Guest Post Written By Phyllis Serbes of Many Creative Gifts
For my second project with the remaining 3 skeins of Lion Brand Cotton Ease in Berry, I wanted to make a special gift for a baby girl — a project that would be fun, challenging but not too hard, and a good standby for upcoming showers and celebrations. So, I came up with the Baby Hoodie Sack because it works up quite fast but looks elaborate and isn’t boring to work on! If you missed my first project, the Radiance Lap Throw, then be sure you check it out!
A few things to keep in mind while making the Sack:
1) Leave a long tail when starting – the first row will actually be the top of the hoodie, so you’ll use the tail to sew or crochet the hoodie part together.
2) Try to crochet loosely on this project, especially the center panel, which will tend to pull in and away from the sides because of the cabling.
3) This project is very forgiving in gauge and sizing. I patterned it for a newborn baby about 19 – 20 inches long, so I made it 36”/92 cms long (and it’s 14”/35.5 cms wide) because, when you reach that length, your final row is going to be the front edge of the sack. Don’t fasten off so that you can crochet or sew down the side of the sack without having to reattach the yarn (or you might want to consider buttons and loops or zippers up each side to make it easier to get baby in and out). You are going to fold up the front side about 13 1/2” and sew up the sides, leaving about 9” for the hoodie part.

The pattern is created by repeating (Row 5, Row 2, Row 5, Row 2, Row 7, Row 2) for the desired length. I had 20 crossovers (Row 7) in my 36” length, ending after the second Row 5.
