Sometimes we need a little mystery in our lives to spice things up. I’m not saying you’ve got to bust out the Agatha Christie novels or anything (although come to think of it, that sounds pretty nice right about now!) but every now and then a little curiosity can go a long way. Since it’s the middle of the week, I thought I’d add a little excitement to the blog today and bring you seven mysterious knitting patterns that all have one stitch in common! But what are these patterns, you ask? You’ll just have to find out for yourself, but I’ll give you two hints: all of them are knit shawl patterns, and all of them use the garter stitch.
This is the perfect time of year to work up a knit shawl, and I can guarantee that all of these patterns are as comfortable as they are fashionable! Whether you want to spread the love and gift one to a friend or make one and keep it for yourself, you’re sure to find a mystery pattern that appeals to you. This is the only way I knit. I learned as a young child over 70 years ago. I cannot knit for the life of me the way I see every one else knit. I thought I was the only one that knit with the needle under the arm. How easy and fast this is and your right hand is always free , no dropped stitches.
I too knit with one needle under my arm. I’ve tried other methods but don’t feel comfortable at all. I may try knitting socks on a circular needle though as always got in a knot with 4 dpn. Funny my mother and gran knitted with 2 short needles so don’t know how I learnt to knit at all. Maybe self taught.
I gave up the double pointed needles when I learned the magic loop, which wasn’t that difficult. However, I am a continental knitter. I’m guessing you two knit American style, because in continental I you have no need to let go of either of your needles or put one under your arm. I’m 70 and I learned from my German/Swedish mother when I was 5 or 6. She only knew how to knit that way, which was fortunate because I’m left handed and she wasn’t. It doesn’t make any difference in Continental knitting.
O how lovely to read about the different ways of knitting. I am 87 yrs old and learnt knitting at school.
but my Mother who came from Germany knits different. Last time I went to Europe, I bought ALL the
sizes in LONG knitting needles. I simply cannot manage to knit if I cannot hold one needle under one arm.But now I have found a new love. Crochet. Absolutely terrific. And so easy to pick up, carry around or whatever. . I am emptying my drawers and use the different yarns for baby hats. I like to play with colours. I have already donated 50 baby hats to Charities. So rewarding in using up my yarn scraps.
Keep up the good work.

I finally started to knit after years of buying all the items for knitting, my first project was a pair of knitted sock /shoes. It came out OK i wear them around the house so I guess it is functional. My favorite stitch is the garter stitch. I went back to crochet. I do want to make a knitted top, that maybe my next project.
Hi everyone, I learned to knit when I was 5yo, I’m now in my 70’s
