Purple Monkey Amigurumi Pattern (Free Crochet Pattern)

This is an intermediate crochet pattern that is made using worsted weight yarn in your two favorite colors. A little bit of stuffing is used to bring Penelope to life.

 Penelope the Purple Monkey:

MATERIALS:

  • 80 yds of Worsted Weight Yarn in Color A (I used Lily Sugar n’ Cream in Hot Purple)
  • 30 yds of Worsted Weight Yarn in Color B. (I used Lily Sugar n’ Cream in White)
  • Size H 5.0mm Hook for head, body, and outer ear
  • Size G 4.0mm Hook for inner ear, face, arms, legs, and tail
  • Yarn Needle
  • Stitch Markers
  • (2) 5mm Safety Eyes
  • Fiber Fill Stuffing
  • Embroidery Floss
  • Embroidery Needle

ABBREVIATIONS:
sc – single crochet
sc dec – single crochet decrease
sl st – slip stitch
ch – chain
sk – skip

NOTES:
The head, body, arms, legs, and tail of this monkey are worked in a continuous round. This is where the stitch marker comes in handy. You will not join unless specified.

INSTRUCTIONS:

Monkey Face:
With Color B and size G hook,
Ch 7
Row 1: sc in the 2nd chain from hook and in each st across. Ch 1, turn. (6)
Row 2: 2 sc in the first st, sc in each of the next 4 sts, 2 sc in the last st. Ch 1, turn. (8)
Row 3: 1 sc into each st across. Ch 1, turn. (8)
Note: The curved part of the face will be worked in 2 halves.
Row 4: 1 sc into the next 4 sts. Ch 1, turn. (4)
Row 5: sk first st, sc in the next 2 sts, sl st in the last st. Ch 1, turn (4)
Row 6: sk the sl st from the previous row, sc in the next st, sl st in the last st. Fasten off (2)
For the other side of the face, join yarn in 5th st of Row 4.
Row 4 cont’d: Ch 1, sc in the same st and in each of the next 3 sts. (4)
Repeat Rows 5 and 6. Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.

Outer Ear (Make 2):
With Color A and size H Hook,

Magic circle, ch 1.
Round 1: 6 sc into the magic circle. Join, ch 1. (6)
Round 2: 2 sc into each st around. Join, ch 1. (12)
Round 3: 1 sc into each of the next 10 sts. Sl st into the last 2 sts. Join. Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing. (12)

Inner Ear (Make 2):
With Color B and size G Hook,

Magic circle, ch 1.
Round 1: 6 sc into the magic circle. Join, ch 1. (6)
Round 2: 2 sc into each st around. Join, ch 1. (12)
Round 3: 1 sc into each of the next 10 sts. Sl st into the last 2 sts. Join. Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing. (12)

Tummy:
With Color B and size G Hook,

Magic circle, ch 1.
Round 1: 6 sc into the magic circle. Join, ch 1. (6)
Round 2: 2 sc into each st around. Join. Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing. (12)

Head:
With Color A and H Hook,

Magic circle, ch 1.
Round 1: 6 sc into the magic circle. (6)
Round 2: 2 sc into each st around. (12)
Round 3: *1 sc into the next st, 2 sc into the next st.** Repeat from * to ** around. (18)
Round 4: *1 sc into the next 2 sts, 2 sc into the next st.** Repeat from * to ** around. (24)
Round 5: *1 sc into the next 3 sts, 2 sc into the next st.** Repeat from * to ** around. (30)
Round 6-11: 1 sc into each st around. (30)
Round 12: *1 sc into the next 3 sts, sc dec.** Repeat from * to ** around. (24)
Round 13: *1 sc into the next 2 sts, sc dec.** Repeat from * to ** around. (18)
Round 14: *1 sc into the next st, sc dec.** Repeat from * to ** around. (12)
Start stuffing the head. Before finishing off, sew on the face, attach the safety eyes, and embroider the nose using the embroidery floss and embroidery needle. Finish stuffing until the head looks round and full.
Round 15: sc dec around. Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing. (6)

Body:
With Color A and H Hook,

Magic circle, ch 1.
Round 1: 8 sc into the magic circle. (8)
Round 2: 2 sc into each st around. (16)
Round 3: *1 sc into the next st, 2 sc into the next st.** Repeat from * to ** around. (24)
Round 4: *1 sc into the next 2 sts, 2 sc into the next st.** Repeat from * to ** around. (32)
Round 5-10: 1 sc into each st around. (32)
Round 11: *1 sc into the next 2 sts, sc dec.** Repeat from * to ** around. (24)
Round 12: *1 sc into the next st, sc dec.** Repeat from * to ** around. (16)
Stuff the body.
Round 13: sc dec around. (8)
Round 14: sc dec around. Fasten off and weave ends. (8)
Sew on the white tummy center using a yarn needle and whip stitch.

Arms (Make 2):
With Color B and G Hook,

Magic Circle, ch 1.
Round 1: 4 sc into the magic circle. (4)
Round 2: 2 sc into each st around. (8)
Round 3: 1 sc into each st around. (8)
Change to Color A.
Round 4: sc dec around. (4)
Round 5-11: 1 sc into each st around. (4)
Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.

Legs (Make 2):
With Color B and G Hook,

Magic Circle, ch 1.
Round 1: 6 sc into the magic circle. (6)
Round 2: 2 sc into each st around. (12)
Round 3: *1 sc into next st, 2 sc into next st** Repeat from * to ** around. (18)
Round 4: 1 sc into each st around. (18)
Change to Color A.
Round 5: *1 sc into the next st, sc dec** Repeat from * to ** around. (12)
Round 6: sc dec around. (6)
Round 7-12: 1 sc into each st around. (6)
Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.

Tail:
With Color A and G Hook,

Magic Circle, ch 1.
Round 1: 4 sc into the magic circle. (4)
Round 2-25: 1 sc into each st around. (4)
Fasten off and leave a long tail for sewing.

Assembly:

•    First, attach the inner ear to the outer ear by laying the inner ear on top of the outer ear. Using a yarn needle and the tail from the inner ear, whip stitch the two pieces together. Fasten off and weave the ends. Do the same for the other ear.
•    Next, attach the ears to the head by positioning them, one at a time, and sewing them to the side of the head using the yarn needle and tail from the outer ear. Fasten off and weave all ends.
•    Position the head on top of the body. Using the long tail from the head and a yarn needle, sew the head to the body. Fasten off and weave ends.
•    Attach the arms, legs, and tail, one at a time, with the yarn needle and yarn tails. Fasten off and weave all ends.
