Memorial Day Yarn American Flag – An Easy Scrapbuster!

May 24, 2020 by Stefanie Girard Leave a Comment

Decorations that are BIG and EASY have got to be some of my favorite things to make. Oh and ones that I get to use my stash are even better! That is just what this big yarn flag is. I love to decorate in red, white and blue for Memorial Day, I actually tend to leave up the decorations all summer through Labor Day.

This project is super easy!

I happen to have a stash of red, white and blue yarn so I could make my flag with a variety of yarns but I’m sure you could make this flag with just 1 ball of each color.

The only other material you need is a dowel.

TIP: I hung the dowel lower that I was planning on displaying my yarn flag just to make it easier to work on.

The measurements for this flag are about:

27 inches wide overall of the yarn area

4 1/2 feet tall or 54 inches

26 is the blue area

28 is the length of the red and white stripes below the blue area

Simply drape the yarn over the dowel to the desired length and cut the yarn form the ball. I chose to leave all the ends a bit random rather than trim them all to the exact length. This was simply a personal choice.

Each red and white strip consists of about 5 strands of yarn. There are a few that have 6. I felt in a few cases an extra was needed based on the thickness of yarns used.

The red and white strips of yarn are tied to the blue ends of yarn.

To make the “stars” I simply knotted a piece of white yarn on the blue strands loosely. I did this so I could slide them around to adjust their location on the blue field.

After I had all the yarn in place I raised the dowel back up. It currently is hung in the open area of a sliding glass door and when the breeze blows the yarn flag flows nicely.

Happy Memorial Day!
