Granny Square Cowl Crochet Pattern

August 15, 2019 by Bethany Dearden Leave a Comment

Hello all! It’s Bethany again, the blogger behind Whistle and Ivy. I was thinking today about how much I am grateful for seasons. Isn’t it wonderful? Just about the time you are fed up with the current temperatures, the world shifts and gives you a lovely change (at least here in Northern Utah). As much and I love barbecues, flowers and green grass, I am starting to look forward to fall and scarf weather. I am not wishing away the summer! However September and May are my favorite months, so I am excited for their respective arrivals. And in anticipation for September’s arrival, I am sharing this pretty Granny Square Cowl crochet pattern today!

Granny Square Cowl

What you need:
-Size I Hook (or hook to achieve a 5″ square
-Medium Weight Yarn (5 colors)
(You will need less than a skein of each color)

>>>>Begin by working 12 Aurora Flora Granny Squares.<<<<

The gauge is not super important, but you want them about 5″ across. I liked to mix and match the colors, so I used a few different color combinations. To keep conformity, I used the same color order, but I began the squares with a different color. If you want the main color of the cowl to be the same, be sure to work the last two rows of each square with the same color (heather gray).

Once you have finished the squares and weaved in the tails, sew them together by sc across the side. Line two squares up, fronts facing each other. Start in the corner sc, the middle of the 3 worked in the corner. Working through the back loops ONLY of both squares (the loop closest to you, and the loop farthest from you), sc across the side and work the last st in the middle of the 3 sc the corner on the other side. This will cause a tall sc seam in the back (pictured), but a beautiful join on the front.

Once you have the twelve joined in a long piece, you can join the two ends together using the same sc method, forming your cowl. Be sure to fold your piece so that right sides are facing in.

If you like the height of your cowl you can stop there, but I like my cowls a bit more full, so I joined my yarn at (any) join, and worked 2 rows of dc stitches,  and 1 row of sc around both the top and the bottom.

Weave in your ends, and enjoy your new granny square cowl!
