There’s Still Time! Crochet Baby Hats Charity + Giveaway

February 25, 2013 by AllFreeCrochet 30 Comments

200X200On February 11, 2013 AllFreeCrochet had a “tiny” announcement. They are hosting a charity drive with the help of Bernat. Anyone that wants to participate, can! All you need to do is knit or crochet a newborn hat for the Labor and Delivery unit at Northwest Community Hospital and automatically you’ll be entered to win a prize.

Crocheting and knitting is a great way to put your talent to use, especially when it’s going to someone in need. Every year there are over 3,000 babies born at NCH and each baby goes home with a handmade crochet baby hat or knit hat. This is a great way to keep baby nice and warm during their first adventure home.

What is the prize you ask?

charity-hat-giveaway13 skeins of yarn!

*Bernat Baby Blanket:

  • 2 Balls Baby Green 03230
  • 3 Balls White 03005
  • 2 Balls Baby Yellow 03615

*Sheep(ish) by Vickie Howell:

  • 3 Balls Taupe(ish) 00011
  • 2 Balls White(ish) 00004
  • 1 ball Turquoise(ish) 00017

When making your baby hat please follow these specifications:

  • 3-ply baby yarn MUST be used
  • A size G hook MUST be used (if crocheting a hat)
  • Size 6 or 7 knitting needles MUST be used (if knitting a hat)
  • You can use any colors you wish, but NO yellow please. Yellow gives the appearance of jaundice.
  • Make your hat simple and fit for a newborn. Bows or poms can be included if you wish.
  • Hats must come from a smoke free home.
  • Optional Knit Pattern
  • Optional Crochet Pattern
  • Baby Hat Patterns on AllFreeCrochet

To date we have: over 700 donated hats!

To donate your hats just send them to the address provided:

Prime Publishing
AllFreeCrochet Baby Hat Drive
3400 Dundee Rd #220
Northbrook, IL 60062

If you are kind enough to participate then please read the specifications (or see above) for the baby hats. **It seems that some are not using baby yarn and the hats are very rough. It is VERY important that you use the softest baby yarn** This charity drive goes until March 11, 2013. March 11 is the LAST DAY to make a hat, so we will allow one week for you to ship them to us after that date.  Grab your hook and let’s go!

What colors are you planning on working with?

i knitted a hat in baby green camo last week. It is light green with flecks of dark green, brown, and black in it. I will get it in the mail this week. I had made my great nephew a baby blanket with this same yarn and his mother uses it all the time.

I am moving out of town and I have a few newborn beanies that I have crocheted – I used Caron Simply soft, Lion Brand Homespun and Loops and Threads Charisma – all extremely soft and all very dense and warm (and the right size 😉 ). Would it be ok to donate those even if not for the contest entry? If not I will give them to my local childrens hospital before I move. Please let me know. Thank you!

Just mailed the 12 hats I was able to complete. I already posted earlier that I would try to send 1 or 2 but 12 easily flowed from my crochet hook during the winteer snow storms. Thank you for the great drive that I will always remember helped me with therapy to pass the love forward. In loving memory of Landon. Our little angel that received a sweet little homemade hat when he was with us for such a short time.

I had some leftover white baby yarn from an afghan I made for a friend’s baby. I was able to crochet two hats from it, and sent them to you via Priority mail this morning. Thanks for letting us help out!

I make all of my hats on a loom, you gave instructions for crochet and knit, as far as I know the loom is called loom knitting. Can hats made on a loom be entered in your contest? I have made over 100 for local KS. hospitals, both preemie and newborns. I also made some hats for the Hats 4 the Homeless in OK. some time back, plus a few scarves. I enjoy helping others and babies are precious in God’s eyes and in mine.

I didn’t see the article before last week. I am sending 7 hats today. All are made of Bernat yarns– “Softee Baby” and “Baby Coordinates”– I love how soft these yarns are!

I missed this ad somehow. Today is March 10th. I will make as many hats as I can before the deadline. My (now 15 yr. old) son was a preemie so this project is dear to my heart. Pink, green, yellow hats on the way.

Question, I have some soft baby hats, is it too late to send them in, if so can you give me the address for another charity that can use them. Thank you Marianne.
