The polar vortex strikes again! I’m sure everyone in the United States can agree that this year’s winter has been particularly cold and long. I’m sure we’d all like to stay indoors on days when the thermometer dips below 0* F, but sometimes you just have to venture outside. There are plenty of ways to stay warm when wandering through a winter wonderland, but I’m a huge favorite of hand knits. There’s something deliciously warm about pulling on a wooly knitted hat or wrapping a cabled scarf around your neck.
It stands to reason that hand knit mittens are a must-have this winter. Between the cold and the snow, fingerless mitts and gloves—a typical winter stand-by—are right out. Mittens keep your hands completely cover and trap more warmth than gloves. They’re perfectly designed for really cold days. These mitten patterns would make great projects to give or keep.
You can always make a pair of mittens and donate them to our Mitten Charity Drive. AllFreeKnitting is teaming up with Mittens for Detroit and Lion Brand to help those in need this winter. I’d like to say a big thank-you to everyone who has donated a pair of mittens so far! We have collected over thirty pairs of mittens, but we’d love to see some more knit or crochet mittens from our readers. Click here to get all of the donation details. Although international donations are not eligible for our yarn prize, we would be happy to accept your donations to pass them onto Mittens for Detroit!
