Oh my gosh! Have you ever met a celebrity whom you admire so much? Were you speechless when you met them or did you say something silly that you wished you hadn’t? I got the chance to not only meet Drew Emborsky, aka The Crochet Dude, but I also got to crochet with him at STITCHES Midwest! This was the coolest thing ever; Drew is the nicest man and it was really neat to sit down and get to know him. I took his class From Bracelets to Necklaces where I learned how to crochet around a cabone ring. Although I’ve been crocheting for four years now, I think I will always consider myself a beginner crocheter and I’ve never stepped out of the box to crochet around objects like this. To my surprise, it was quite easy! If you’re just learning how to crochet you can easily make it work. The other ladies in the class had really pretty and sparkly colors, while I stuck with my plain black and purple crochet colors, but it turned out really cute. Aside from making bracelets and necklaces with cabone rings, the options are really endless. You can attach them to a bag for a fun design element, you can attach multiple rings together to form handles of a purse, or you can join multiple rings together to form the top part of a top or dress, while having the bottom be a lacy or worsted weight bodice; this is a great way to use your creativity.
And did you know that Drew has his own yarn line? When I got to see and feel the yarns in person, I felt like a VIP because not many people get to experience something like that…in front of a star! The names that Drew picked for each of his yarn colors are really neat because there’s a story behind each one. When Ben, the founder of XRX and the STITCHES shows called Drew Iconic, the name just stuck, so he named one of his yarns Iconic. He was also called sarcastic, so again, a new yarn name was born. It was a pleasure meeting Drew and I can’t wait to crochet something with his yarn!
