Welcome to Day 4 of our week-long celebration of I Love Yarn Day 2016 and another installment of Stitch & Unwind’s I Love Yarn Day Crochet Along! Today, we are so excited to share the next installment of the Groovy Berry Crochet Messenger Bag.
Don’t forget: if you missed any of the previous posts, you can find them all here.
Today, our friend Mary Beth Temple will be showing you how to complete the bottom right corner of the messenger bag. As seen below, this corner of the bag features another variation of the post stitch, but this one only uses two colors total. By placing post stitches in rows of single crochet, you’ll see a checkerboard pattern start to emerge.
The Groovy Berry Crochet Messenger Bag is a wonderful way to learn various crochet techniques since the front of the bag features four distinct panels. This crochet along will help you expand your crochet colorwork vocabulary while still working with only one color of yarn at a time.
And now, without further ado, check out the fourth installment of the crochet along by watching this helpful step-by-step video tutorial:

Looks interesting. I have been knitting for 47 years and crocheting 44 years. Always looking to try new patterns and yarns.
Yes, I have thought someone to crochet. It was my daughter and I will be teaching my sister when we visit over the holidays. It’s so fun to share the knowledge.
I love that pattern..I’m doing a basket weave in white and it’s so cool looking…Will try this version next…thank you..
I’ve taught several of my co-workers to crochet and also helped them to read patterns.
I taught a left-handed person how to crochet (I’m right-handed!) and I even taught my husband how to crochet. So now when he asks for a new washcloth, hat, or scarf, I tell him “well, you know how to do it, go for it!!” But I usually end up making them for him, because I’m a sucker and I kinda like the guy a little!!
I’m a newby to this website and have really been enjoying it. There are a lot of patterns I would really love to try. Thank you so much!
I am very new to the world of crochet and am loving the possibilities! I guess that I’m in the process of teaching myself. It will be fun to get to the point to share with others my new found passion.
I taught my son to crochet, but he decided he likes knitting better!
I’m also in the process of teaching my granddaughter…another person competing for my stash!!
Your product reminds me of when I was a kid
I really love crochet and look forward to my Stitch and Unwind newsletter everyday. I taught my son to crochet when he e=was in school. He was in Home Economics and he made a tote for one of his projects.
I have taught many people to crochet over the years! It is so wonderful to watch them create their own projects!
Great giveaway for a great day. Wish I could spend all day playing with my yarn, but since I work in accounting and the tax return extension is upon us, I will be working instead. Thanks for the chance. Fingers crossed I win!
I taught my girlfriend’s daughter how to crochet. I never realized she paid any attention to items I made, until she approached me about it when she was 17 years old. I often made her hats, scarves, etc., since she was born. I was just thrilled to teach her. Over 10 years later, and now she is making gifts for friends and family!
Think this is a nice way to keep people interested in different patterns.
I’m teaching all 4 of my kids to crochet and my oldest daughter is making this bag and she is loving it.
I helped to teach two of my nieces.
Yes I have taught my best friend to knit and also my grandaughter. They both love to knit as much as I do.
I taught my daughter to crochet
I was taught to crochet over 50 years ago by a dear friend of the family. While I am still at it I try to teach anyone who is interested. I taught my daughter’s friend over ten years ago and she still loves to make all of her own scarves. A wonderful way to spend time with younger people.
I taught my best friend’s daughter. She has become very talented and has made some amazing crochet creations! Once my daughter is older, I plan to teach her as well.
I’ve not taught anyone yet but my niece is interested in learning. We’re just trying to work out the meeting times and places.
I was taught to crochet when I was in 5th grade and haven’t stopped yet…my 5 year grandson wants to learn but doesn’t quite have the finger coordination yet….can’t wait to pass along my passion!!
I taught my sister how to crochet and now she’s trying to teach me how to knit. Thanks for the contest.
Have taught my eldest granddaughter to knit and crochet. She is a whiz at crochet now and polishing her knitting skills. Thanks for the contest.
I have taught some friends and some new people that wanted to join our knitting group how to knit.
My Grandma taught me to crochet and Ive taught my daughters and Granddaughters…I learned to crochet at 4yrs old. I was left handed and she was the only one who had enough patience to work w lefty.. I truly love to crochet…and im very happy to pass it along…
Hi, I just found your site and really like the messenger bag. i am going back and watching all the previous videos but noticed that the pattern given for day 3 does not describe what Mary is doing in the video. The pattern from day 3 actually coincides with the video for today (day 4). Could you post the pattern that describes the video on day 3?
At the same time the pattern posted today on Day 4 seems to describe the video which come tomorrow for the last front panel of the bag.
Thanks so much. Great patterns!
My daddy taught me how to crochet when i was 9, I’m now 52. I am teaching my 8 yr old granddaughter to crochet
My mom and grandmother both taught me how to crochet and I taught my daughter and am now teaching my best friend. She knew how to crochet before but due to a traumatic brain injury and subsequent amnesia had to relearn many things we all take for granted. Together we plan to learn how to knit. This pattern will be fun for both of us to do.
I am currently teaching a 9 year old how to crochet. I have taught several people to crochet, knitting seems to scare them – but we’ll just have to work on that.
I am in the process of teaching my niece how to crochet. She’s going through a difficult phase and crocheting together gives her something positive to focus on and is helping us to bond. We sit together and work on our own projects. I give her directions, one step at a time, and she is picking up on it so quickly. . We are now doing a crochet-along together. We picked out a pattern for each of us and, once a week, we send each other 2 steps from the pattern. It is such a special, bonding experience for both us. It’s teaching us both patience. I’m so proud to share my passion for crochet with the most special little girl in my life.
Love this cute bag!
I am always looking for new patterns to try! I can’t wait to give this one a go!:D
Yes, I have taught someone to knit, she is a great friend and now has her own Yarn Shop. I however have not been able to teach her how to do the heels in socks.
Not yet; I have some prospects, though!
I work at a craft store and help and encourage many new and seasoned crocheters and knitters. I love my job! =D
I have been crocheting for 26 years, I have taught a friend and my son and most recently as I’ve been in hospital 7 weeks, my sister. She’s here everyday and I’ve been making thank you gifts for nurses. So know she sits learning, she used to ask why do you like doing that it looks boring, I said it’s fun and relaxing, now she tells me oh my I know what you mean I can’t put down
I have taught several women to crochet over the years. My grandmother taught me when I was about 10 or 11. So I have been crocheting off and on for 40 years. I like the design on the messenger bag. I love that you have a tutorial.

i taught myself to knit/crochet. 😛
I taught myself and my youngest along with several of her classmates while homeschooling and will be going back home to New Mexico to teach my older cousin to crochet…
I taught an after school class on crocheting a few years ago. Some of the students picked it up fairly well. I did learn that I am not the best at teaching. Still, I am trying to teach my grand daughter. I also helped my oldest daughter when she was learning.
Yes, I have tried to teach someone to crochet. My daughter, Ashley. For some reason she just couldn’t get the hang of it. She dearly loves crocheted afghans so I try to keep her supplied since she isn’t able to do it herself. 🙂
I retaught myself to crochet last fall when everyone wanted a poncho! It was like riding bike, it came back to me very quickly. First thing in the morning, I grab my I pad, a coffee and look to see what great crochet pattern is on the menu! Thanks!
Yes. I have actually taught two people to crochet. My youngest daughter and my oldest granddaughter. I am left-handed and they are both right-handed. It was a challenge but a fun one. Being left-handed, I found the simplest why to teach someone crocheting is to have them sit in front of you as u work. Then once they get the basics down, I sit with them and guide their hand if necessary.
I started crocheting and knitting when i was 10 years old. I am left handed and had to find someone very patient, but i learned and have been crocheting and knitting ever since. Over the years through my church i have had the opportunity teach groups of young girls. hopefully they will pass along the skills to the next generation.
My grandmother taught me to crochet and I am going to continue the tradition by teaching my granddaughter when she Is old enough to hold the hook!
I’m having a little trouble mastering some of the stitches (thank goodness, crochet is easy to pull out and start again), but the finished product gives me motivation to keep trying.
Having been crocheting for 46 years, I have only taught one person to crochet.
My good friend Susan has been knitting for many years. She wanted to learn how to crochet and
I wanted to learn to knit. It has worked out perfectly for us!
