Guest Post: Crochet Baskets for Spring by Mama in a Stitch!

March 1, 2016 by Stitch&Unwind 3 Comments

Hi, this is Jessica from Mama In A Stitch blog and today I want to share with you a couple of crocheted baskets! Between spring cleaning and Easter, baskets are a “must have” in my house. I’ve crocheted some baskets in the past, but I wanted to make these light and bright for a fresh “spring” look. These baskets work will for a few things, but I really love to keep them in the bathroom to throw my rings and other jewelry into. Sometimes I keep cotton balls in the larger basket and cotton swabs in the small one. These would be an awesome alternative for a teen’s Easter basket! The baskets are not super stiff, so they are easy to fold down in case you ever just want to store them away.

Crochet Baskets for Spring

You will need:

Size J 6.0 Crochet Hook

Super Bulky Yarn – I used Lion Brand Hometown USA in Houston Cream (white) and Phoenix Azalea (pink)

Scissors

Tapestry Needle to weave in ends

Notes:

You should be comfortable with single crochet, sc in front loop only, crocheting in the round and basic color changes. If you’ve got those skills down, you are good to go with these baskets! Large basket measures approximately 5” wide (diameter), 3” tall. Small basket is approximately 3.5” wide and 2” tall.

Starting to create the base of the basket, crocheting in the round

Making continuous rounds

This is an example of what it looks like to crochet in the front loop only. See how the hook goes only through the front loop? This is how you will begin the sides.

Pattern:

Large Basket

With your size J crochet hook and white yarn, chain 3

Round 1 Sc 6 into second chain from hook (place a stitch marker to mark the end of your round if you prefer – work in continuous rounds. No need to slip stitch to join)

Round 2 Sc 2 into each stitch around (12 stitches total)

Round 3 *Sc 2, sc 1* Repeat from * to * around (18 stitches total)

Round 4 *Sc 2, sc 1, sc1* Repeat around (24 stitches total)

Round 5 * Sc 2, sc 1, sc1, sc1* Repeat around (30 stitches)

Round 6 * Sc 2, sc 1, sc1, sc1, sc1* Repeat around (36 stitches)

Round 7 *Sc 2, sc 1, sc1, sc1, sc1, sc1* Repeat around (42 stitches)

Slip stitch in next stitch to join

Sides of Basket

Round 1 With same yarn, sc in front loop only around

Round 2 – until basket reaches 1.5 inches tall – work single crochet in continuous rounds

Next Round (Once basket is 1.5 inches tall) -Change color to pink – Sc in 1st stitch, *chain 1, skip stitch, sc in next stitch* (In other words, make a single crochet, then chain one, skip a stitch below and single crochet into the next stitch – repeat this around)

Next Round – Change color back to white, sc 2 times into each CHAIN stitch around ( you are only working into the chain stitches below and single crocheting 2 times into each chain. Skip the single crochet stitches and ONLY work into the chain stitches)

Next Round and until basket reaches “ 2 ¾ “ inches tall TOTAL – single crochet in continuous rounds

Once entire basket measures approximately 2 ¾ “ to 3” tall, skip stitch, slip stitch to join, tie off and weave in all ends.

Small Basket

With your size J crochet hook, chain 3

Round 1 Sc 6 times into second chain from hook (mark your rounds if needed)

Round 3 Sc 2 times into each sc around (12 stitches)

Round 4 *Sc 2 times into 1st sc, sc into next sc* Repeat around (18 stitches)

Round 5 *Sc 2 times into 1st sc, sc, sc* Repeat around (24 stitches)

Round 6 *Sc 2 times into 1st sc, sc, sc, sc* Repeat around (30 stitches)

Round 7 Sc around

Round 8 – until basket reaches 1 3/4 inches – 2” tall, sc in continuous rounds ( no need to slip stitch to join)

Final Round – Change color to pink, sc around, slip stitch to join, tie off and weave in ends.

Happy spring to you and yours, and I hope you enjoy the baskets!

How are you preparing for spring?

What a wonderful pattern. Even a novice crocheter should be able to make this. Just using different colors can make the same item look very different. I think they would look good almost anywhere. On my window sill, toilet tank, baby’s dresser, my night stand, the possibilities are as they say, endless. Thank you so much for sharing!
