Randomly generated blanket pattern from Granny Square Colors
One of the things I love the most about crochet granny squares is the ability to use a plethora of fun colors in one cuddly blanket. The bright colors bring a smile to my face whenever I pull the crochet afghan out of the closet, and I often have a hard time putting it away because I want to experience the colors all the time.
Recently though, I thought to myself that I’d love a granny square blanket that was more subdued in the color ranges, perhaps only using 6 coordinating colors throughout. I decided to use colors that melded well with the decor of my living room so that I could leave the blanket out all the time as part of my regular decorations. Once I started working on a pattern, though, I realized that I wanted a blanket that was random in the order of the colors in each square, but had all the colors in each square. That way I still had the fun visual variation of the brightly random afghans I kept stored away in the closet.
However,I quickly learned I’m not always the most creative in coming up with the random order of the colors and then combining that randomly ordered squares into a blanket so they look good. I need a pattern to tell me how the random goes! Luckily I came across a wonderful website called Granny Square Colors that took all the guesswork out of the process for me.
Once I chose and tested a square to make, how many colors I planned to use, and measured to see how many squares I’d need , I was able to go to the site and enter in how many blocks wide and how many tall, followed by the number of colors I was using. Once I hit the “GENERATE” button, I was presented to a randomly ordered blanket that I loved, using the colors I put in. How cool is that?
Of course, the hardest part of this is deciding what crochet granny square pattern to use for a design like this. I decided to go with a simple design as I feel that this will let the colors shine more than the design, which was my ultimate goal. Of course, you could choose your design before you pick your colors and go with something more visually appealing to you. Here are a few of the simple granny square designs that I picked through to find the one perfect for my randomly generated pattern. These squares all feature the concentric rings of color like the design generated for me above.

I have recently started a site, the information you provide on this web site has helped me greatly.
Thank you for all of your time & work.
Just spotted this post in Stitch & Unwind’s Christmas 2016 list of “yarn life hacks”. I make a lot of charity afghans for Project Linus, almost all of which are granny square afghans (a very easy technique which lends itself to stashbusting small quantities of many different yarns), and the linked “Granny Square Colors” random pattern generator will be a big help, particularly when my supply of yarn in neutral colors (my usual hack for ensuring that otherwise wildly-variegated squares will all go together) is low or used up. I’ve bookmarked that website, and look forward to making use of it!
