Chunky Yarn. Bulky Yarn. Super Bulky Yarn.
There is a love hate relationship with chunky yarn in the knitting world: Either you love it or you hate it. Some seasoned knitters will scoff at a super bulky weight yarn saying it doesn’t require much skill, or isn’t fancy enough. BAH! Chunky yarn is fabulous for so many reasons!
Whether you are someone who wants to learn how to knit, or a seasoned knitter who needs a quick finished object, these yarns are great choices. Chunky yarns work up faster, so you’ll be able to take a ball of yarn and a chunky knit hat pattern and get a finished result in no time at all. Someone learning to knit could use a chunky scarf knitting pattern and finish it with confidence, as the stitches will be easy to see and the much less fussy to manage.
The free knitting patterns for chunky yarn that I’ve collected here are all simple patterns that let the beauty and simplicity of the yarn be the star. Complicated stitches done with chunky yarn tend to lose their definition, so simple stitches are key to working with chunky yarn patterns. You can knit anything with chunky yarns, from simple boot cuffs to big, extra comfy, squishy knit blankets.

I like the chucky knits–they are stylish and quick!
I love the chunky knitting trend. Not only do some of these projects take less time, but the knitting patterns are adorable! They look so much cozier even if they do take less skill and aren’t quite as fancy. As a beginner knitter, this suits me just fine. I can’t wait to try #2 and #5!
Just looking at the pictures warms me up. I am in love with the different scarf options and the bubblegum hat is adorable. This seems like a great mother-daughter craft idea. I can’t wait to give it a try!
I love the chunky yarns. I’m having a horrible time trying to find a pattern for a sweater for my Bernat #6 Super chunky yarn and I REALLY want to make a nice comfy over-sized sweater with it. I’m not a experienced knitter so I am hesitant to try to adjust patterns to fit….primarily where the increases are concerned. If anyone knows of a simple pattern that is good for a new knitter…please point me to it.
