I’m a fan of hats. Mom taught us to keep our extremities covered – it keeps the heat in. You need a hat for your head. Hands can always find someplace small to warm up – a pocket, an armpit, your sweeties hand! But your head needs to be cozy too – hats fill the job.
Sure, you could use a scarf, ear warmers, or a thick headband. But a hat is personality!

How can I choose between hats and mittens?? That’s like asking do I like getting my hair styled, or getting a manicure?? Of course I love both!! I really enjoy all the different styles of hats and I was very impressed by the slouchy hats for the USA Olympics. OTH being a hard working hard playing woman, I really need gloves, from October through March. My favorite are making wrist warmers or fingerless gloves, so that I could continue face booking, iPad playing, fishing, crafting, knitting, etc. etc. etc. so don’t make me choose one or the other, that’s just inhumane!!!

That’s a challenging question! I’ve made both, and really enjoy the thrill of seeing the hat or mittens finally take shape! But the frosting on the cake for me is the eternal sublime wonderment of seeing something I’ve made from my own two hands every time I use “IT,” or when I see someone special to me use “IT.” “IT” to me is a pair of mittens; made by me, with some special rows or an unexpected yarn thrown in; making it a truly a one-of-a-kind unique pair of mittens! When I wear a pair of my own one-of-a-kind hand-made mittens, the wonderment is CONSTANTLY with me, every time I look down at my hands. When I wear a hat that I’ve made, I can not see it, and when I get a compliment on it, I have to stop and think about which one I am wearing. For the ENDURING WONDERMENT FACTOR, I have to say I am a fan of MITTENS!

I prefer hat to mittens for several reasons; I knit to enjoy it and working with dp needles it’s not really fun…whereas…in the case of a hat you can unleash your imagination, making a ridge by knitting from several rows down below, and many other tricks. When it is finished you can have marvels embellishing it!
But, most important, I sometime knit for charity; and many, many people need a simple, warm hat.

I’ve already made a new hat for him from cammo yarn so he’ll have a special hat from Mom just in case. I grew up on a farm before high tech gloves and mittens came about. We had our morning chores and nothing speaks to winter as watering horses and setting down the buckets only to have to leave your hand wear behind because they are frozen solid to the bucket handle. Anyone remember sliding down a HUGE hill and landing in pricker bushes? ….. and the hours it would take to take out all of those little hooks from your knitted mittens and scarfs? Ok- so it would take me longer than it may have taken you as I was terrified of those little balls of terror.
