I was 7 years old,and was taught by my Mom and Gramma.
The first project was a granny square throw, and as I feel in Love with the craft I started making doily’s from thread.I never stopped ,I noticed in the past 2 years how these crafts have come back in full swing.

I was 12. My friend that I sat with on the school bus every day taught me as we rode the 9 miles to and from school each day. I made 2 hats that school year.

I was in my 30s when I taught myself to crochet. I had taught myself how to knit at age 21 when my first child was born, but when knitting cramped my hands I started crocheting.

I was 22 when I learned to crochet. We were volunteers at an orphanage in Haiti that year and one of the teen orphans taught me. She had only learned the year before from a lady that came to visit there. That girl won first place for her blanket at an international school competition that summer! We were so proud of her. We went back to visit when I was 27 and expecting our first baby and she gave us the winning blanket as a gift for our unborn son. We will always cherish that blanket!

I think 36. Someone taught my daughter how to hold the yarn and do the chains. She taught me. Then, I learned more online through youtube.com. Still learning. I would really love to take a class! To date I have made hats, Scarves, and various blankets.

I am 27 and I started to teach myself to crochet about 6 months ago through DIY videos on the web. I always thought I would never be able to do it, it looked so complicated, but I have successfully made a bunch of hats, scarves, and a few blankets. I am currently working on a shell baby blanket. Thanks to this site for giving me tons of ideas.

I started to “learn” when I was about 6 but did not get serious until I was 10 and then learned all the basic stitches and started making doilies…I am now almost 68 so I have been crocheting now for 58 years. And knitting for about 15 years.

My great Aunt taught me when I was about ten and I’ve crocheted on and off since for 50 years. I’ve made granny square rugs, doileys and I taught my daughter to crochet when she was about 9 or 10… she made an outfit for her teddy bear then… not sure that she does much now but we are both still into crafts of all sorts.

Crochet has truly been a god-send for me since an illness left me unable to return to work OR read (my former favorite way to pass the time) for more than a few minutes at a time. I started this year right before I turned 60. The area senior center was offering a beginner’s class and then I discovered that youtube is loaded with tutorials! Not only have I picked up a fun and useful craft, I had the pleasure of meeting an interesting and diverse community of ladies, some of whom I continue to meet with weekly.

I was about 7 or 8. I think Mom taught me how to chain, and that’s all I remember until I was in college. Mom gave me an afghan pattern and showed me how to do the stitches — I spent a LOOOONG time making that blanket for my boyfriend for his birthday. It was lumpy, but warm, and it’s held up to nearly 20 years of marriage and 9 children. A lot has changed in that time, including my crochet skills. One of our boys really likes crocheting — he’s sort of a crochet sculptor, doesn’t use patterns, just intuitively feels his way through inventing projects.

I was about 4 or 5 when my mother taught me how to crochet. We were at my grandmother’s house. All the women in my mother’s family — my grandma, aunts, cousins would sit in the living room crocheting doilies for an hour or two every day. I wanted to join them so my mom got me my own crochet needle and some thread and showed me how to make a simple doily.

I was 3 years old when my grandmother taught me how to crochet. At first my wrist was not strong enough to hook the needle through, so I had to use my left hand to hook the yarn over the crochet hook!

My mother and my grandmother taught me….starting before age 7, but being an active child…my interest was intermittent….so that sewing was my higher priority. Over time, I did manage to develop more patience and I have made mountains of afghans, hats, scarves and….even more doilies. I’m now 65 and I am still doing and learning both crochet and knitting…as I meet my challenges with a finished project …which is often now a design that I have created myself, not another’s pattern. Creativity and self-reliance are what we develop when we crochet & knit….and it is so very reassuring to see both of these skills returning to the hands of our children. *S*

I think that I was 15 years old when I started to learn about crocheting and making blankets. I am by no means in anyway tired of crocheting.

I am so thankful my grandmother took the time and had the patience to teach all her gradaughters to crochet and knit. I was 8 years old when she taught me the basics. To this day I don’t hold the crochet hook correctly but I can put out some mighty fine looking finished hats, lapghans, blankets and sweaters.
    Thank You, Gramma Doris
Now I plan on teaching my
granddaughter who is 10 so the tradition continues.
