Recently I was asked to write a review on The Finer Edge by Kristin Omdahl. Being the crochet enthusiast that I am, I was more than excited to review this book. Best of all, AllFreeCrochet is giving away a copy, too! Let’s tell you a bit about the book, first.

If you’re one who loves crocheted trims, motifs and borders then you’re going to fall in love with this book just by looking at the cover alone. The beautiful, bold colors and motifs will really catch your eye. When I opened the book to one of the first pages, I gasped because I saw pure beauty on a few sneak peek patterns. I just couldn’t wait to look through the rest of the book and when I did I came across stunning crochet patterns from cowls and coats to blankets, tops, shawls and bags. This book has a great variety of crochet patterns that use motifs to die for.

Before the patterns are even mentioned in the book there is a list of edging references to help you understand what types of edging designs will be used. Included in that list are top-down edgings, bottom-up edgings, side-to-side edgings and miscellaneous edgings. With all the types and examples of edgings used, it also mentions what patterns use each edge and what page you can find the pattern on.

The Finer Edge is a great reference tool for those wanting to learn how to crochet edges or those looking for new crochet designs to try out. Kristin Omdahl really relates to the crocheter by listing full patterns with charts and diagrams, making the patterns easy to follow. There are 40 stitches and 12 garment patterns to choose from; all of which use different techniques and construction methods. Most edgings are used to put a finishing touch on your project, but Kristin shows us how to create entire pieces with edging designs and motifs. This book will blow your mind with its crochet colors and pure brilliance, and now you have the chance to win your own copy! Don’t fret, if you don’t win this copy you can also purchase it at Interweave.

Granny squares are my favorite motif. They can be used to make virtually anything in crochet from slippers to sweaters to blankets and more. They’re also a great stash buster.

I’ve crocheted for years, staying away from grannies and motifs because I thought the joining would be tedious and impossible for me. But I’ve recently fallen in love with grannies due to the multitude of variations, how light (vs. a full afghan) to carry, how quickly they work up and how they can be used to make clothing as well as afghans. And surprise! surprise! They aren’t as difficult/tedious to join as I thought! So they’ve given me the courage to construct clothing — which I’ve also shied away from… as well as add several more afghan projects to my ongoing list. πŸ™‚

I have been crocheting for quite some time… Probably 50 of my 56 years. My teacher was my grandmother and she taught me everything to do with a crochet hook. I have favorite things at different. Such as granny square afghans at 10′ Hardangger pin lace at 15 , for afghans , , more afghans at 20 to 50. And now that I am a grandma I do clothes for lids and their baby s and dolls clothes along with scarves in all mediums of yarn, fabrics strings. I especially loves the table clothes and doilies. But my favorite is teaching the art of crochet.

I love to crochet. I have always done patterns with yarn. I was then inspired to crochet doilies. My mother taught me to crochet. She told me how as a baby she laid me on the bed next to her and she crocheted. As I sat at the bedside as she was dieing, I crocheted. I love her and I love to crochet. I like the shell stitch and the ripple stitch.

The past few years I have been teaching myself to crochet and I enjoy learning the stitches that give me the opportunity to create different motifs. The Queen Ann lace motif is a favorite of mine and can be done in all types of yarns with different effects. The Finer Edge book looks so intriguing since many of the stitches can create beautiful edgings, which can also be joined to create delicate scarves, and belts. I certainly will want this book in my crafting library.

While I LOVE motifs because they work up fast and are generally easy to do…I hate what comes after you’ve finished making the Motifs! Stitching the motifs together is something I absolutely HATE to do! I put off finishing one blanket for 2 YEARS because I simply could not get motivated to put in the time necessary for the joining of the motifs!

My favorite types of motifs to crochet are doilies and coasters. I am currently working on coasters with any type of heart design for my daughter’s bridal shower. I am going to give them as favors for all our friends and family that are attending the shower. I am trying to find as many different patterns as possible because I can’t see myself making 50 coasters of the same pattern. I can picture myself getting nauseous by the time I am half way through.

My favorite motifs to crochet are Granny Samplers. The reason why is because I get bored very quickly doing the same stitch over and over. With Samplers I can learn new stitches and create variations or compliment with colors to make the stitch pop out more.

I do not know if this qualifies as a motif, but I love using the long double crochet to make designs. One can turn out beautiful designs on a fairly plain background using this stitch. Whether or not I crochet small pieces or large afghans, this design(motif) always serves me well and turns out wonderfully. Now, adding a fancy edging would be the frosting on the cake.

I like granny squares and hexagons, but I often take quite awhile to finish a project because of the tediousness of the assembly. I’ve learned that I need to make enough squares or hexagons for a row or a section then assemble them before making any more. That way, I can break up the tedium with the fun.

I like flowers, especially Irish roses, because they can be used in so many ways and with a judicious change of colors and/or the addition or subtraction of one or two stitches in the pattern they can look so different. One little flower can the be start of a keepsake bookmark or stuck on a bobby pin it makes a lovely hair adornment. Several flowers can combine to be a hair bandeau or belt or doilies or garments – there is no limit..

Originally I would have always said my fav motif would be the plain ole granny square – but with all the new techniques and “CUTENESS” added to the basic patterns I have to say my favorite now would be the motifs with the animals designed as the center-stage for the granny square. I LOVE all things cute for children and the blankets I have seen with the Owls as center stage has captured my heart and even brought out the “kid” in me!! Once I decide on the perfect color combo I plan on making one for myself! And maybe I will find that perfect ‘edging’ to finish it off. ~Happy Crocheting!!~

I enjoy crocheting mitered squares and diagonal stripes because they make a more solid square (without holes that let in the cold air when you snuggle up in them or stick your fingers/toes through! –or make then into handbags, etc.), then putting them all together to make items that look like patchwork! Great fun, easy to transport and pick up anywhere I go, and it is relaxing to me at the same time. I love to crochet (and I love to knit!).

My favorite edgings are “by the inch” or side to side edgings, because you can make them any length you want, there is no beginning foundation chain to limit your size! I like to explore using edgings with different sizes of crochet thread and yarn, I make chokers and wrist cuffs and incorporate edgings regularly into my designs. It is very interesting what the same design can look like in a size 20 crochet thread or fine angora all the way up to a bulky wool!

In 1970 my husband’s grandmother and I colaborated together with tiny doilies, putting them all together to make a bedspread. It was so beautiful at the time. I only wish that I had not used it!!!!!

I taught myself to crochet about 3 years ago after seeing a wall hanging made of African Flowers (hexoganal granny “squares”) in my local knitting store. It was the owner’s attempt to bring back the art of crochet and to introduce their star chrochetter. After gasping in awe adn catching my breadth, I signed up to take a class in how to make these glorious patterns. I then rode home, went online, found my ubiquitous hook located in my knitting tool bag, and learned all I could in 2 weeks. I still love to make them!

I like the 12″ squares because they seem to work up faster. They also need to offer an interesting center and opportunity to add lots and lots of color with a variety of stitch patterns in the rounds. My current project is “Tropical Delight”, a pattern I searched forever to find as it is basically out of print now. It begins with a lovely flower resembling a magnolia blossom and continues with groups of tiny rose buds on the outer layers. Challenging, yes, but will it ever be beautiful when finished.

Where do I start? So many people have said granny squares, pineapple, flower, & snowflake motifs are their favorites, that it’s hard to choose. I think star motifs would be my favorites because they represent the simple beauty of the sky & there are numerous tales surrounding them. I think that when people couldn’t figure out how to get a star from the sky to look at, they turned to crocheting. Each person in the world has their own adaptation of the star motif, with others either adding onto that motif, taking something out, or making an entirely new motif. I’d like to learn to make my own star motif & make my crochet footprint on the world.

Bedspread and blanket motif generally anything currently working on a valentine motif for a bedspread that will be the beginning of a hope chest for a niece. Just finished a skull motif to make a shawl for another niece. They are so easy to take along in the car. if I get stuck in traffic my hands can be busy. No matter where I am I call them my “wasted time projects” when I have to waste time waiting on others I am happy cause I am actually accomplishing something. I always carried projects with me even in school, crocheting on breaks and on the bus to and from. πŸ™‚

I remember my mother decorating hankies with hairpin lace and I am so glad I learned how to do it. My only regret is that I did not learn to tat, but how to books are out there. Still crocheting is the best means of expression with yarn (knitting too). I have made many dish cloths that just light up the kitchen, but my simple cotton yarn ponchos and shrugs seem to take most of my interest. Maybe I can try to make a shrug with hairpin lace. My mind is always working…

I tend to like floral or star shaped motifs, but like so many others dislke the time it takes to put together motifs at the end, which is why I am reading Kristin Omdahl’s seamless crochet and hoping to find a way to overcome that dislike and add more motifs to my repetoire. Good luck everyone.

I have done grannie squares and even hexigons for a granny afghan. I just love the look of the edgings that you have shown. I love coming up with the fanciful edging to go along with the mood I’m in as I finish the shawl. I do both crocheting and knitting, mainly scarves/cowls, hats, shawls, dishcloths and afghans which I make as gifts. I especially love doing lacework, even for dishcloths. After all these years, I still search for different, delicate edgings that will enhance that certain item. As I tell my daughter (re makeup) a little goes a long way!! Same goes for edgings and motifs, a simple edge or motif can make that item look so much more complicated and elegant.

I make each round of the square a different color. Of course they compliment each other. And when I have enough I put them together fir another blanket with white yarn so if I make a ripple blanket and gave yarn left over I make square motifs with the left overs. Without a doubt, the grannies. They are a link to my beautiful mother. She was an immigrant from Portugal and very frugal. She would go to rummage sales and buy wool sweaters and take them apart for the yarn. We would sit together and pull and roll into little balls. I loved winding the curly yarn in to the balls while she told me stories. She would get the most beautiful colors and make the most colorful warm blankets. This was in the 1940’s,50’s. I have these beautiful afghans. I pull them out in the winter.

I have been crocheting for close to 30 years. I’ve made so many Afghans, I love the fine thread crocheting. A friend got me started by teaching me the beautiful doilies. But you can make only so many of those. I then discovered (from my Grandmother) how to edge. Towels, Sheets, Pillow cases; they are practical and beautiful. How to make already beautiful things outstanding. They become keepsakes. I’ve never been afraid to try something new, learn a new stitch or pattern. I thank a friend for that for teaching me how to read patterns and charts. Edging has opened a new door of discovery. I’m looking forward to checking out this new book!

i love crocheting motifs of unusual shapes – triangles, stars, ovals – because they’re so much more challenging to work with than squares. you have to get creative in joining them, and the edges of a project can end up looking rather odd. figuring out how to make it all come together into a cohesive whole makes the finished product more special than a more straightforward project might.

Today, all these years later, that same bedspread adorns our king sized bed and my husband marvels all the time at the beauty and longevity of something so simple to make, yet timeless in beauty and warmth.

Being an abused child…. crocheting was my way to escape… When I was little I learned to chain…. any discarded bits were tied together and used.. I hid them until I was taken out of my mother’s home and when placed in a more stable environment I would decorate my room with the strings..UNTOLD amounts of chain was strewn around my room.. I taught myself to do different stitches and then to read patterns… I made a few things when I was younger but never had very much time being a single mother… Now I am making hats and bibs and booties and blankets for my first granddaughter… I would have to say I love crocheting curlie q’s either as edging or as little ponytails on a hat. She will love them when she is little and appreciate them when she is grown and making her own blankets… (I plan on teaching her) She will realize how much effort and love went into each and every one!! πŸ˜€

Grannies are portable, pretty and easy enough that I can work on one just about anywhere and/anytime I’m dealing with the fear, panic, or depression. Once the people around me become accustomed to seeing me pull out some yarn and start crocheting away, it actually can help a great deal.

Of course that means the recipient of anything I make also gains because almost without exception every item I make is different since I also dislike repeating a whole complete afghan, sweater whatever with the same pattern colors etc…

I love using simple edges on washers because as I work I can imagine that my sister is sitting beside me doing the same. I can remember my family and how even when apart we can be as close as the threads in a double crochet stitch. Most of all I remember those ladies in my life who have passed and hope that when my turn comes, maybe someone will edge a washer and remember me.

I love the lacy motifs, with a celtic feel to them, they make wonderful skirts and scarves, or table runners. I recently made a clutch using crochet thread with a celtic motif. πŸ˜€
