to put it together the pattern was wrong. (which I find all the time) So I kept the squares for a real long time knowing one day I was gonna figure something out, and then years later I saw a pic on the internet(when I made the triangles the internet wasn’t even around) of a square with 4 interlocking circles inside. It was a miracle!! SOOOOOOOO I took all the triangles apart, figured out how to add another interlocking circle and figured out how to make it into a square. And it worked!! I also ran out of 2 of the circle colors but then there was another miracle. I found them in my stash in another bag. All of the colors were in there so I was good to go. The whole thing was an absolute miracle!!! I’m so glad to have finally gotten a chance to share this story with people that would understand how amazing the whole thing is LOL!!

Reading all of the previous comments reminded me of many knit and crochet projects I have made through the years. It was a nice trip down memory lane. One year I crocheted Christmas Tree Snowflake ornaments for gifts and had almost forgotten about them until recently one of my daughters told me that she can’t find her set. (Too many helpers putting seasonal items away at her house.) Would I make some more for her? Of course! But I couldn’t find my smaller hooks and had to buy some more. No one to blame but myself for that and for not being able to find those lovely old patterns. The many needlework sites online helped with getting new patterns. But now my old hands are having a tough time working such fine thread again. Maybe those snowflakes are not so unique but this new old experience certainly is. I think I’ll stick to big needle projects after this.

I have made many unique and unusual sweaters. … I made a sweater for my grandson with interchangeable patches on it- which included a cloth book that I sewed to keep the patches in order. I made grandchildren sweaters with matching hats, then took plastic canvas forms and made them matching purses- duplicating the knitting pattern to cross stitch for the bag. I have knit a pennant banner for my nephew with his initials knit onto the flags of the pennant. I am currently working on a knit afghan for my daughter that is outlined with pug dogs- from a cross stitch pattern that I adapted for knitting. I found a crocheted hat at one of the local department stores, I sat down and figured out the pattern, left the hat at the store, went home and crocheted the hat for my niece. Everyone was flabergasted that I did that. It turned out just like the store one only better since it was hand made. I loved it and so did my niece.

I think that the funniest thing ( and it really isn’t funny) was a baby sweater I tried to make when I was just starting to crochet. I crocheted soooo tight that it fit my dolls. I was very up set about it. I wanted to be so proud of it ,instead I was very disappointed . I was maybe about 7 years old at the time. I’m now 77. So I’m now I crochet much, much looser when working with yarn and have made many beautiful afghans and other crocheted items.

Hi! I generally stick to simple things and let the yarn colors speak, but I would say the most creative afghan I made was a baby crib blanket for one niece which was a rainbow patter of soft pastel colors all in that popcorn stitch. Even using worsted weight yarn it was quite warm for the weight of all that yarn. I edged it with a couple layers of antique ivory looking ruffled lace.

I’ve crocheted a lot of off-the-wall things. A TARDIS baby blanket & sonic screwdriver rattle for my youngest niece, cloches and beanies with a variety of geeky decorations (Star Trek, Harry Potter, and Minecraft to name a few)… but the hands-down most unique crochet project was a set of nun-chucks. One of my daughters was Michelangelo (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) for Halloween and she refused to accept her costume as “complete” without a set of ‘chucks… but being in elementary school, there was no way we could use anything that might be construed as a weapon: so, I took brown and gray yarn and some fiberfill and crocheted a pair of ‘chucks for her costume.

Since she has passed, I now have that throw and think of her every time I wrap myself up in it. The card had all the numbers and the free space crocheted right into it in the afghan stitch. It was great fun to make it for her and she enjoyed it for quite some time. It is so refreshing when something is so appreciated. My biggest surprise was a blue ribbon and Best of Show in knitted articles for a Barbie doll dress that had added floral appliques to it. Barbie was finished in a straw bonnet. Its really difficult and competitive to get a Best of Show in any stitching category. Thats my story.

Also knitted a panda bear one year which my granddaughter ended up with. It was knitted in 16 pcs from a pattern in the book McTague Knit Toys, by Barron’s Fiona McTAgue I found in the library. It had amazing knitted toy suggestions, clowns, dolls, fairys, animals. It was an amazing challenge. It did get a blue ribbon but no Best of Show.

I have been a crocheter for about 46 years now and have crocheted many different things. I make personalized Christmas stockings for all of my children and grandchildren. I create the patterns based on what my children ask for. I also make a bunch of hats such as minion, angry bird, boston terrier, etc.
My first project was a giant granny square afghan, crocheted with neon colors. My mom still has it.
I also am a coordinator for a Before School Program and have taught many students to crochet.

I had followed, Tucson Representative, Gabby Gifford’s political career and when she was shot in Tucson in 2011, I was very concerned. When she was moved to Texas for her rehab to be near her husband, astronaut Mark Kelly, I crocheted and sent her two shoulder warps to wear while in the hospital, to keep her shoulders warm. We all know how hospital gowns are not the warmest items of clothing. It was an honor to make them for her and a greater honor to have her to publicly acknowledge receiving them. She is working very hard and will be back in the public eye, I hope, very soon.

I am a self taught crocheter. Being a right-brain person, sometimes it’s hard for me to follow patterns, so, I do some crochet ‘sculpting’ of wearable art. I crocheted a 1930’s pilots cap with goggles the same shape as Amelia Earhart’s. The goggles were done as separate pieces stitched to the cap. I was very pleased with the lens frames. They gave the goggles the three dimensional look I wanted. I have also done Minions from “Despicable Me” with sculpted eyes with their lenses giving them, too, the three dimensional look. With the pupil being a separate piece I can make the eyes looking to the side with a mischievous smile embroidered underneath. They’re so cute.

Not cluing in to that caused my first leg ending up being twice as long as it should have been. While this caused great amusement in my household it meant Shaun would have been an extremely l–o–n–g sheep. Eventually all the pieces were completed correctly and put together and now it is a highly desired critter reclining on our DVD shelf.

I crochet dolls that go spend time with a military child while their mom or dad is away on orders for more than thirty days. These dolls are known as Dabby Dolls. The whole doll is crocheted with the hair being strands of yarn. When the month is done, the child sends me back the dolls and I crochet them one of their own. It has been a huge help to the children that have participated so far and they love getting their own dolls as a thank you. This is also in the U.K. where I crocheted dolls for the woman who runs the project there, because military children deal with the same anxieties of military life no matter what country they live in.

I began crocheting a few years ago after I retired. I don’t do too many unusual things. In the beginning, my projects were hats and scarves for loved ones; then afghans, especially baby afghans. Last year I made a star garland for the Christmas tree. Now, I spend most of my time crocheting prayer shawls for our church.

The most unique thing was a sweater for my Chippet (Chihuahua Whippet). She has very long legs, a barrel chest and very large ears but is only 10 lbs. So I had to modify the pattern quite extensively to fit her. The most difficult though was trying it on her throughout the process, she didn’t care for that at all ! It turned out very cute, it’s black/white/grey (variegated yarn) and has black lace at the end by her rump.

I made a Fall wreath. I crochet maple leaves, dogwood leaves, sunflowers, & mums then attached them on a wreath covered with hay, two scarecrows & a big orange bow. I crocheted two more leaves & attached one on each scarecrow’s hat. Then crocheted a neck bow tie on one of them. I had so much fun crocheting & putting everything together on the wreath.

I knitted an owl, a fairly large owl for my soon to be grandaughter. I thought it was terrible and ugly and was no where near satisfied with the project. I had every intention of either pulling it apart or destroying it, but before I could my son whisked it away when I wasn’t home. Seems he and my daughter in law loved the thing. They predict it will be their daughters favorite toy. Goes to show we are usually our own worst critic.

I wouldn’t call it unique, but maybe just a case of serendipity. I was crocheting a hat (this was my first project ever), and it grew to such proportions (I didn’t know better at the time, didn’t keep track of my rounds nor my stitch counts), and didn’t want to unravel the whole thing after 25 rounds. I added a strap across the middle instead, and it ended up being a basket that I hold my skeins in. My husband sometimes will empty it out and put it on his head, claiming that it’s still good as a hat as it droops well past his nose.

My most unique project is not just one thing, but a collection! This Christmas I decided to spend less on purchased gifts, and give something truly from my heart. So I am crocheting gifts for everyone in my family. Each person gets something unique. So far I have made 4 hats, 6 scarves, 4 cowls, 2 purses, 1 sweater, 1 toy box, 4 hand puppets, as well as 10 massaging soap savers for all my lovely friends. Only a few things left to make!

The most unique project but maybe to some it wouldn’t be, I made a hat for a young woman in her 20’s who had had a bone marrow transplant. I had to make sure the size came out right and I had to buy the right yarn. I wanted to get a really soft yarn because I already knew she had lost her hair; all her hair and the worst thing she would have to experience would be a coarse yarn. When the young lady saw the hat which was turquoise in color she was so surprised and grateful. She had asked that I would make it turquoise but when she and her mom saw I didn’t have any skeins that color her mother told her to pick another color. Since I had to make a hat I decided to make it the color of her choice. She loved the hat.

I designed filet crochet charts of an alphabet and lots of ‘objects’ – smiley faces, crosses, stars, hearts, even golf balls, tees – as fillers between the letters. Then I put these charts together to make afghans for my kids, nieces, and nephews with their names and for my brothers and their wives with their professional symbols and sports objects – no names for the big ‘kids’! I did each afghan in one color continuously working from the bottom to the top! My sister-in-laws still have their afghans draped over their sofas and say they get lots of inquiries and compliments.

A lot of trial and error went into that blanket to get everything to fit together right. It was worth it tho. I entered it in the fair and got a blue ribbon and grand champion for it. When I went to pick it up the lady thought my grandma made it lol. Guess I looked too young to be able to make something like that.

I crocheted a sweater with a big tri-colored rose on the front, back, and both sleeves. It won a first place ribbon at the fall fair in the town I lived in at the time. I drew the rose and designed the graph pattern using plain graph paper.

When I was teaching myself to crochet, I made a dress for my Barbie doll. It was dark green. I thought she needed something warm for winter. After that I made hats and vests for my stuffed animals. They needed to stay warm in the winter as well.

I used a pattern to crochet a shawl for a friend, then without a pattern I used a special yarn with tassly type stuff on it and ran rows so that her shawl would appear to look like it had leather tassles.. it was gorgeous.. wish I had written down how I did it. It was totally from my imagination. As long as she loved it, that was all that mattered.

I have only been knitting since this summer, so nothing unusual yet. Maybe what is most unusual is why I am currently knitting a dishtowel — a dark brown towel for him to dirty up when cleaning his cast iron pans 🙂

I crocheted a blanket for a high school friend that had a baby. She had a son and named him Eli and I crocheted his name into the blanket without a pattern. The lines and edges of his name were perfect (I thought). I made it about the size of a queen bed and he still uses it to this day, he is almost 2. My friend has to wash it while he sleeps because he hates being away from his “Manna” blanket.

I crochet constantly, when I’m not working. I crocheted 20 bookmarks with spider webs at one end and a spider at the other. This was for my grade 3 class, that I teach to celebrate our reading of “Charlotte’s Web”. The kids loved them, and I loved making them for them.

I would say the most unique project I have made is the dog sweater I am crocheting for my dog now. Not so much what it is, but the design in it. She has a unique body shape–long neck and broad chest for a dog of her size, so I have had to make a lot of modifications to the base pattern I am using (Doggie Snuggle-up by Red Heart.) I am adding a lot of ruffles to make it really pretty, and adding a scalloped edge where the buttonholes will be. She will look very fashionable, and will have a doggie sweater like no other!!!

She loved the name and wanted a Zot doll. I ended up making a red teardrop stuffed animal with blue arms and legs with the word Zot on the back. It became a hit with the group.

Each grandchild believed his/her baby afghan was the most unique, and lots of love went into each one as well as each replacement for the “binkies” that were loved and chewed down to the last thread! The most unique project was patching one where it unraveled from a hole in the center. Anyone have good instructions for that?
