Cleaning Out the Closet: Red Heart Yarn Giveaway

December 30, 2013 by AllFreeKnitting 1,925 Comments

It’s a well known fact that strange things can lurk in a closet, long forgotten until you accidentally uncover that childhood rock collection when you’re digging around looking for a spare towel.  Our prize closet isn’t immune to the eccentric rules of time and space that govern closets–a fact that was driven home  when, while searching for a box of ornaments, I discovered a collection of the Red Heart 2012-2013 yarn line.  I couldn’t resist the temptation to share this magnificent discovery with our readers, and immediately resolved to giveaway the entire collection.

Red Heart Yarn Giveaway

This is a giveaway honoring the close of 2013 and ushering in 2014.  You may not be ready to get your own yarn organized just yet, but here at AllFreeKnitting, we do our best to stay ahead of the curve (which is precisely why I was digging around in a closet).  When I stumbled on a whole collection of Red Heart yarn, I knew giving it away would be a great way to celebrate the new year with our readers.  Let’s be honest, winning a stash of yarn is a great way for any knitter to start the new year.

What exactly does this magnificent prize contain?  You’ll get a Red Heart tote, two packs of knitting needles, stitch markers, a yarn cutter, a chain stitch counter, and eight skeins of Red Heart yarn.  That’s a whole lot of prize to go around.  There are tons of things you can make with these beautiful yarns, so don’t miss your chance to win this fabulous prize.

Four Red Heart Patterns

Wondering what you could do with all that prize yarn?  Here are four great patterns from Red Heart Yarn to get you thinking.

Pattern-Collage250Lace Stripes Scarf – An easy elegant scarf, this is a great project for those new to lace.

Sashay Awhile Scarf – If you love ruffles, this is the pattern for you.

Lovely Lace Scarf– Step up your lace game with this flattering scarf pattern.

Out of this World Cowl – Stay warm with this basic cowl pattern.

I have my yarn in bins. I have the needles in a basket with their corresponding mate.
The circular needles are the hard one they are in a basket as well. I just haven’t gotten them as organized. I have projects in totes. (I think I am working on 4 at the moment).

I like to keep several projects going at once…..Different days I take on easier or projects that need more attention. I have tons of yarn….and try to use up my leftovers to make multi-colored hats…etc…..Most charities in my area are happy to get donations from me and all of the lovely ladies – Chicks with Sticks – that our group has to donate for those in need.

This is fun ! Baskets and totes and bins .. oh my. I put special yarns in Large Glass Pantry Storage Jars to enjoy visually while deciding on a project. I keep my yarn stash in plastic bags which I put in Wicker Laundry Baskets covered with a decorative cloth. These don’t stack of course and need to be placed on a rolling wire shelf unit but look great. The straight needles are stored in decorative wine bottle gift containers and the circulars are neatly stored and organized in a three ring zip-binder filled with sheet protectors. I’m planning on making a little roll-up case for my crochet hooks. WIP in totes .. the usual. Happy New Year All !

I store my stash in bins, my knitting needles in roll up needle cases and WIPs in tote bags. I have one large quilted tote with several pockets sewn into the inside that I use to take my project to “social knit groups”. It has a pocket on the outside that holds my patterns instructions.

Here’s the breakdown – beautiful glass jars for straight needles. A basket for dpn’s and circulars. The closet holds the yarn that is kept in flexible, see-through bags, and many totes and baskets that hold individual projects. All books, magazines, and individual patterns are organized on the bookshelves. I also have a fun turquoise kitchen cart that holds accessories, scissors, and any misc. things I need for the current projects I’m working on. (Cart is from IKEA)

I use to knit when I was a little girl, but when I learned how to crochet, knitting went away. I put some of my yarns into travel tote bags, I put some of them into my practice grocery shopping cart, and some goes in practice bags. I use a laundry bin to hold my ball of yard in while I am crocheting. I keep all my yarns together in one room so I can get to it right away. I keep all my needles in a zip lock bag. All my books are on the shelves when there not being used.

What a fantastic opportunity to create something new in January! My knitting organization tips are to keep your projects in their own bags – use a tote big enough to hold all the materials and zip lock bags work great to keep yarn clean and small parts from getting lost.

i have a different bag for each project, I have a note book where I state start date, pattern link, yarn type, shade and serial numbers if possible, needle/hook size. I make comments as I go along. When project is complete, I enter the date and weigh the project to see how many grams it took. Then if I want to make it again all notes are there as a guide, Also I’m able to put all this information into a blog post as a guideline for others. As for organising a stash the secret is don’t let it build up into unmanageable quantities, like I have, Take part in the Stash-busting for Stashahoics Challenge for lots of inspiration and tips.:)

I keep all of my yarns in bins. I have a basket for my knitting needles and keep each pair of straight needles together with a rubber band. My crochet hooks are kept in a “pocket book” that I crocheted many moons ago. My circular needles remain in the package in which they were bought and the odds and ends (like row counters, stitch markers, darning needles) are kept in baggies and are stored in the basket.

I have yarn in totes by type…worsted, bulky, etc. This way, when I find a pattern I like I look in my stash to see what colors I have before I go to the store or on ebay. I went to Michaels and bought pretty little storage boxes for my circular and DP needles, but I mostly use Denise circulars for everything, but sometimes I have a project on my size 7 needles and need another 7 for something else, so I have lots of extras. My stash takes up a whole room in my house!

My kids have started knitting, so I should probably have another tote for the yarn that I don’t want them to use.

I have my different projects in clear zipper bags. Plus, for me my biggest thing for me is that I attach my smaller scissors (that are in a pencil case)to my knitting bag. I was always looking for the scissors, markers, needles and smaller necessities to get the project done….so now getting to the end of my rope is a good thing.

I’ve been involved in all kinds of crafts in recent years – counted cross-stitch, needlepoint, cake decorating, painting, etc. However, even though I crocheted as a young girl, and have intentions to take it up again; and would be interested in learning how to knit – I haven’t gotten involved in either one yet! If I were to win this yarn, I think it would be the motivating factor I need to get started! I know there are lots of blogs, Pinterest, etc. where you can find directions.

Some yarn is stored in big plastic bins, other yarn, like sock yarn, cotton yarn, is stored in a tall chest-of-drawers… hahaha, I have a sock yarn drawer! All WIPs were enclosed in large ziplock bags with instructions, materials and tools. Grab-n-Go! When making afghans, however, I place pieces in reusable grocery bags. There is already a storage chest in it that I’m hoping to convert to yarn storage. Keep patterns in a large binder, each in a plastic cover. I copy patterns as I want to use them and keep them in a smaller binder, then pull them out to mark as I use them. I keep a lot of my patterns in large binders in clear plastic sheets so they don’t get messed up. and the books are in totes as well and labeled

I take the time to copy the pattern out of the book and place the sheets in page savers along with a post-it pad with the supplies in the tote… that way there is something to make a note on or use one post-it to press on the pattern to show where you left off… also keeps the books available to start and WIP! ….lol

All yarn is organized by color, then weight. Some new yarn would be wonderful since I haven’t bought any since April 2013!

Needles in a pretty vintage needle holder, except my interchangeable needles, which have their own container, and use almost exclusively now. Working projects are in various totes, baskets, bags, and spilling out everywhere! That is part of my New Years resolution! Finish and ORGANIZE!!

my yarn is in bins, first is by fiber type then by weight and color, so one bin is all wool and mostly sock yarns with neat stacks by color. once yarn is designated to a project it goes in a 2 gallon ziplock with the pattern in another bin. this helps me keep my WIPS sorted.

Does anyone know of a bag that knitting needles (and scissors) do not go through? I keep yarn/needles not in use in plastic storage drawers. I keep current projects in cloth bins to keep projects separated and make it easy to move for quick clean ups. The problems is making knitting transportable because I like to knit on drives, vacations, etc. I’m old enough to remember when the bag was part of the shopping experience. That’s what I started using but now only book stores have bags sturdy enough to survive more than one outing but they are still prone to holes. I bought eco friendly bags but they got holes just as easily and they really weren’t big enough for most projects. I’ve been on the lookout for a while now.

I have my wool in bins (all over the house). My needles are thrown into a container as well. I try to get organized by putting the same weight of wool together and vow to only keep the wool out that I am using for my current project. That lasts for about a day! Then I find another pattern on your website and can’t wait to start it. I usually have 2-3 projects on the go at the same time.

I use a small notions bag – like a make-up bag, which tend to be strong enough – for my little stuff – fix-it crochet hook, hanging round pendant cutter (by Clover), scissors, emory board (nail file), a few stitch markers and needle protectors – – – this little bag moves quickly from bag to bag depending on what I’m knitting (or taking along). Bigger supply of notions is in small marked white plastic (forgive me – butt-wipe) containers in my lidded footstool at my chair.

Needles are stored in their original coverings in a set of plastic drawers ( which also hold crochet hooks, fabric, and stitching projects ). I have a “main” tote that holds needles (circulars sorted in a check file), notions, notebook, and a few patterns – I just add yarn and go when I travel. My sock bag, a small tote that hangs from my wrist, doubles for hats, wrist warmers, and other small projects. It is handy for waiting in line, waiting at appointments, or just walking around.

I have yarn totes, labeled and numbered. I created a spreadsheet that has all of my yarn listed, color, type, weight, how many skeins, did I buy it for a project?, and what bin it’s located in. So if I find a pattern I like, I can do a quick sort to see if I have yarn in my stash that will work. For projects I keep each one in a different bucket, basket or bag. When I want to work on one, I grab the bag and I’m ready to go!

I find that trying (?) to keep projects together in totes, is the best way to organize. That method doesn’t always work, but I keep my supplies in a small bin, needles, markers, scissors and then when gathering project needs they are in one place and can be added to the tote bag. I also, use plastic hairpins, to pin my garments together. You can purchase these at a beauty supply store (less expensive, than the pins in the notions department). As for circular needles, I kind of gave up and purchase the combo kit. Love it and all the circular needles and in one place and you can make any size you need as well as making straight needles. Think about a second splurge, to purchase the bamboo set trying to talk myself into the needles and not yarn. The bags you get with different linens and lingerie (heavy with zippers) are super great and much studier than plastic bags.

We have to be organized?? Well, I’m a spontaneous knitter and flit from one project to another, whatever suits my fancy. I’ll either grab a ball of yarn that I keep in totes in the spare bedroom or buy yarn at my LYS if I see a pattern I like. My WIP, needles, and notions are kept in my awesome vintage barkcloth yarn caddy near my sofa in the living room. Happy New Year, everyone!

Big plastic bins into which are sorted: odds and ends from previous projects in Ziploc bags, yarn that is enough for a bigger project (usually more leftovers), and the mysterious things that have been given to me without any identifying information. Digging through leads to inspiration.

If I have a specific project, I store it in a ziplock bag with the pattern sheet. This way I can have everything in one spot. All my needles are kept in separate bags (circular and double points in a separate bag than my straight needles). My yarn stash is kept in the large handled ziplock bags and stored in the top of my closet (out of my husband’s sight!) 🙂 hee hee

It is separated by project for the most part (eg. one giant bag full of yarn for baby things, another with yarn for a specific sweater). The best organizer I got recently is plastic needle holders that fit in a 3-ring binder. I have all of my circular AND double-pointed needles in the same place. It’s great!!

I keep my yarn in clear plastic bins, and many of my needles in needle cases. I put each of my circular needles in zip lock bags labeled with needle size and length. Each project has its own bag. Now, finishing some of those started projects is another story……..

I keep projects together in a bag with all the “stuff” I need for the project. As for the stach of yarn, it is in totes but in no particular order. One the first things to do 2014 is to clean and sort out .my stach of yarn. I have limited space. I will be reading everyone’s answer and see if I can find better way to store my yarn.

And then I label each WIP with a safety pin and corresponding letter bead for the hook used so I can pick up even a year later and know what hook I was using.

My yarn stash has to be in clear under the bed containers. Each container is marked according to the type of yarn and thickness. Knitting needles are all in the corner of one of the yarn containers. The needles are in the closest container at the foot of the bed for easy access. I can’t see having it any other way because when you are looking for a certain yarn or hook, everything is right in front of you.

You have brains in your head.
    and knitting needles to use.
    You can pick any pattern,
    Any color you choose.
You’ve got yarn all your own. And
    you know what you know.
And YOU are the gal who’ll
decide where the knit gifts are to go.

    Your yarn’ll get mixed up,
Of course, as you already know.
    It’ll get mixed up with
Knots and other colors as you go.
So be sure when you stop.
    To place work with care
    And remember that
Knitting’s A Great Way to Share.

    And will you succeed?
    Yes! You will, indeed!

Sock needles are stored in a roll-up bag by size, crochet hook are in a case, and larger crochet hooks, and other items are stored in clear plastic shoe boxes.

I have two dressers dedicated solely to yarn, plus two large Rubbermaid storage containers and a couple of laundry hampers to take the occasional overflow. In them, the yarn is separated by project and/or yarn type in plastic zip-top bags. This is long-term, (hopefully) mothproof storage. Ongoing projects and WIPS are stored in those re-usable almost-fabric shopping bags you get from stores, banks, etc. That way they can go with me when I leave the house, and I only have to toss my accessory-bag in to make it a take-along project without thinking about it too hard ahead of time.

Most of my ready to use yarn is in bins under my bed. Projects along with their yarn are in totes. Crochet hooks are in a plastic pencil box. I have found the plastic pencil box works for the dpn’s and the circular needles. Haven’t figured anything for the long straight knitting needles, pencil boxes aren’t long enough. To keep each individual project mess free I made bags out off old parachute pants, the material is slick so yarn tumbles easily.

Well I didn’t start organizing until this year. I placed my yarn in clear bags (comforter bags I had left over) in solids and multi colors. Each brand and group has its own bag. I then placed my needles and other supplies in a stacked organizer along with patterns I printed out to go with the projects I have completed. However the best tip I have is Each project I work on and get bored with goes in a box or bag with all the supplies that I need to finish the project, (and if the pattern can not fit; I tag the box with the information of where you can find the pattern and where I stopped at). I try and print the pattern but if in a book that doesn’t work. I try and finish all projects but when they are bigger and I need other things done I have to place them somewhere.

I have my stash hanging in my craft room. I used heavy-duty hangers with 2 1/2 gal. zip lock bags and Duck tape. I have one section for specialty yarns, one for projects in progress, one for future projects, and others to hold notions and needles. At a glance I can see what I have!!! Plus, they hang from the ceiling so I have more room on my shelves for books.

Don’t sick your needles into your skein when you’re taking a break or working on another project, it can split and tangle the fibers. Instead run your extra needle(s) through your work and use point protectorsif you need to.

Hooks were stored in home made roll cases and the needles in a tall plastic canister left from some popcorn treat. Most patterns were stored on computer and in notebooks. I love all the ideas for organizing. I have a closet with cubby hole shelf and also I use hanging sweater shelves. I still overflow all the yarn as I work on project after project. Maybe next year I will re-organize again!

I keep all my yarn in the hall closet organized by color and my needles, etc. in my old college backpack for easy travel. My work in progress stays on the shelf below my yarn storage shelf and I keep a list of projects to do tapes to the shelf and mark them off as I go.

I keep my yarn in clear plastic bins with lids. I try and organize it by type of yarn and dark or light color. I keep my crochet hooks and knitting needles in a zippered pouch.
Small projects are kept in a Ziplock baggie. Other larger projects are in totes.

Have you seen those fancy yarn holders that cost about $12? Make your own with plastic 1/2 gallon container. Drill a hole in the top, and put in a little rubber gasket to make a smooth feed for your yarns. Total cost: Under $5. In a house with 5 cats, I couldn’t use yarn without it.

I converted an extra bedroom to a hobby room. I use tall bookcases to store my yarn, sorted by color. I can see at a glance what color yarn I have and how many skeins. When I have a knitting project, I pull the yarn I need from the shelves and keep it in a tote bag along with the pattern and needles.

sigh! nothing fancy, just totes for the yarn, sorted by weight and a large plastic tool box to hold the needles, stitch holders, extra buttons etc. Those nesting totes are awesome as they stack nicely in a closet…just label so you know which one to pull out!

I have a set of nested hat boxes, so there is a size for most projects. Plus you know you can’t have just one going, so the 5 boxes keep the yarn etc together for each of the projects. We won’t discuss the other projects in other places….

I have my knitting needles and crochet hooks in a home made holder, with a simple fold at top and bottom, and elastic to hold needles in, it roles up, and you tie it, works really well, I have organized my knitting and crocheting items in a carts that is on wheels with drawers, everything has it place. Extra yarn is kept in plastic tote bags.

Since I’m always carrying a project with me, it’s almost impossible to keep completely organized. The one thing I always keep in order is my yarn stash. I keep all my acrylic yarn in one bin, the mohair blends together, angora blends, etc. I keep all my hooks in a pencil cup. However I have not found a way to keep from losing scissors, stitch markers and other small accessories.

My stash is organized in clear totes by weight and by color. All bins are labeled. Patterns are organized in hanging file folders, books in a bookcase. Knitting needles are in a tote bag, crochet hooks in another bag. Finished projects are in large clear bins and works in progress are in baskets to take to my favorite chair to work on. I usually have an easy project and a more difficult project to work on or a small project and a big project. Now that I’m retired, I’m actually enjoying using my stash!
