Thanks to everyone who participated in yesterday’s Reader’s En-Gauge post! I love when we can get everyone involved and share our tips. If you missed everyone’s answers, be sure you check them out! The question we asked was:
What tips do you have for keeping an even tension?
Congratulations to Paula, who wrote:
“I make sure I have plenty of yarn free from the skien. I wrap around my little finger and behind the other 2 finger and over my index finger. Seems to work. My Mom taught me to crochet many years ago. She made all these doillies with big ruffles on them and starched very stiff. They were all over the house and very pretty.”
Yay, Paula! Please contact us for your prize.

Making great use of your “pinky” finger.
If I’m using a very textured yarn that seems to ‘drag’ on my hook, I’ll put some talcum powder on my hook to help the yarn glide. This also a good tip when the humidity is high and things seem sticky.
When I knit I wear jeans. I do this because I put one needle between my legs where the flat end of the needel catches on the seam to keep it held in place. This way it helps me to keep the tension by having a free hand to make sure I don’t lose any stitches and I can pull the yarn with that free hand. Looks kind of silly but, it has sure works for me!
Congrats to Paula. I just want to add that I dont really have a special technique and my crochet tension always seems to work out fine for me. All I do is hold the thread with my left pointer finger. I dont wrap it I bend my finger like its another hook and crochet away. I dont know if my finger just automatically adjusts for tension but all my projects so far have worked up fine.
LOL.. I thought we all did this and you wanted an extra way to keep an eye on your tension. This is the way everyone I know holds their yarn to crochet. Nothing new about that. LOL Anyway, Congrats to Paula!!!!
