In Love with Linen Yarn: Knitting Patterns for Linen Yarn

June 28, 2019 by Hannah Hynes-Petty

As spring turns to summer and the temperatures rise, I can’t help but to turn my attention to linen yarn. Lovely, lovely linen, so light and airy with a beautiful drape. I’m not quite sure why I associate linen with interesting and modern pattern construction, but the two seem made for each other. Linen achieves a “look” that is simply unique—it is slippery and supple, and it doesn’t “squish” or fluff like wool, which makes it well suited to hot summer months. It is lustrous, silky, and strong. When blocked, it becomes smooth and lofty. I love the feel of linen on the skin, and most people can wear it (unlike wool). I’m a wool person through-and-through, but I have to admit there is something a bit magical about linen.

I put together a little collection of some of my favorite (free) linen yarn knitting patterns, and I hope you will knit some this summer!

linen tops

I think I’m addicted to tops with split backs or interesting hems!

I love how versatile linen tops can be—held with alpaca or wool, linen knits up into a heavier summer cardigan, or by itself, it makes a breezy top.

linen extras

Last but not least, my favorite fun linen “extras”—featuring my most favorite piglet dishcloth, a lovely silky scarf, a market bag and a color-blocked blanket replete with tassels. Linen is truly versatile!
