Autumn is my favorite season. Not only do knitting needles start coming out in full force, but so do the fall colors. The slightly nippy weather makes wearing wool sweaters or socks a real treat. There is something about the colors that come out during fall–dark oranges, reds, greens, browns, and yellows– that makes me think of farms. Going apple picking or getting a pumpkin for Halloween from a farm is one of the best ways to spend a fall afternoon (not counting knitting, of course).
As a knitter, I look for inspiration in the world around me. When I’m vising a farm or farmer’s market to pick up some produce, I start noticing patterns that would look perfectly at home if worn during a harvest festival. Rustic patterns have a wonderfully unassuming charm, and knitters of all ages appreciate the slightly unpolished, handmade look of these homemade items. The autumn palette is perfect for the fall knitter looking to create a memorable project.
