I tend to get more than a little excited when October rolls around; the sights and smells of fall are starting to take off in earnest, the changing leaves alone are a sight to behold, and the cooling weather heralds my favorite holiday–Halloween. Halloween tends to be overshadowed by the festivities of Thanksgiving and Christmas, but I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for the holiday. Unlike the family-centered themes of the other big holidays, Halloween, to me, is all about possibilities. You can be anyone or anything you want to be on Halloween, your only limit is imagination and creativity. The freedom implicit in the costume tradition is reason enough to celebrate, but there’s free candy and delicious desserts thrown into the mix as well.
Knitters are perfectly situated to take advantage of the costumes that suddenly appear at the end of October. Using our talents with the needles, knitters can create costumes, or parts of a costume, that will make people’s heads turn. Let’s not forget how cold it can get on October 31st; having a knit costume that doubles as a source of warmth can be a real advantage when tramping around in search of candy after the sun has gone down. Try out one of these homemade Halloween costume patterns, and you’ll see how fun knitting for the holiday can be! Or, if you’re not quite up to knitting a pink Hallowig, try out one of these homemade candy recipes for a delicious treat.
