Survey Results: Are YOU a Yarn Hoarder?

May 6, 2013 by AllFreeCrochetAfghanPatterns

A recent survey conducted by AllFreeCrochetAfghanPatterns reveals interests and habits of crocheters who subscribe to Laying It All Out, AllFreeCrochetAfghanPattern’s free email newsletter. This survey was aimed to help us learn more about our readers’ wants and needs as well as their preferences when it comes to the art of crocheting afghans.

If you found a $100 bill on the ground, what would you do? 50.7% of Laying It All Out readers said they would put it in the bank, but the next top answer (20.1%) was to spend the $100 all on yarn. Speaking of buying yarn, we asked if our readers considered themselves yarn hoarders and 40.5% said no. However, 32.7% admitted to being yarn hoarders and 26.7% said that they were “maybe” yarn hoarders. Our readers love their yarn and they aren’t afraid of buying as much as they need.

Out of the 5,658 respondents to AllFreeCrochetAfghanPatterns’s survey, the majority were female crocheters over the age of 60 who crochet daily, and have known how to crochet since they were 18 years old or younger. Most of our readers were taught how to crochet buy a family member (50.4%) and most say that crocheting is a relaxing hobby (69.3%). Many crocheters crochet for charity, but just how many of our readers do? 51.3% of the survey responders crochet for charity which is wonderful to hear.

Crochet SurveyWhen it comes to choosing yarn, the majority of AllFreeCrochetAfghanPattern readers (54.8%) enjoy working Red Heart Yarn and the yarn weight of choice is worsted weight (76.9%). When asked what type of hook they couldn’t live without, the favorite was the H/8 or 5 mm hook (31.4%) which works well with worsted weight yarn. Our readers may be impulsive buyers since 52.9% said they buy yarn whenever they see yarn they want to add to their stash, not just when they have a specific project in mind (33.2%).

Key findings of the survey include:

Favorite types of afghans:
41.3%– Baby Blankets
34.4%– Throws
26.8%– Granny Square Afghans
24.6% – Ripple Afghans

– Social Media Use:

Finally, we asked our survey takers if they had any suggestions for improvement. Here is what a few readers had to say about the AllFreeCrochetAfghanPattern’s newsletter, Laying It All Out:

“It is great just the way it is. I like the choice, the colored photos and instructions how to make, plus I can pin it to my Pinterest account if I don’t want to take the time to copy now! “

“I know choices are good, but sometimes I feel that there are too many great patterns to choose from. (That is probably not a bad thing).”

“Have subscribers show-off their projects from the patterns placed in your newsletters.”

“I would like to see more advanced crochet patterns. I like to do challenging projects.”

“I think you are doing a great job and I enjoy a lot your newsletter. Thanks!”
