Pattern of the Day: Christmas Wine Bottle Topper

December 17, 2014 by AllFreeCrochet 2 Comments

FestiveBeadedBottleToppersmall‘Tis the season for holiday hostess gifts, and this Christmas Wine Bottle Topper is perfect for all of your festive holiday get-togethers.

The Christmas Wine Bottle Topper works up quickly and uses just a small amount of red, white, and green yarn. For an extra festive finishing touch, add some holiday colored beads. The topper is constructed in the round, so there are no seams.

Whether you’re hosting the holidays this year, or heading to a friend or family member’s holiday party, this free crochet pattern makes an excellent accompaniment to any bottle of wine or champagne. Make a few to have on-hand; you  never know when a special occasion will pop up!

A huge thanks to Jennifer Dickerson of Fiber Flux for this festive holiday pattern!

Christmas Wine Bottle Topper

SIZE:
1.5 inches across top
5 inch circumference (when on a bottle)

ABBREVIATIONS:
dc: double crochet
sl st: slip stitch
ch: chain

MATERIALS:

  • Worsted weight yarn of your choice (Bottle topper pictured was crocheted with Red Heart Super Saver in White, Cherry Red, and Spring Green)
  • J (6.0 mm) Crochet Hook
  • Tapestry/Yarn Needle
  • Beads with large openings to accommodate yarn.  Topper shown used 11 beads.

INSTRUCTIONS:
(note: I worked one color per round, to change colors, I simply snipped the yarn, fastened off, and tied the new color right on)
Ch 4, join in the ch farthest from the hook to create a ring.
Round 1: Ch 3 (counts as first dc) and work 11 dc into the center of the ring
Round 2: Ch 3 (counts as first dc)  and work a dc in each space around.  Join to close round with a slip stitch.
Repeat round 2 three more times.
Before beginning beaded round use a tapestry needle to string beads onto the yarn.  I used 11 beads, but I strung extra just in case.
Beaded round: Ch 3, working a bead into the third ch at the top.  Repeat round 2 as before, except you will be adding one bead to each dc stitch.  (Note: the beads will be turned inward…that is OK for now, proceed to next section for finishing)
If you have never crocheted with beads before, check out this super helpful video.
Finishing and Assembly:
Weave in any ends.  The beaded round will be turned in, flip it outward, kind of like you would a ski hat.  Top your bottle of choice and you’re finished!

Have you crocheted any hostess gift ideas this year?
