You’re probably asking yourself, “What is a Niddy Noddy?” I certainly had never heard of one until I watched the Niddy Noddy tutorials on AllFreeKnitting. It’s a nifty contraption that you can use to create a skein of yarn. Why wind a skein of yarn? Well for one thing, you’ll have less of a mess when trying to knit. But another reason you may want to wind a skein of yarn, rather create a ball or hank, is so you can dye it. I’ve also seen some yarn shops display their yarn in skeins to show off all of the color and fiber possibilities.
Rebecca Roush from ChemKnits took the time to create her own Niddy Noddy. You can put together your very own at home with some PVC piping and connectors. This is definitely cheaper than if you were to buy a fancy wooden one. Follow Rebecca’s tutorial on How to Make a Niddy Noddy. And then follow it up with a lesson on how to wind a skein of yarn using it.
How do you wind your yarn?

Maybe it’s just me, but this seems clunky and time consuming…and do you have to leave it on the Niddy Noddy…because she didn’t show how to remove it and make it into a finished skein. But then I buy yarn that comes in a pull skein…if I have to wind yarn (say for a bobbin), I can leave a center pull strand which I hold with my thumb, winding the yarn around my fingers till it becomes larger enought to remove and finish winding.
when i wind yarn, it’s from a hank … that i spread around a swift and wound into a skein with a yarn winder. if i want to split a skein, i wind it using the yarn winder and if i want to wind a small amount, i wind a center pull ball around two fingers. easy peasy. the niddy noddy is a neat gadget for yarn dyers …
Fantastic . Thank you that I learned today something new
Not for me to much time.
you could use hot water pipes, the smaller ones I guess tit will be a bit neater
I spin my own yarn. After I get the bobbin filled, I use the Niddy Noddy to form skeins of yarn before the final steps of rinsing, whacking, hanging to dry and then winding it into a cake(using a cake winder).
