Harvest Season: Rustic Knitting Patterns

September 26, 2013 by AllFreeKnitting 2 Comments

Harvest-Season-FullAutumn is my favorite season.  Not only do knitting needles start coming out in full force, but so do the fall colors.  The slightly nippy weather makes wearing wool sweaters or socks a real treat. There is something about the colors that come out during fall–dark oranges, reds, greens, browns, and yellows– that makes me think of farms.  Going apple picking or getting a pumpkin for Halloween from a farm is one of the best ways to spend a fall afternoon (not counting knitting, of course).

As a knitter, I look for inspiration in the world around me.  When I’m vising a farm or farmer’s market to pick up some produce, I start noticing patterns that would look perfectly at home if worn during a harvest festival.  Rustic patterns have a wonderfully unassuming charm, and knitters of all ages appreciate the slightly unpolished, handmade look of these homemade items.   The autumn palette is perfect for the fall knitter looking to create a memorable project.

5 Rustic Knitting Patterns

Country Cottage Baby Cardi – Keep your little one nice and warm with this classic knitted baby cardigan.  Your baby will look picture perfect bundled up in this understated, yet attractive, sweater.

Black Cherry Cowl – Spruce up your fall ensemble with this simple cowl pattern.  A basic rib stitch creates most of the body of this cowl, so this is a great pattern for a beginning knitter who has a subtle fashion sense.

Rustic Braided Headband – Some of those autumn days can get chilly!  Keep your ears warm with this deceptively easy headband.  Beginners and more experienced knitters alike will love this pattern.

Diamonds on the Cuff – Looking for just a touch of lace?  This cardigan pattern features elegant lace cuffs that don’t detract from the straightforward practicality of this cute sweater.

Autumn Sweater Vest – Visit the farm in style with this warm sweater vest.  Vests are actually quite fun to knit, since you get all the thrill of knitting a sweater while skipping the tedious sleeves.

What inspires you during the fall?
