My Little Owly: A Free Crochet Pattern

March 28, 2012 by AllFreeCrochet 18 Comments

If you haven’t heard the news or you’re new to this blog…I’m expecting! This will be the first new addition to our family, aside from the dog we got a year ago. I’m due the end of August so of course I have to go through the hot sizzling summer. I’m really hoping it doesn’t get too hot out; we’ve had some crazy weather so there’s really no way to tell.

With that said, I wanted to make a little something for my peanut. Since I’ve been learning more and growing with my crochet skills, I’ve been a little more daring and trying new patterns. When I came across this adorable owl pattern from Coats and Clark I just knew that’s what I wanted to make. The picture is super cute, but since we don’t know if we’re having a boy or girl I wanted to use neutral colors. We painted the room light green and brown with a white chair rail to separate the colors. Because of that, I decided to go with a light green yarn that will match the room perfectly.

What do you think? Should I add some feet or ears? It doesn’t stand on its own, but I figured we’ll just put it up on a shelf anyway. I love this little guy!

If you’re in love with this little owl too, you might like these others:

  2. Owl Beanie
  3. Owl Hat Applique

If you make this owl for a baby shower gift or even yourself, what colors would you choose?

I’d probably make that adorable thing the same color. New grandson on the way and that color is in the scheme of the shower. 🙂 Thank you for the pattern !

    CONGRATS!!!

I had to go my first pregnancy through the hot summer as well … funny thing though I froze most of the time. Here every one else is in shorts and a t-shirt and I’m in pants and a fleece pull around.

The owl is so cute as well … I think I would leave him just as is.

I would probably use a gold with brown trim for the eyes and wings and beak. You could crochet a circle to sew on the bottom so it could “sit” without being propped up.

I’ve made dozens of Amigutprumi (small critters) and found that I needed to make two legs or two feet AND a tail to make the critters stand.

With snowmen, similar to the owl, I made round bases and attached to bottom of the body to help snowmen stand up.

At one point in the beginning, I even put marbles or small pebbles in bottom third of the body to weight bottom of amigurumi critter.

On ducks and chickens, just need two ovals for feet, and make tiny tail, enough for tripod effect.

    Enjoy your critter crocheting!

I love the pattern, but when I tried to download the PDF, it seemed to come as just a PD and looked like a webpage at the top (favourites, etc.) I couldn’t save it and will have to print later at work (mine not working right now)and then email it to me. I like to save the patterns on my computer for later use as I don’t have the place to store printed patterns. Shirley

Was just able to do it. I happened to have the curser sitting on the PDF and it came up with a box. Different from what I am used to with PDF. Just downloaded Adobe Reader X so maybe a different format. Shirley

When making stuffed toys for babies I always sew on crocheted eyes or embroider the feature. Your little one is going to want to chew and play with your owl.

Thanks for all the great compliments everyone! As for safety features, like I said, it will most likely be sitting on a shelf…not for play.

    Thanks again!

Please – remove the button eyes and use black yarn for the eyes.

Babies and toddlers like to suck and chew when they are teething and could too easily swallow a button and choke to death.

Please – Please – Please save a baby that you love from a choking death by removing the button eyes.

    With love
    Linda
