I store my yarn in clear plastic tubs by brand. I also have quarter skein or less yarn wrapped around a clothespin and the end of the yarn clipped in the end of the clothespin so it doesn’t unravel. These are all stored in a clear plastic tub.
I crocheted bins high enough to stand the skeins on end. I used a large needle and three or four strands at a time.. I used all my small balls of yarn. I have many sizes and colors, as I use the yarn. I find many uses for the bins. I rolled doun the top and filled with Easter candy for the grandchildren. One became a bag for shopping. The cat claimed one for afternoon naps. It sits near a sunny window. A bag I used eyelash yarn in became my grandaughters purse. I put handles on each side for easy moving from shelf to shelf. I use air tight containers also.
My yarn is sorted by fiber and by brand. I have my wool in airtight clear plastic tubs. Cotton and acrylic are in assorted bins and boxes. Either I have too much yarn or not enough containers!
My craft room is a mess…but my yarn is stored by weight in plastic tubs and sturdy boxes with lids. I do need some more ideas for storage and getting rid of the chaos that is my craft room.
My yarn is stored in cubbies like the ones they have in school and in the stores. It is organized by color and weight, so it does look quite decorative. Also when you pass by, it gives you an urge to finish the project that you are working on and to begin another.
i’ve four big stacking see-through bins that i sort my yarn in. it’s handy, since i do not keep a large stash of yarn on hand.
I store all my left overs in mason jars by color. Not only is it all organized, but it becomes a beautiful decoration.
I don’t have a real sorting system for my yarn yet. I have a lot of my yarn in a HUGE VB bag, although it doesn’t all fit, along with my knitting needles & crochet hooks in the pockets. I have yarn that is just in bags tagged with the pattern that I intend to use it for. I have so many projects I want to do, I would forget when I get around to them! 🙂
I have my yarn stored in totes. I got a whole lot from my mother in law and she gave me the totes, so I just added my yarn to them. 🙂
My yarn started off organized, because I didn’t have a big stash. But, the more I crochet, the more yarn I see that I want to turn into something beautiful so now my stash is becoming hard to manage. Some is in a box, some is in bags, some is in a hanging shoe organizer but that really doesn’t work well because it is so heavy it pulls off the rod daily, and then the yarn spills out of the openings onto the floor of my den. I have lots of projects lined up, but new ones always pop up and seem to jump the queue!
sort? yarn sorted? once, long ago in a galaxy far far away I had sorted yarn. now i keep it in plastic tubs by brand , more tubs for different weights and specialty and novelty yarns are all together in one. hooks in a stone ware vase and straight needles in another store ware vase and circulars in plastic bags. for a while everything is beautiful and there is peace in the animal kingdom……and then i look for a new project and i have to feel it all and see it all and…..
I guess I am just like everyone else that has a sickness for yarn. Wow, organized yarn! I do alot of knitting and crocheting for charity. Alot of the people in my community know that and by word of mouth yarn appears on my front closed in porch. Burial gowns, hats, blankets to the NICU – afghans every year for a scholarship – prayer shawls for my church – mittens and hats for the homeless shelter. If I get yarn I bring it to my attic and put it in the bin of its color – written on the front and sides of each bin. I try to go to my attic once a year to reorganize my stash, that would be super bowl Sunday. I open up all my bins and just stand and look at it for a few minutes then, I start to unload the bags of yarn recieved from so many generous people, and start to sort – it literally takes me all day. I would love to have a simpler solution to organizing my yarn.
I love to use the gift that God gave me to give to others because it gives me great pleasure. Sometimes I due confess that from one trip to the attic to the next my yarn seems to multiply 10x’s. Hard to keep up with. But I love the work that I do for good causes. 🙂 I think when I can afford it I have to start to buy myself all see through bins. Now, that is a great idea!!! Any other suggestions would be appreciated.
Organized Yarn?! Ha!
I have a LOT of yarn. Chunk and super chunky are in 1 bin, baby yarns in another 2 (pomp versus reg). The rest is acrylic medium weight separated by color and labelled. In addition, warm colors are in pink bins, cool colors in blue bins, neutrals in gray bins. The variegateds are in clear bins — one for baby colors, one for boyish (or either one) colors, one for girl colors.
I store my yarn in three of the 8 cube ClosetMaid cubicals stacked on top of each other. I organize my yarn by color, weight, and cotton, wool, acrylic, or specialty. (Thanks to my daughter and her boyfriend for putting the cubicals together for me!) I also have three crates on top of the cubicals and still have more yarn that doesn’t fit. Time for some stash busting!
I was forced to go verticle with my stash. I invested in several (plush toy hammocks) and hang my oodles of yarn from the ceiling! Of course I also have some by the couch, end of the dining table, back of my car, under the coffee table, drawer of the night stand, wrapped around the ceiling fan, in the antique peanut jar(for real), at my daughters house………..
I store mine in 5 different clear plastic tubs. They are organized by weight, starting with finger and lace in one all the way up to super bulky in the final bin. The bins get stacked floor to ceiling in the closet. Gets tough when I have to un-stack the whole tower to get the the bin in the bottom!
I have my yarn just stashed in boxes due to moving. Nothing to inventive, but then again my stash isn’t too big.
My hubby helped in organizing my yarn. We bought a clothing rack with extenders on both ends along with four closet sweater organizers. I sorted my yarn by color. Each section holds at least nine skeins of yarn. I also put one in the closet of my “craft room”. I need to buy another rack and some organizers. I love that I can see all of my yarn and that you can push it right up against the wall. More room for more yarn and crafting supplies! 🙂
QUESTION – is it worth it to stock up on yarn??/ I’m a newbie so I’ve been buying yarn per project and of course, have yarn for a few projects I haven’t yet gotten too. BUT when yarn goes on sale should I just buy it for a potental upcoming project?
Yes, yes and yes! You never know when it will be just right for a quick or big project!
I tend to buy a clearance yarn and closeout when I see it and I know I will use it. Which means the most common type I use. Or sometimes you just see it and a new project rears its head from the many patterns in my head, even though I won’t get to it until down the road. You will learn what to buy and when. I started with a tub from my grandma. Before long I was a yarn stashing pro.
I have 8 large plastic tubs and 2 cube shelves with cloth bins, all full of yarn! And there is NEVER enough yarn!
I put into large clear plastic storage bags so I can see them all
I store my “inspiration yarn” on my studio wall. It is in 9 large square baskets attached to the wall in a diamond formation. It is not only decorative but it’s hard to walk by and not grab some yarn and create!
I have shelves in a closet where I store most of my yarn. I would like to have a peg board on the door to store my threads, but right now they are in plastic bags “recycled” from sheet purchases.
My yarns are stored in clear plastic totes by color families. My problems is that some are in FL and some are in MN. Hooks and needles are divided between the two places and are stored in dresser drawers.
I have ALOT of yarn so I had to find a way to organize it all. All my yarn is stored in big stackable totes that are numbered. I take 1 skein of each color/brand and put a stringed tag on it with info on yarn: number of skeins, yardage per skein and the tote number it is stored in. Each single skein is stored in an underbed storage tote by brand. When I want to start an afghan project, I can open the underbed tote and see what colors I like together. Maybe do a swatch before I go to the tote/totes the rest of the yarn is stored in. Then I pull all skeins of the yarns I’ve chosen and put in big shopping bag. When the project is done I relabel the single skein and put all the yarn left from project away. System works great if you keep up with it.
By color and occasionally by type/brand.
I love to use clear plastic storage totes for my yarn storage. Then I can more easily see what I have! 😀
I put my balls of yarn on display in decorative bowl!
I have my yarn stored in cubbies, bins and closet organizers. I have so much yarn I can’t keep track if it all. I have it mostly sorted by fiber, but I have one bag with current projects that are usually all mixed.
Clear plastic tubs under the bed… Sorted by intended project, then weights for strays. I need a better method!
I have mine stored in clear plastic storage bags sorted by fiber and weight. Then those are stored in plastic tubs.
Works in progress are in tote bags.
I have a lot of yarn and remnants of yarn leftovers. I generally put them in large plastic see-through bins so that I can easily grab what I need for a new project. I can always find a use for bits and pieces to make a great ecclectic afghan or the like!!
I have 2 large under-bed storage bins that all of my leftover and unused yarn are stored in.
I store all my yarn in clear plastic bins. I sort by fiber type – all angora, mohair, wool, etc. All my scrap balls are stored together. And all of it is cataloged on my computer.
i store my yarn in storage tubs with a tight lid…However, when room gets tight, and I haven’t put the yarn into a ball yet, I put skeins into an old shoe divider..skeins fit perfectly and it hangs on the closet rod..out of sight!
I sort it by how much i have and then by color.. all in clear plastic bins.. I do this so when i look at my project and pick my colors out i know if i need to buy more yarn
I store all of mine in several different spaces. LOL! Small house! I have a book shelf full with skeins of yarn organized by color. I also have several cushioned collapsible decorative boxes that are full of smaller rolls and odds and ends. I have a closet hanging organizer (meant for sweaters) also full of yarn and last, but not least a ottoman with storage that is just over flowing. I try to organize by color, texture, and brand.
I love not only using my yarn but also love how beautiful yarn is! I try to find ways to organize it in shelves so it is visible and adds rainbows of color in my craft room (and even in my living room!). My overflow (which seems to be a common problem among yarn addicts!) is neatly organized in bins until I need it. I always sort my yarn by weight then fiber and keep brands together.
I have cube organizers and sort by color family when possible..and then there are the bags sitting everywhere….
Currently, my yarn is in 3 different containers, one being and small, round, green laundry basket that sits on the table next to my couch. The top of this table is also covered in yarn that is no where near organized. Yarn everywhere!
I keep my yarn somewhat unorganized, but safe. I have it in a very large, very chic storage ottoman and neither my kitten nor my children know its there! Plus, because the ottoman goes with my decor, I can have my yarn always accessible right out in the open with out any one else seeing it! (I may have to dig a little though to find exactly what I’m looking for, but I don’t mind)
In underbed storage bins sorted by fiber content.
The majority of my yarn is stored in those hanging cloth shelf units. I store my scrap yarn (all those little balls) in an over-the-door shoe organizer by color.
I have my yarn stored in 12 see through plastic tubs. I need to go thru & sort them by types.
I use the food saver bags to keep the yarn for different projects separate and the fabric shopping bags for what I’m currently working on.
I sort by weight and then by color. I use large clear plastic bags. Lately, when I finish a project I donate the left over yarn to my neighbor who makes preemie and chemo hats. This helps to keep my stash more manageable.
I store new skeins in clear totes on shelving so I can “see” what I have. Yarn bought for specific projects is stored in clear totes with the pattern. Yarn scraps are stored in totes by weight. Of course, there is probably a bag of new, just couldn’t resist it, yarn hidden in the closet.
Large clear plastic bags that zip and have handles.
My yarn is everywhere I have a few milk crates full in my closet some bags full all around the house I think some has even managed to make it in to laundry baskets, not counting the yarn my animals steal and leave everywhere
I have an IKEA Expedit shelving unit, which gives me 16 large cubbies to store yarn in. I organize them by fiber and by weight, so for example one cubby is for cotton worsted, one for wool DK, etc.
I have a stacking cart right now that stores some of my yarn. When I get my craft room fixed up, I want to use crates as will be easier to see and use the cart for projects only.
In my new house, my husband conceded to letting the HUGE “linen closet” in our hallway become the yarn closet. It’s all organized by color. When open the doors, it’s like a rainbow of fiber! Love it! I also have a couple small storage cubes in there with remnants I will find a use for… some day!
I have all mine on shelves by weight and color. Keeping like yarns together really helps when starting a project!
Store my yarn, by weight/color, I have a small stash, so I rotated cardboard box, like a cubbie, and decorated cardboard box, with scrap wrapping paper. For my crochet hooks/knitting needles I have pencil cases, and misc stuff, like velcro, snaps, zippers, I have in giant ziplock bag. For big current projects like afghans, I keep in space saver bags.
I had been storing mine in individual plastic shopping bags divided by project. I’ve now switch to plastic tubs, some small ones in the little food storage containers available at the grocery store. I still have some older projects in bags, but I’m working on it!!
Organize?! LoL…I have a storage bench that I open, add to the jumble, and pretend I know EXACTLY what & how much I have. The yarn my husband sees is stored neatly in a rolling storage case that holds my tools of the trade & 3-4 skeins of ‘current’ projects. It can be taken with me or stored as necessary.
I use the translucent Sterilite buckets from Walmart — they range in size some. I like the ones with the latches for a secure closure.
My yarn is sorted by use: sock yarns, lace yarns, dishcloth cotton, novelty yarns, spinning fiber, and then I’ve got a couple buckets of the heavier yarns all mashed together.
I keep my stash updated on Ravelry as much as possible, so I can “browse” my stash from my computer. Then, when I find what I want to use, it’s just a matter of locating which bucket it’s stored in.
My wife’s stash is in an IKEA Expedit, in baskets. But we live in Arizona where haboobs happen every summer (during monsoon season) and the rest of the year dust is still pretty prevalent. So, I’ve started putting her yarns in freezer-strength Ziploc bags — she can still see the yarn, after she wipes the layer of dust off the bag!
My wife wants to make me a PVC frame which will hold my buckets of yarn. The benefit is that i won’t have to lift all the buckets on top of the bottom one to get to it!
Anne,
I use cubed shaped bins that are stacked like shelves. Then I organize them by new, used, or balled. You can see the colors easily, and I know how much of colors I have. I have set dedicated to worsted and a set dedicated to specialty yarns! Good luck to everyone!!!
I store my extra yarn in a large packing box in my closet. Then I also use recycled kitty litter clear plastic tubs to store project yarn together. I have a bunch of clear plastic ice cream containers I used to store small skeins and balls that I use in my plastic canvas projects. I also use plastic tote bags to hold yarn and projects. The last thing I have is 3 of the multi yarn holders for projects.
I have office file boxes (the collapsible type) stacked on their side for yarn, thread, and one for wire. A box of completed projects on top; and three storage bins filled with plastic grocery bags ready to be made into plarn. Another space is set aside for hooks and other crochet necessities. And If I have to take a project or two or three on the road, I just grab one of the grocery bags and put the yarn and project in it. Keeps the yarn neat and the projects separated.
I am lucky to have a walk in hall closet with drawers – 9 drawers! the yarns are sorted into drawers by fibre content & weight. Then in my room — I have yarn in baskets sorted by project, with the necessary needles etc in each basket so I can just grab one to work on something. I have had them in plastic stacking drawers & have a huge stash in a fabric pop-up bag designed for collecting leaves in the yard! yes I have THAT much yarn stash!
I have my yarn sorted by color, then by thickness. I have repurposed a hutch to organize it all, as it has a couple of shelves, one big tabletop of just the right size to take photos of finished projects and display them and a drawer to hide all the hooks, needles, hoops, looms, scissors and small etc. that always seem to find a home in a crafters stash.
I store my yarn by type & fiber in spacebags & freezer bags, all shoved carefully into an old wardrobe 🙂
I organize by projects. Currant projects are kept in individual containers in overhead storage in the living room of our motorhome. Other projects are in containers and then stored clear bins in the storage area under our motorhome. Yarn not ear marked for projects are in yet another clear bin under the motorhome. We are 40ft long but storage is still at a premium so I have to get creative.
I store mine in large zip lock bags with the lable so I can see what I have on hand. These are stored in plastic bins by colors.
I have a lot of vintage thread and yarn. I keep the thread in one clear tub and the yarn in another. I also have yarn on spools, and they are in their own tub. The feathers sorted out by type, ie baby, fingering, four ply etc. Scraps are all kept together as well. Everything gets used. I also have a tub for holiday yarns/threads.
I have my yarn by brand in milk crates stack like shelves in my craft room. It is over flowing into boxes stacked on the floor in front!
My studio is also a display place for visitors, so I have a converted garage that has steel shelving on wheels… 10 steels uprights have 6 shelves per unit. There is fabric on 3 of them, but the rest have yarn. I keep the yarn in bags (with holes punched liberally for breathing) and stack by type. Sorting by colour is less important than type by, for me. The yarn on cones just stand, like soldiers side by side on one of the narrow steel shelves. I use wicker baskets to hold yarn t(again by type) that doesn’t happen to come in wrappers. My fleece and spinning fibres are all there too! I like it and it works for me… I’m not patient when I want to find something fast for a project.
I have a method to my madness. Some yarn is in totes and some in a closet but I have it sorted by the ones I am most likely to use first. So the yarn I love but don’t have any idea what to make with it yet, it goes in the tote. If I have some ideas or I know I want to make something with it very soon then it goes into the closet for easier access.
My husband made me a yarn bin that I store my yarn in. It is organized by project and I store all of my scrap yarn in a basket.
Bags, boxes and tubs. I really need to do a better job though. My system is currently lacking order and I’ve totally lost track of what I have.
I don’t have much yarn to have it organized. I just
Learned to crochet by my mom in law. & instantly
Addicted, I’m usually just sew, it’s my passion! But
I love to crochet & truly excited to Start my first real
Project& hope to learn how to knit soon. Like m
My grandma use too. I will roll it into a ball like she d
Did & store them in containers, but would love to
Find an old fashion sewing wood stand sewing/ crocheting
Box stand (?) I loved my grandmas & I’m into old
Rustic/ antique furniture & fixtures
i organize it by color in clear plastic bags and bins
ziplock bags, they make some pretty big ones!
Mine’s in canvas containers in a bookcase. It’s 2×4 and I have 4 boxes for yarn, the other 4 spaces have cross stitching or assorted supplies.
I have large clear storage bins… My supply is divided by type: 4 ply, 3 ply, baby, fancy and thread… Since I have the most in 4 ply, it is divided by color… I also use the clear storage bins to store finished product until needed; I drop several dryer sheets in each bin to remove some of that new yarn smell… The bins keep the yarn dust free…
In a huge 31 bag at the moment – looking to reorganize my craft room and possibly do a peg board wall.
I bought one of those nice put-it-together-yourself white cupboards with doors for my yarn storage. When I finished sorting by fiber and sometimes by brand, and then color, about half my yarn fit in the cupboard. So I had to re-sort and put the sock yarn, baby yarn, special handspun yarns, and “boutique” yarns in the cupboard. The rest is mostly RHSS and similar worsted weight yarn which is sorted into several plastic tubs by color “families”: lots of shades of blue, pink/yellow, red/white/navy blue, black/white, forest colors/brown/greens, and variegated worsted yarn. In any case, I need more uniform storage and a larger room!!
Oh, and then there is all the cotton yarn that needs its own containers, to sort by color and a place to put the cones.
Small amounts of leftover yarns just get rolled into a ball and put into a pretty basket. That is the only prt of my stash that looks pretty.
I have painstakingly sorted yarn by color and placed like skeins in plastic covered tubs in one of
my attic spaces. I have at least 12 maybe more of the largest tubs full. Each tub is labeled with the color and number inside. As I remove skeins I change the number on the outside. A couple of years ago, knowing my husband was getting ready to retire, I started aquiring yarn each week on sale or with weekly coupons.
I store my yarn in cloth bags, that way when searching for yarn for another project, it’s like a treat or I’ve gone shopping!!
I have a full closet of shelves and they are organized by brand, weight, fiber, and color in that order with the exception being my handspun yarns which are kept together.
I attached hooks to the beams in my cellar’s ceiling and hung shower curtain rods from them. I then got some trouser hangers, the ones with the built in clothes pin. I bought the large 2.5 gallon zip close storage bags andn put my yarn in them, sorted by color. I then clipped the hangers to the storage bags and hung the hangers on the shower curtain rod. Now I can see exactly what I have.
Organize? Ahahaha…you’re kidding, right? lol
I have several of the Closet Maid Cabinets that you put the soft bins in [Target and Wal-Mart]. I get the ones that hold 8 bins have them standing upright. I can put at least 10 skeins in each bin, so I can separate by project or color. 1 cabinet would then hold 80 skeins.
As many as I can, I put in shoe “shelves”, the square cubbies, in the closet of my sewing room. The rest are stored in clear boxes by weight.
I use an over-the-door shoe rack with the clear pockets for my needles and crochet hooks. They are organized by size and it’s a breeze to find what I need when I need it!
(I’m a retired teacher and we used these for flash cards, incentive charts, assignments, etc so it just popped in my head to use them for needles and hooks too.)
I store my yarn in clear plastic bins or bags. My yarn stash is organized to which projects I want to work on next. 🙂
I organize by color – in clear containers so I can let the colors inspire me to create. 🙂
My yarn is in ziploc bags, then in boxes. It’s separated hierarchically: weight, fiber, then color .
My yarn is in a big box, no system.
By color & brand in plastic bins and decorative Lane trunks. I keep a Yarn Inventory spreadsheet so I know if I have enough yarn to finish a project.
I have stacks of plastic drawers. I sort my yarns by color, accumulating various weights.
Specialty yarns get a drawer of their own.
I stored in tubes until recently I acquired a book case from my daughter and had my husband turn it on its side and made cubies so I now can see better what I have!
Mine is stored in clear plastic containers by color. If I’m using it, it’s in a basket right next to the couch.
My yarn is in various totes and boxes on my living room. Not Betty organized but its easily accessible to me but also to my cat. He constantly steals skeins or cut pieces, I find them under the couch, in the playroom or under my clawfoot tub lol. I need to find something tall and thin with deep shelves to keep him out and so I have everything close at hand. Let the search continue lol
I store my yarn in plastic totes. When I’m using it I put it in reusable grocery bag.
My yarn has grown & grown. I used to have it in so many different bags in too many places until I found some awesome ‘cubes.’ They are a shelving unit that has 9 square cubes for shelves. I have 2 units & haves each cube filled with a different color. Some red, some blue, etc. One cube has my buttons, beads, ribbon etc. One cube has my threads & cross stitch colors. Then a final one has some of my more frequent books. It’s completely wonderful!
I crochet, weave, spin, knit, etc. So I have several different methods for storing my yarns. I have a wall of cabinets with yarns sorted by use- fiber-weight-andcolor. I also have various large plastic covered tubs for yarns not needed as often. I also have several woven baskets that I periodically fill with different yarns and spread around the house as inspiration and a reminder of what I have onhand. By choosing yarn for the baskets, I am given an opportunity to go through my stash and weed out what I no longer need (which are given to various outreaches and charities). I often use these baskets of colorful yarns as centerpieces instead of a potted plant or vase of fresh flowers. They brighten the area, boost my creativity and give me an excuse to fondle fiber.
I will admit it is completely unorganized. I have a huge tub filled, some in a good size plastic cooler bag, lots in a cute wooden container labeled “Potatoes” and the rest in various stages of use throughout my home. As long as I know where it is and have plenty just in case, I am happy and content.
I have an old dresser (1 child until empty nest) that have baskets of the different types of yarn I use most. Sock, cotton, DK, wool for felting, and misc. The top drawer is for tools, and small bits of leftover yarn. I have my pattern books on top. Well, that is when I’m all straightened up.
I store my yarn in tubs by color.
I store my yarn in plastic tubs as well as in my closets.
The arn and threads are basicall organized in large, clear plastic containers and sorted by yarn weight and fiber, such as cotton or acrylic. The crochet threads are sorted by weight into 2 large apple boxes and then, scrap yarns are in aonther container, sport weight yarn has a box and also in a closet, and then, I am not sure. There is also a set of baskets on a stair landing with more crochet thread…..
It is much fun. Much of the yarns are for charity knitting, the crochet thread for gifts and personal projects.
I use Zip lock type clear plastic bags, I get them in the XL (10 gal) size, they hold quite a bit of yarn, and if you need something out of the bag they are easy to get the excess air out (I sit on them) and reseal and stack fairly well as they have squared bottom, I live in an area that has a lot of insects and high humidity so this keeps my stash bug proof and free of musky odors. I have my stash on a wall in my closet with the labels of the yarn showing so I know what I have where, I sort by color and type, meaning I have wool in one, acrylic mixes in another, ribbon type separated, not by color always but by type and all of my excess balls in another till I have enough to do a scrap type blankie or hat for donation.
a yarn drum from my mother-in-law holds current project yarn, a small bin for UFOs, large michaels bag for “i may need these soon” yarns, i large bin for my chunky & fancy yarns in the closet, two wrapping paper bins for skeins of yarn. then i use ziploc bags and brown lunch sacks for small balls of yarn and project organization… it’s a lot! and i have another pouch for the labels from the skeins of yarn so i can reference what i used on what projects
I have it stored in three tall shelving units, it is organized by colors.
I store by weight, then color. Not real worried about yarn content, I like to mix it up now and then. I got those things you hang in your closet on the rod, that expand to make “shelves”. It’s great!! I can see everything right away when I’m starting a project!
An old dresser, under the bed bins, pretty hat boxes. I sort by type and weight. Such as all wool, sock, baby, holiday etc….
I use the hanging cloth cubbies shoe storage and sweater storage shelves I purchased at Home Depot and Lowe’s. They are just deep enough and wide enough to carry enough yarn for a project or more. I also use cedar boards in my closet to keep everything fresh and moth free. The closet is in the bedroom of my youngest child who is out of the nest and in college out of town! The closet keeps the yarn dust free as well and since the organizers are clear, it is easy to see every color. I also use the over the door jewelry hangers with the pockets for storing beads and buttons and other embellishments. They are also perfect for that last bit if scrap yarn which may be needed later or used in scrap project or for repairs. (thankfully no repairs needed yet)
Since I just started crocheting again after 30 years, I really haven’t organized my yarn that well. I have it sorted by color and kinds of yarn and then put into grocery store recycling
bags. The projects I’m working on are stored in a 31 bag. It isn’t the best organization but
at least it’s stored in something until I can organize my craft room.
I sort by 1.fiber 2.color 3.length all in stack clear plastic bins.
Honestly, as much as I try there is no way to organize my yarn. I try to organize it by color and size but I have SO MUCH it is not possible. I get it all put away, then I start a project and it all comes out littles bits at a time.
I store my yarn by project. I have all my yarn in plastic bags, and then they are in plastic tubs. Many plastic tubs!
I organize mine mainly by color. Then if I need a certain color for a project, I can find it more quickly. Within the colors, I try to keep similar weights together. These are all in clear plastic bins so I can see what’s what.
I store mine according to fiber, weight and color.
When a computer paper order comes in to the office I nab the empty boxes. They hold quit a bit of yarn that can be organized by type and colour and best of all they stack very nicely & can be hidden away at the back of a closet.
I have my yarn in large totes. It is organized by pastels, darker colors, misc. smaller skeins. I also have a tote with Christmas colors. Kay
Sorted first according to weight, then by fiber (natural or man-made), then by color.
I recently purchased some of those hanging shoe organizers for the closet and stuffed a few skeins per opening. It isn’t too heavy and fits nicely into the craft closet.
i have two bins. One big plastic tub, holding all full skiens. Matching dyelots/yarn types are bagged together. Wools are sealed to protect against moths. (For example: one bag with two skeins cascade 220, another larger bag with 2lbs Cot N Soft) FIber is bagged and labled to type. All bags are aired out now and then.
The second bin has three drawers- top/smallest drawer holds all yarn ends/bits, with wools kept in a bag. Middle drawer holds crochet thread and larger partial skeins. Wools kept in a bag.
Bottom drawer is my queue of projects. It has a half done shawl, two skeins of sock yarn I’m going to cast on next, and my bag of partial balls of sock yarn for my hexipuff quilt.
weee 🙂
I keep my yarn organized by type (cotton, acrylic, bamboo,…) in clear drawers that are in “Plastic cabinets.”
I sort my yarn by fiber content and in plastic containers with tight lids to keep out anything including my cat who loves to unwind wool and alpaca yarns. Baby yarn is in a separate bin.
I try to keep my yarn sorted by color and type. Most of my worsted weight is stood up on ends in clear plastic tubs. My chunky yarn is in old wooden crates. my light weight yarn is in another plastic tote and my specialty yarns are all in a big round basket. Some day I hope to have a better system, but it works for me for now.
I don’t buy yarn until I need it, so a lot of organizing isn’t necessary. I have left overs in drawers.
I am just teaching myself to crochet, and so far anytime I purchase some yarn I try to make something simple like dish cloths, ear warmers and scarves. I rarely have any yarn to organize.
I guess there is always tomorrow and more yarn!
I have my larger skeins of yarn and some cones stored in very big zippy bags. The smaller skeins I have in the sweater-sized bags that you roll up and squish all the air out.
About 10 years ago I bought a long Sears-made chest of drawers. That worked for awhile (I sort by color) but eventually I had to expand using clear plastic stackable drawers – these I use to sort by yarn type (alpaca, cotton, fancy, etc). Since I still didn’t have enough storage (keep buying) I supplement with my basket collection LOL
I store mine by brand in clear Rubbermaid containers.
I have my yarn stored in round stack cubbies I made from sonotubes I bought at the home improvement center. Yarn is stored by size then type. The sonotubes come in different diameters, they are cut down to 8″ -12″ deep, spray painted white and stacked and tacked together, the deepest ones on the bottom and the smaller to the top. It takes up an 8×8 wall in my craft room. This is supplemented by a cubbie unit bought at IKEA that has a work desk attached to it. Overflow or partial items are stored in clear plastic bins
Now that my husband and I live in an RV so that we can be close to our ministry space is even more at a premium. Yarn that is for larger and or future projects is stored in plstic tubs at the chapel. Things that I do on a regular basis or small projects is stored in plastic zipper bags that my mom saves for me when she buys new sheet sets. They are stored by yarn type and projects so it is easy to find what I am wanting to work on.
with great difficulty…but usually I sort the small leftovers and place them into ziplock bags for touques…then the rest is sorted into thrifty shopping bags according to size of skeins….I tried sorting by color then realized that my projects are all colors….Have a great day…
in totes by color
I store my yarn in three drawer plastic units on wheels so that i can move them where I need them. When I have a short amount of yarn, I wind it up on an empty toilet paper core. Depending on the amount left, I can get two colors ob one roll.
I try not to buy yarn until I have a project that I want to make up. So, I “store” by project. I do buy 100% wool yarn when I find it on sale & store it together to make up felted purses.
I keep my yarn in clear plastic shoe boxes stacked on a bookcase, sorted by weight and color. Being able to see into the end of the box makes it easy to find what I need.
Right now all of my yarns is in storage bins and under my end table. I have plans to enclose our front porch and I’m thinking some kind of storage system or just a hanging shoe storage.
I don’t really have a system for organizing my yarn. There’s a wheeled project bag by my chair with knitting needles and crochet hooks and random balls of yarn. I also have shopping bags stashed in various places throughout the house-some on my desk, some by my wardrobe…a few here, a few there. And there’s a big buffalo fiber bag I crocheted with some yarn in it…and a box with some random balls of yarn that a friend gave me, and a bag of more random yarn that my mom gave me…I sure could use something to organize it all. I saw a sweater stacker that goes on a closet rod the other day that looked promising but I don’t know if it’s big enough and somehow I doubt it would keep the yarn dust and scent free-I do have a lot of yarn and would love to have it all in one location where I know it will stay clean and dry until I’m ready to do something with it.
I have yarn in an old dresser with one drawer for “fun yarn” one for leftovers, one for baby yarn, and the rest by weight. Yarn ear marked for a particular project is in project bags ( reusable grocery bags) with the patterns, lined up on the top.
I store my yarn several different ways. For Christmas my favorite gift was a storage unit from Ikea. It consists of 25 cubbies that are chock full of yarn, mostly sorted by color. I have several bins of separated into cotton, thread, sock yarn and remnants. I am a yarnaholic and cannot pass up a coupon or sale at my favorite yarn stores.
I store my yarn in totes to keep them dust free. organizing by color and type.
I bought an organizer from Ikea, it has 16 cubbies. I had to buy boxes to go in each cubby because my kitten is as much of a fan of yarn as I am. I currently have it sorted by colour, but have decided that one weekend I will sort it by weight instead. Also, the boxes have holes in them instead of handles and I need to tape those up cause the kitten keeps pulling the yarn through them 🙂
My yarn mostly lives in plastic totes. Current projects have either their own basket or bag.
I have sorted it by color, with special categories for baby, Homespun, Pound of Love, specialty yarns. The go into clear plastic bins so I can see them. My WIPs go into ziploc type bags, then into a bin in the closet, with the wrappers from the yarn & a copy of the pattern. Finished projects are also placed in ziploc bags (the larger storage type I get at the dollar store). I add a dryer sheet and stash then in bins in the closet too. This way I can instantly see what I have on hand, quickly grab a WIP and a hook for traveling, and have instant gifts that smell fresh and clean.
the inventory i’m. Most likely to use is in hanging shelves in my closet. I also have other yarn that is in these nice boxes tat they used at the Hallmark shop next to where i work, they’re just. The right size for two layers of yarn. My balls of scrap I try to keep in clear containers so I can see what i have easily. And then there is still stuff in bags that need put away!
I leave m y yarn in the bags from the store by projects. and left over yarn in but into a bin i have for making scrap blankets and or granny squares. When this bin is full I use this, and give the project to “Operation Linus”.
I store my yarn, by weight/type, in clear plastic zip bags in our basement. Yarn that is being used for a current project is kept in a tote bag in the corner of my bedroom.
I used to have it all over the House, could never find the colors I needed. So one day at work I found tall rectangle Boxes .I organized them by color. I placed them in a bookshelf . Now I have a great overlook of all my colors. And I recycled Boxes at the same time
It’s in lots of different bins right now! Wish it was organized differently but I’m tight on space!
Right now I have my leftover in a crochet container because I’am in the proses of moving do to my fiance’s job and also i’am disable so it easier for me
Thanks for the opportunity
Howdy! This is my first visit to your blog!
We are a team of volunteers and starting a new project in a community in the
same niche. Your blog provided us useful information to work
on. You have done a wonderful job!
I store my yarn in tote bags, according to projects I am working on and one in the car just in case of traffic or an unknown circumstance that would have me sitting still….my peace.
I keep my yarn in rubber made storage containers on wheels. They are opaque so that I can see which container to go through before I buy any yarn.
