It depends on how much stash you have. I store mine on shelving in clear plastic bins, grouped by type and color. My stash is small right now because we just moved.
It’s most important to keep it dust, bug and smoke free.

Storage is a problem. The majority is in two Lion Brand green totes with the skeins in plastic bags inside the totes. THEN I have some in 3 hatboxes that sit prettily in the corner and THEN I have some in a 4 drawer plastic chest of drawers. THEN there’s the bag of yarn that’s waiting for me to finish the husband’s sweater so I can start one for myself. That one lives in the knee hole of my desk. I either need to de-stash or move someplace with more room!

I sore my yarn in Space bags. I like the cubes because it holds so much more yarn! They are the bags that you take the air out with your vaccum cleaner and they compress down. I make index cards of the yarns name, fiber type, ounces/grams, yards/meters, dye lot, guage and hook/needle size, how many balls, and tape a small piece of the actual yarn on the card. Put all the cards for the yarn that’s in the airtight cube in a plastic baggie and tape the baggie to the cube. Lots more space and then easier to tell my husband that I need to buy more yarn!!!!!

I keep my yarn in hanging, clear-front, zippered sweater bags or shoe bags. The sweater bags generally have 8 shelves and each can hold about 8 6-oz skeins. The shoe bags have 10 tiny shelves and are great for storing crochet thread, trims, and ribbon.
They keep the yarn clean, dust free, and easily visible. I can see at a glance how many skeins of each color I have. I currently have 3 full ones, but could use a 4th. I have just one of the hanging shoe bags.

Little bitty balls for miscellaneous projects go in Ziplocks. Wool goes into big colorful popcorn tins that I pick up at rummge sales and thrift store. Nice soft yarn for chemo hats go into larger ziplocks. Bulky yarn and rug yarn is rolled in balls sorted and saved in baskets which are nice decorative accents in my home. Colors are semi sorted into clear plastic bags and then all yarn which is put away for future projects go into big tubbies.

I have a container for offbeat yarns where I need a little of this or a little of that for some project. I also keep baggies with small notions in this container: buttons, embellishments, ribbons, beads etc.

Sometimes I think of Yarn Shops as just being temporary storage for my stash. But once it makes it ot my home, I either store it in plastic bins, or in zippered sweater bags. I buy them whenever I see them at a good price. They hold the yarn until I make the sweater, then keep the finished item protected. They’re also nice to give along with a knitted gift, so the receipient can also keep the item safe.

I store my yarn in lidded boxes (the kind reams of copy paper are shipped in) whose lives I have saved from being thrown into a crusher. I belong to the recycle, repair, reuse generation. There is ample room to label the boxes with yarn weight, color, etc. They stack in my craft room beautifully but the one I need to go through is always on the bottom…why is that?

I use plastic kitty litter jugs. I cut the tops off under the rim that forms the handle & pour spout using a knife or strong scissors. Then my yarn is sorted by color & type and put in lg. ziplock bags. The bags are put in the litter bins & placed on shelves. I’ve just discovered that this stores more yarn then the bags or bins alone. The bins have no rims to take up shelf space and the bags hold yarn that is over the top of the bin. (It also prevents my cats from fishing out yarn to play with!) You can also write on the bins with a permanent marker or tape a label with packaging tape.

We have recently moved so I currently have a majority of my stash in plastic bins in our storage area. Not long ago the kids and I managed to empty out an old suitcase filled with clothes that were, at the time, too big. Perhaps I will use that suitcase to pack some of my yarn that I recently have to add to my stash. Yes, even tho we have moved and a majority of my stash is in storage I admit that I still continue to add to it and use it. I am currently working on a “scrap yarn afghan”, which I am using to “store” some of my stash in. LOL!

My grandson’s outgrew the thing that has all the days of the week on them with little cubbies you store in the closet with there clothes for the day. Also, a over the door hanger for many shoes they are usually clear and the perfect size.I love the pocket size, you can store yarns and projects I get bored with. I save them for later in one spot. Also plastic coffee cans. A hole in the top and off I go.

I have some of my yarn stored in a zippered quilted plastic storage bag w/ a clear cover, that has about 40 separate compartments for storing shoes. The whole thing hangs up in the closet. Other yarn lives in three underbed storage containers. Moth-phobic yarns are kept safe in vacuum-sealed food storage bags that are then “filed” in plastic bins by fiber content.

I have the good stuff in really cute baskets and the acrylic stuff on some shelves in the closet. All of which are in my craft room=)

Hanging fabric sweater and shoe storage shelves allow me to see all the yarns, and the varied colors at the same time.

I use a shoe holder that hangs behind the door.

I store my yarn in wooden shoe holders. The kind that look like bookcases with square cubby holes. They sit on the floor and stack against a wall nicely.

I store my yarn in big plastic containers or zipper bags that blankets come in; and also in ziplock big storage bags.
