catherineCongratulations, Catherine! Thank you to everyone who participated in our I Love Yarn Day week-long celebration. We hope you enjoyed all the patterns and giveaways!

The day has finally arrived, but we still have one more day to celebrate. All week long we’ve been unveiling a new pattern and prize from amazing companies like Red Heart, Lion Brand, and Spin Rite, ending with a grand prize giveaway!

I Love Yarn Day 2014 banner Celebrate I Love Yarn Day Week: Day #4

Today we’re offering the Countryside Charm Afghan from Spin Rite. Check out the pattern below, plus enter for your chance to win the skeins of Caron United yarn required to make this pattern in today’s giveaway!

Today’s Pattern: Countryside Charm Afghan

We’re head-over-heels for this Countryside Charm Afghan. Can’t you imagine it draped across the arm of a couch in a cottage or cabin? This easy knitting pattern uses three basic stitches to create it’s super cool look. Each square uses one particular stitch so when they’re added together you get a unique throw full of texture. It’s a great jumping off point for anyone just learning how to knit, because you’ll be able to use these basic stitches in a ton of other patterns.

I don’t get out much, I am disabled… so if I won the prize..I would make baby/ receiving blankets for hospitals…Donate to new moms, who are poor, and can’t afford nice things for their newborns.I would also make chemo hats for women and men, children who have cancer and have lost their hair..I WOULD DO THIS, IN LOVING MEMORY OF MY DEAR MOTHER WHO DIED IN APRIL OF THIS YEAR OF TERMINAL BRAIN CANCER!!! My motto is Who ever has the most yarn wins. Since I do not live anywhere near a yarn shop currently, it makes every scrap I have that much more important. I am the one knitting or crocheting while waiting everywhere. On a bus, at the library, during lunch at work, at the doctors office, at the DMV. Can’t get enough. My most requested item from friends? Dish rags.

I have several balls of yarn sitting by my chair at all times. I have at least 2 projects going while I watch TV. At night I have a different project going in my bedroom before I go to sleep. Most everything is for a gift. I have made several sweaters for myself with no pattern. All my friends want what I have on. Last year I made a sweater jacket that came in second in the state craft show. Not sure what to do with myself just sitting. I buy yarn every time there is a sale. I love yarn. 🙂

If the store I go in happens to carry yarn, you best believe I’m going to have a few skeins in my cart even if I don’t need it or have a project in mind for later. I love working with yarn…it allows me to have a way to help others by crocheting for cancer patients, the elderly and sick and those who can be comforted by a soft blanket to wrap around them…it is the most wonderful stress buster and allows me to enjoy the tactile pleasure of handling it while experimenting with color. I guess you’d have to say I’m a “hoarder” when it comes to yarn. I love it!!! My spare bedroom is stacked to the ceiling with yarns and craft supplies. My friend says she doesn’t need to go to a store–just come and shop in my craft room. I unexpected retired last summer and have been knitting constantly since then. I haven’t even made a dent! But then, of course, I keep buying yarn too because the new yarns are just so pretty and I love to see how they work up. Yarn! Yarn!! Yarn!!!

I love yarn! It is so much cheaper than therapy. Soft, cuddly, and I can make it into so many fun things! We need to get a bigger house so that my stash can have it’s own room. Right now it takes up half my living room.

I really, really love yarn, especially soft cuddly yarns, like baby yarn, or boucle. When I see a nice soft yarn on sale, I buy up enough to make myself something, so I have a cupboard full of yarn just waiting to be knitted into sweaters. The hard part is trying to decide on a nice pattern that will compliment a particular yarn in my stash.

I love yarn too. I am retired and live on social security so it’s a real treat to be able to go and buy yarn when I have some money to spare. Most of the items I make have been donated to various causes. I have never tried Caron United yarn although I have used the Caron One Pound yarn for many projects. This would be a great chance for me to try something new and and for free which is the best kind of yarn.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE yarn! I love the feel of the different textures, the beauty of different colors, and even the scent of certain fibers (LOL). I would rather get yarn than any other gift for any holiday. I knit or crochet whenever I can (watching TV, waiting at the doctor’s, Skyping friends). I always have multiple projects going–usually a knit project, a crochet project, plus a smaller project to take in the car, and also a pattern in the design process. I never throw out scraps. I save them to use for little things like flowers or edgings. Even the little ends get put into a plastic bag to be used as stuffing. Yarn has been a literal lifesaver for me as I have battled cancer and illness. It has kept me sane and positive and given me something to look forward to each day.

I love yarn more than any other craft material… I adore making soft, warm caps for kids who are ill, for grandchildren and adult children. I love soft yarn for scarves for loved ones, sturdy yarn for household items, thin crochet thread for delicate snowflakes and doll clothing, and bamboo yarn for sleek projects. I had to downsize my living quarters this year, and of all the things I had to store at my daughter’s, I miss the other boxes of yarn more than any other item I have stored there — even my tiny Christmas tree! When I need specific yarn, it is like a treasure hunt with my grandchildren, going to their basement to rummage through my yarn boxes, then carefully packing it back up.

My yarn stash is starting to overflow the spare room closet, my closet, under the beds, the garage attic… and everywhere else I can find to hide my stash. Secretly I find myself hoping my husband will move out so my yarn can take over his closet, change to a twin bed (which will take up much less room), put up shelves with cubbies, enclose the deck…

Walking past all the yarns imagine all the stuff I could make. Overwhelmed with the thoughts of Birthday and Christmas gifts, if there was only enough time in the day to make everything I want to make. Pick out one or two projects, then the knitting high sets in, go home and start the project. All the stress falls away!

A whole bunch, that’s for sure.

Without yarn, I wouldn’t be the person I am today. I took up knitting as a newly married twenty something, and now more than two decades later, yarn/knitting has been a comfort, a distraction, a stimulant when I need to stay awake, a travel companion, and a true source of joy.

I’ve inherited my grandmother’s knitting needles and miscellaneous and I cherish them.

I told my younger son that the only time I’m a hoarder is when it comes to yarn and knitting needles!

How much do I love yarn? It has been at my side through difficult times and fun times. It has been my comfort and my pleasure. It gives me the pleasurable satisfaction that chocolate can give! It starts conversations and opens the doors to new friendships. It is probably the one inanimate object that can produce these sensations for me. I really love yarn!

I love yarn too much and of course I love the more expensive yarn. It’s very addictive to see a shawl or some other pattern and admire the yarn that was used to make it. Then go online and search for that yarn. I have found it very easy to order yarn online rather than driving to the other side of town to a LYS. I have my projects all organized now but have to stop ordering yarn till I finish what I have. 🙂

Yarn is my comfort. Some people turn to food, drink or drugs, I turn to yarn. It is my therapy.
If I were able to have the “perfect job” it would be to own a yarn store. To be able to be surrounded by all of that yarn, the different textures, colors, and all of the unlimited possiblities that yarn gives you. And to be able to share that with others would give me the greatest joy on earth. There are so many crafts that use yarn, crochet, knitting, needlepoint, hook rugs, macrama, and I’m sure there are many others that I haven’t been exposed to as yet. I want to learn, or at least experience all the possiblities yarn has to offer. Yarn is my best friend when I have no one to turn to, I can always sit down with some yarn and feel warmth, feel connected to something.

Wether it’s for crocheting & knitting, tying up that special package instead of using ribbon, crafting of any kind or just because you need string to tie something together. I currently have a 10 gallon bucket full of full skeins yet to be worked, as well as 3 baskets full of partial balls. And that’s not including what’s sitting on the couch being worked, and the yarn that’s hiding in my purse for who knows what reason! My love is also rubbing off in my one year old son. And that’s not counting all the yarn I already had in a laundry basket at my house. The problem is keeping my kitten from playing with the yarn while I am working on a project. Sometimes she gets a ball of yarn and carries it around the house. Also I am currently working on 3 different projects because I will start one and then have an idea for another so I constantly have multiple projects going.

My mom taught me to knit while I was in grade school. My first project were a pair of red slippers that I had to knit. I loved it so much that I gradually learned more until I was making my own sweaters. After graduating from college, I was in love with a granny square afghan my gram made for me. She couldn’t follow directions; but, showed me how to do a square. I collected books and by following them, I made my own granny square afghan which I still have. Since then, I have been enjoying both knitting and crocheting things to give away as gifts and projects for me and my family.

Yarn is the palette of fibers which we use to build the comforts in our lives. Each skein be it for its color , its thickness, or its degree of softness, determines the final garment. A garment for purpose….to comfort us. The journey of creating a garment is gazing at and feeling the ball of yarn to decide and discover just what it is calling to be.

Words cannot describe how much I love yarn. Yarn has saved me during a extremely challenging few years in our family. In a time where I have felt like I have no control of anything that’s happening in my life or to those I love, I have discovered an ability and love to create beautiful things with yarn and a crochet hook. Yarn has helped me to find happiness in my life again.

Yarn and crocheting has been my therapy for many years. I was first introduced to it in 1979, and have had a love affair with it ever since. When work and home get to be too much, I pull out the yarn basket and go to work. I would be utterly lost without my yarn and crochet hooks. They are the only reason I remain sane. Oh yes, I really love my yarn. it’s cheaper than a therapist.

As my kids would say, “All the way to the moon, and back down to the ground!” Yarn always makes me think of my grandmother, and her teaching me to crochet as a small boy. There’s something comforting about yarn. Compare snuggling up with a store-bought blanket as opposed to a handmade afghan. A store-bought baby sweater or jacket to one that was hand knitted or crocheted with love. There’s just something about the handmade items that relay more love and warmth. Think of the wonderful feelings you have when you’re at the yarn store and you can fondle all the different types of yarn. I know that, no matter the color, my thing is to feel the yarn, to see how soft or thick it is, and to imagine how it will be when it is worked into the project.

Believe it or not but I am so obsessed with yarn. I don’t know why. I have to have lots and lots of it or I start begging my husband for more haha. Everytime I see yarn I love, I almost tear up in happiness cause I know what I want to crochet with it immediately lol. I also have never really bought my own yarn. Maybe 5 times at most . I’ve bought it cause sometimes I can’t afford it. I’ve gotten so lucky many times especially lately. This lady I donated kids toys too and baby items for a newborn offered me as much of yarn I wanted cause I was so kind to give her my kids stuff. I literally cried haha what a baby. She gave me two huge plastic shelving of yarn. All kinds. Then a basket full. A whole bunch of needles. Many more things. Then years ago I was given a huge plastic zip up bag of knotted up yarn and a lot of old and new yarn. Still worked for me though. I just love yarn. I always have at least 4 to 5 projects I’m working on at the same time. I’m obsessed. I thank God everyday for giving me this one talent I can make stuff for people and for helping me have something help me from my stress from everyday life. I love yarn so much. First I get the joy of receiving it, then the pleasure of deciding what to do with it, then I get to make it into something and then I either get to wear what I made or give it as a gift. I have four granddaughters and have taught three of them to crochet two have also done some knitting. I try to get them yarn every chance I can they all like to do different things. The two older girls (10, 9) have tried both crochet and knitting and do pretty well. They also love yarn and get excited when ever I give them their yarn. The third is only 7 so she has only tried the crochet so far but wants to knit also. I have one more girl that is 4 and doesn’t understand why the other three can do it and she can’t so I have another yarn lover coming along.

I am addicted to yarn. I crochet for some charitable organizations. Each year I create at least 60 sets of hats and scarves for kids in a Head Start program, and also for kids in the district where my daughter teaches. It is a poor, rural area, and the school supports nearly 75 families each year at Christmas time.

I use the left over yarn to make what we have come to call my “bits and pieces afghans.” I coordinate the colors as best I can, and use the left over yarns to make zig zag pattern afghans, that then are distributed in a local halfway house.

I have a small room in my house that houses my yarns. There are shelves for the new skeins, and baskets to sort the leftover pieces by color. And their bags full of completed projects waiting to be distributed. Yarn surrounds me in all the rooms of my house, and my kids have learned not to let me near a yarn shop, or they will be stalled for long periods of time while I browse. I love the colors, the textures, the feel of it in my hands. I have crocheted for 55 years, and still haven’t had enough. I Love Yarn!

I love yarn and the art of crocheting because it brings back very fond memories of my mother and grandmother, both of which crocheted beautiful afghans that will be treasured forever. They have both passed away. It wasn’t until I got older that I understood why they loved crocheting so much. At 66 years old, I have been in love with yarn since Mom taught me to crochet a shawl for my doll when I was 7 years old. Mom is gone a long time, but my love for yarn has only increased over the years so much so that I have shared my love of yarn with so many others by crocheting or knitting gifts for family, friends and charities.

Good question! How MUCH do I love yarn? Well, if I didn’t have yarn, I would guess I’d find some substitute to knit & crochet with, but it wouldn’t be half as much fun: choosing the right weight/color/pattern, etc. I think, like most crafters, I have WAY more yarn than I need, but then I do a lot of charity work, so I usually justify my purchases, knowing that I will eventually use all of it.

When I travel, the first thing I do is scope out any yarn stores in the area. When I find a local yarn shop that I haven’t visited before, I always purchase at least one skein of yarn, usually sock yarn, so that I can support them. I, too, save the yarn scraps for the birds and have some hanging on my porch right now. I’ll add to it as the scraps accumulate. I have so much yarn that there is yarn put away in big lidded bins for future projects, but I’ll be darned if I can remember what project I bought it for!! I’m sure nobody else has that little problem! Always label your yarn with a project name! My favorite yarn store? Halcyon Yarn in Bath, Maine. I’ll travel all the way from Cincinnati, Ohio just to shop at Halcyon! What a great store!

I have to make 120 squares and I still have at least 70 to go. I make three or four at a time and then put it away again because something else caught my attention. I am almost done organizing my yarn. For this time. I have had yarn in big bags, Rubbermaid tubs (the 4 gallon ones), now in yarn organizers that hang in my closet. (That’s what closets are for, right?) The organizers hang from the rod and have six spaces down with pockets in the side for books and magazines. I got three and they are full, now, I also have a four drawer rolling cart for the baby yarn, novelty yarn and scraps. It’s full, too, and I still have to find a place for ribbon yarn, ribbon and thread cotton. About the time I find room for all that I have, I will see a sale at Michael’s or somewhere online. That’s the yarn. Now, I only need to find a place for all my knitting needles and crochet hooks. I don’t really knit much, but when I see them in thrift stores I can’t resist. I have five full sets of crochet hooks, including steel ones that I don’t really use. Bamboo, plastic, rosewood. My husband always said that I’m obsessed, I guess he was right. My stash grows and I have so many patterns and WIP, I think I should stop this and get back to it. Christmas is coming and I need to finish the wreaths I have started for Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. To say that I love yarn is an understatement. I LOVE YARN!!!!!!

My family doesn’t understand my love of yarn. I keep it in blue plastic storage bins so it’s not visible , and I don’t tell them what’s in the bins. They really love the things I knit them, but I guess they haven’t figured out where the yarn comes from. I’m a sucker for a yarn sale!

I have a large collection bin that those go in and I put them out in the grass right after we’ve mowed and make sure the keep the bird feeders full!!! Loving yarn too much
    Is my biggest sin!

    So fluffy in sweaters

I love yarn and you can tell that because my house is filled with the stuff; in every room but the kitchen and bath. I knit or crochet 10 to 16 hours a day every day. I started a nonprofit for children is where 95% of all my needle efforts go. I am also teaching children and adults in my small town to also love yarn but teaching class and giving them the love of yarn for life. I am always searching for new books, new patterns and also do a lot of designing on my own. My entire life revolves around my love of yarn. I love yarn so much that I have an closet that is filled with containers of yarn. I love to feel the different textures and work it up to see how it turns out. I do the majority of my crocheting and knitting for charity projects, so I use every scrap of yarn and always want more. My kids will not go into craft stores or yarn stores with me because they know that I will have to look at each different yarn and feel the difference.

I’m unable to describe how much I love yarn! I learned to spin yarn from wool, but I still buy yarn. I mourn the closing of the local yarn store and always detour to the yarn aisles when visiting the chain craft stores. When I transferred overseas I took enough yarn for 24 scarves, I came home with almost 10 times the yarn and wove 30+ scarves in 18 months.

Yarn becomes fun when you start making a very odd new shape you haven’t tried before and you see it come alive between your needles. Comfort comes like a old shoe. You may be alone and lonely, lost something dear or just depressed, grab a ball of yarn and soon you are in another world leaving your problems behind.

One of my friends gives me a skein of yarn as a gift every so often just because she saw something she thought was pretty and I’d love it. People give me yarn they’ve “inherited” since they know I love it and will make good use of it. I have the only 12 year old son and 15 year old son I know of who can tell you what Quiviet is, and know the difference between a sock weight yarn and a worsted weight and why someone might want 00000 double pointed needles.

I love yarn. Every type, color, length, and texture. I have wools that are so scratchy I can’t imagine what I would do with them, and I have silks that are so soft that I don’t want to part with them! I have bought yarn in colors that I detest, and that others can’t imagine being used, and I keep it and love it. Scrap yarn is incorporated into everything. I have made bath sponges and used the tiny clippings as the filler. My love borders on hording, but I still say that a yarn horde is better than a horde horde!

How much do I love yarn? When we downsized from a 2 story 4 bedroom house, my stash was located and put into one place. We were moving to a two bedroom, no basement and only one closet…you should have seen the tears when I had to yard sale my yarn. I came home in the morning, after working a night shift…and had to take a sleeping pill. It is sooo hard now not to use coupons or find yarn sales….I MUST NOT buy more than the project on the needles…..I MUST NOT buy more than the project on the needles…..I MUST NOT buy more than the project on the needles!

I have loved yarn’s and working with them since I was a little girl. My Mom taught me to knit when I was about 10. I didn’t like doing it because it took too long. So I taught myself to crochet. For many many years that’s what I did. Then about 25 yr. ago my fingers wouldn’t let me crochet any more. So I thought I would try to knit again. My fingers didn’t hurt doing that. So I took up knitting once more.. I made premie hats for hospitals first. Then I started having grandchildren so I was making hats for them. Then the church I belonged to ask me to start making them for the church bazaar. Now I love to go to find all the new and different colors and styles of yarn to make all kinds of things. It is a great hobby and a calming thing for my soul.

It’s not the yarn itself that i love. I make hats, scarves, boots, etc and donate them to cancer patients of all ages. Young and old. I take bags of it with me when I go to Stephenson Cancer Center for my own cancer treatment. I give it to the nurses who in turn give it to the patients. So what do i love? I love the fact that a simple piece of yarn and a hook has made so much of a difference in so many lives. Not just the other cancer patients, but i a time when I am going thru so much, it calms me, keeps me sane, and gives me a reason to keep going each day.
