IMG_6615In February, we asked our loyal readers to help us bring a little love and warmth to children in need.  We teamed up with Warm Up America! and Build-a-Bed for an exciting charity drive, asking you to donate crocheted or knit afghans. The afghans will go to children who didn’t have warm beds to sleep in.  The folks a Build-a-Bed construct bedframes for the kids and provide them with a mattress, pillow, sheets, a small stuffed animal.  They just needed us to help make warm blankets to top it all off.  And you just won’t believe the response we got!

For weeks, we got excited comments and Facebook posts showing us your progress.  We loved every comment/post from our fans and started to get excited right along with you.  Then the boxes started showing up.  So many boxes! We had afghans stacked EVERYWHERE.  They took over our desks and our conference room.

Here’s a breakdown of what we received:

a total of 134 afghans from 33 states and 2 countries
347lbs of yarn
13 pastel colored afghans
14 granny square afghans
43 striped afghans
20 knit afghans
21 solid colored afghans
13 ripple afghans
11 afghans made with Bernat Bulky yarn

Two of the most popular afghan patterns we received were the following two patterns, but we just know the kids are going to love snuggling up with all of these fabulous handmade crochet and knit afghans.

For the crocheters: a free crochet afghan pattern:

Red Bricks Crochet Afghan Pattern

The amazing textures and unique geometry of this Red Bricks Crochet Afghan are sure to make a strong statement. The stitch pattern is easy to memorize and you’ll love snuggling under this stunning crochet afghan pattern as you work it up.

For the knitters: A free knit afghan pattern:

bernat-blanket-k-cushygarterblanket

This fantastic knit afghan is worked up with a simple garter stitch pattern and a subtle neutral shade of a bulky weight yarn, such as Bernat Blanket.  These factors alone make this knit afghan pattern an easy, elegant project that’s a cinch to work up while watching TV or snuggling on the couch.

{SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT!}

As promised, everyone who sent us an afghan was entered into a drawing to win 10 skeins of Bernat Blanket Yarn.  We randomly selected a winner from all entries received and that winner is:

Raine H. of New York!

Raine, be on the lookout for an email from us.

From the very bottom of our hearts here at Prime Publishing’s StitchandUnwind.com, we cannot thank you enough for your generosity.  Your hard work and kindness is currently being shipped to Build-a-Bed, and will soon be keeping a child warm in bed.

Are you doing another build-a-bed charity for 2016. I was late finding out about it last year but I went ahead and made an afghan for this year. but I haven’t seen any advertising on any of the crochet sites.
I read up on 2014 and 2015 but none on 2016. Should I still send it in to Prime Publishing on Dandee Rd?
    Thank you
