Prior to entering the world of crochet, I really didn’t see the appeal of granny squares. I thought they were just funky squares of crocheted yarn from the 70’s. They brought to mind cheap acrylic yarn and dull brown, orange, and gold colors. But now that I look at crochet on a daily basis, I’ve discovered how amazing these little squares (or grannies as I like to call them) can be!
There are so many different ways you crochet a square. And contrary to my previous knowledge, there are hundreds of ways to incorporate them into projects. Granny squares are holding strong in the crochet circle. Not only are they patched together for awesome blankets, but you make some really cute accessories!
To my surprise, there truly is a world out there of granny square goodness. Check out some of these fun patterns that use crocheted squares to create fun and beautiful designs.

I too was amazed at the versatility of squares. Afghans made from squares go from country to urban sophistication. The picture you have here of the couple in the granny square vests reminds me of high school when many of the girls (not boys) wore them.
