Though not very creative, I organize my yarn using the plastic bags from comforters that we bought for our beds. They are big enough to hold all the yarn for a single project (I tend to make afghans), they have a zipper, and they keep the yarn clean. In addition, it is very clear to my kids that this is Mommy’s yarn. 🙂
I have mine yarn seperated by fiber: cotton, acrylic, sock yarn, and wool and wool blends. I keep the yarn in plastic totes and put a bar of lavendar soap in a ziploc bag with a hole in it in the wool and wool blends totes. I also have all of my stash listed on Ravelry with pictures.
I am not very proficient at organizing my stash. I try to keep it organized by weigh and color, i.e. baby yarn, worsted weight, bulky weight and then try to keep like colors together. Most of the time it gets away from me though especially when I have to “sneak” yarn into my stash so my husband doesn’t know I bought “more yarn”
currently I have my yarn organized in 2 – 9 cube organizers and about 20 plastic totes, in buckets all aound the house and in re-useable shopping bags….It has taken over my house :S
Organized? LOL Well if you want to call this organization. I have yarn sorted into dresser drawers, plastic zip bags, cardboard boxes, & cloth grocery totes.
I separate my yarn by colour. I find that when I crochet it is usually colour that is my first thought. I also separate my yarn by projects. I keep all the yarn that goes for a specific project in a bag so that it is easy for me to find. Also, I have a large wooden chest which hold excess yarn. I have the yarn separated in bags by the colour and style.
I use stackable storage carts with drawers. I can keep brands of yarn separate and have drawers for those small scrap balls.
I organize my yarns by weights. Have crochet threads in clear plastic containers. Other yarns are on what I call open-box shelving .. 2 squares beside each other, 3 going up. Of course there are some yarns that are in fabric totes (here & there – LOL).
I use Banker’s Boxes, I have them organized by yarn type, colors, etc. You can write on the outside of the box whats in the box and they stack very well, makes it easy to find what you are looking for.
I have extra yarn for current projects in some large decorative containers in my livingroom. This way I don’t have to go down to the basement for another ball. I keep the rest of my stash and supplies in clear totes in the basement.
I keep projects in separate canvas bags. I have everything I need in each bag so I can grab and go.
I have my yarn stashed in a foot locker, plastic storage bins, art bin yarn bags for projects that i’m working on, art bin super satchels for small projects, hanging three tier clothes storage, under the bed storage bags, an extra large rubber beach bag and at the moment a couple Walmart cloth grocery bags. I have it separated by brand and types.
I store my yarn in clear totes, organizes by colors.
I organize my yarn according to the project they go to. Extra yarn is in notes according to weight, so its easy when I want to make a project from scraps.
I keep all my wool yarns in a storage bench that can be used as seating. It’s always right next to me. Also keep my sock yarns in there as well. I keep all fun yarns in one plastic bin and so on and so forth. I have enough yarn to start a little store. But as you all know, when starting a new project, new yarn is always needed!!
*meant to type totes not notes, gotta love auto correct on phones.
I use a sweater hanger that hangs from a closet pole. I separate by color mostly and I can see at a glance what I have.
Organized yarn is an oxymoron. Unless one works in a yarn store, where you Have to keep it organized, I think it’s futile. Mine is in a storage unit at the moment, will need to organize new home before trying to bring in the yarn. Maybe I’ll just rent a Pod to put it all in….
Totes, totes and more totes!
I have clear tubs lining the walls of my closet. Each tub contains different colors/shades of same color. I also have one for unfinished projects. Works well for me.
I just keep all my yarn in a big basket, although it is running over, lol
I keep mine seperated by fiber, stored in large plastic storage bags. I have opked a few holes in so the yarn can breathe. I have it labeled so I can decide what I wanna do, grab the right yarn. Then put it along with everything else in one of my Trillion tote bags and keep beside my chair, or in the car.
I do wish that I was more organized… i do use the plastic comforter things like someone said earlier to store yarn…as well as totes and such…unfortunately there is no rhyme or reason to it… perhaps that will be part of my spring clean-up this year.
I have my yarn stored in plastic totes, bags that comforters come in, and a storage bench. I have a lot of yarn.
I have my yarn in an old steam truck and in plastic bags.
I have my knitting needles in a Longaberger ice bucket basket in their packages in size order
I keep my yarn in 18 gallon totes, separated by fiber, then color. Those I am currently using for projects I keep in the reusable grocery bags, or my carryall.
I keep my yarn in clear tubs in our storage shed. It’s organized by brand and type, so I can easily see how much I have for any project I may have in mind. But in spite of this I somehow always need to buy more yarn. 🙂
At the moment the yarn for specific projects is stored in baskets…a seperate basket for each project I have going. The rest (my stash) is stored in rubbermaid-type containers. It’s really not as organized as I would like within those containers though.
To keep my sanity intact when looking in my stash for a particular type of yarn, I use clear storage bins and label each with what kind of yarn is in it…ie: baby yarn. It saves me a lot of time.
Have all of my “nice” yarn organized in seperate bags-along with the intended pattern, if there is one. I have all of my “utility” yarn in a large pop-up laundry hamper. I would love to have a system that allowed me to sort everything in a more efficient manner.
I have so much yarn, it’s hard to organize, but machine knitting cones are on shelves, hand knitting and crochet yarn/thread is in plastic containers, and WIPs are in coffee cans in totes by my chair.
I keep my yarn stored in my craft closet in totes and plastic bins.
I have so much yarn that I haven’t figured out an entire organization system for it. I have many, many totes of yarn sorted by color. Yarn that I’ve purchased for smaller projects I keep in clear containers in a wall cubby unit so I can see & grab whatever I wish. Of course I also have several tote bags that have projects in them. I think I have a yarn addiction!!!
Each project has it’s special bag so I can pick and take with me the project I am in the mood for. Yarn stash is kept in storage containers. Try to keep colors together than types.
I have yarn under my bed, in the closets, in the garage and in the basement. It’s sorted by type & weight in plastic bags & bins and in suitcases in the closet. It’s a very good thing I live alone, I don’t know anyone who would put up with my “stash”>
Well, since I quite work (I worked @ home), I’ve put my file drawers to a good use, storing yarn. Then usually the projects I have seperated in gallon ziplock bags that way I can grab & go out the door quickly & my things stay clean.
I organize according to what i buy it for. I have a bin for socks, a bin for winter items (hats, mittens, scarves), a bin for afghans, etc. Then, within the bins I have them organized by fiber.
I have my cotton yarns in pull out drawers . And all other types of yarn are in totes with lids. Scraps of odds and ends are in a big zip lock bag.
I was able to buy a shelving unit from craft store that was remodeling so I was able to sort all my yarn which helps me to stay somewhat organized.
I keep my yarn in a big bag that has separate compartments in it! When I am crocheting, knitting, I put my yarn in a magazine rack so it doesn’t roll all over the place. Also, by using this rack, I don’t have to make a ball, just pull it from the end!
I keep my yarn in totes right now, but that’s not really working so I want to try stackable drawers. I can also maybe sort by size if I do that.
I keep all my yarn in those plastic drawers and clear totes. But, I sort the afghan yarn by colors to go in the afghan. I seldom only use me color, so I organize the colors and put them into drawers by afghan. Then when I am ready to start a new one I just remove all the yarn from that drawer, clearing the space to buy more! My yarns that are more expensive I keep in totes and in my cedar and stink wood chests. Yarn that I buy specifically for baby items are stored in individual totes by color.
I organize my yarn in wire racks and my recycle grocery bags. The wire racks fit perfectly in the closet and the bags hold each project I’m working on which makes it easy to pick up and stuff in the closet when company comes over or when I go somewhere. And I always tell myself no more yarn till I use up a lot more of this that I have.
I have small plastic rubbermaid boxes for cotton yarns, and bigger rubbermaid tubs for larger skeins. I try to keep it separated by (1) yarns that are for a specific project and (2) yarns that aren’t for anything special, leftover yarn, etc.
And, like most everyone else, current projects in one of my zillion tote bags.
🙂
I organize mine in open wood bins. One section is for fine weights and sock yarns. The other area is for yarns with the pattern. That way I can see things ready to go, and keep everything in view
I keep mine in drawers since I basically have a whole dresser dedicated to crafts. Unfortunately, my yarn drawer is proliferating and slowly but surely taking over my other drawers. I started out with one yarn drawer and now I have two…I hope the yarn doesn’t take over my room 🙁
It starts out in bins but ends up EVERYWHERE!
When I first started crocheting I could not believe people would have so much yarn. Now…. I’m becoming one of those people. It took me 18 years to show my husband all my shoes and bring them out in the open now I plan on hiding my yarn where I used to hide my shoes. Seriously though I had a mesh hanging organizer I’d kept around knowing one day it would come to use. So I sorted by color and thickness, within weeks I out grew that and now have started to use plastic containers, but I think I’ll look for more of the mesh organizers I like being able to see all the yarn and the colors
Not real organized, keep my yarn in a large plastic bin.
I separate by fiber and color. One whole closet is shelves only, separating the different yarns with square boxes facing out. I also use the zippered bags from other linens to store different lots of yarn. And then there are plastic bags, and knitting bags with projects inside, and clear tubs, and…. I keep adding to the closet!
I have my yarn in cube towers. I have four of them floor to ceiling and then totes in the closet for the wool and wool blends so they are in the dark and in totes to keep away any little bugs from sneaking in.I occasionally teach children to knit so my needles and spare looms are in a rolling tote and the kids yarns (bulky basic like lion brand Hometown) is in totes to be able to grab and go quickly to teach.
I keep mine in big plastic totes under my bed … overflow goes into crates and I swear off buying anymore until I am down to just totes…I never keep my promise though ….
I keep all my yarn in totes. I put each project in a tote & take out 1 to 2 skeins at a time that I keep in a zippered bag (to keep yarn clean) & then the whole project is placed in a tote to keep it all clean!
My stash isn’t huge, but so far it is working for me to sort by VALUE…as in depth of color. The light tint go together, the mediums in another bin, and the darks in a third one. I’ve been experimenting with Navajo knitting so weight isn’t as important to me as it might have been otherwise.
I store my yarn in totes by project with the directions/pattern included. For the not identified yarn stash, I organize in the totes by yarn weight. Then, for the left over yarn from projects, I have one large tote. I keep 1-2 totes ready for finished projects, ready to be gifted.
I have stackable storage drawers. Yarn is sorted by type of yarn. When I have a project, I put what i need in a reusable bag to keep the yarn clean and portable.
I have a set of 6 drawers in the multi-purpose room and it is full of different colour wool.
I bought a fishing rod bag to put my knitting needles in.
My yarn isn’t very organized. I keep yarn on hand for little projects like hats. It is all in boxes and totes. I even have some still in plastic bags. I have 2 carry all baskets that I use for projects that I am currently working on. I put the all the needed items (yarn needles, crochet hooks and scissors) in the pockets and the yarn and instuctions in the basket so I can take it everywhere and work on it whenever. I love yarn!
I am a beginning knitter, so I don’t have a very big stash. I have my yarn organized by color in square bins.
Separated by weights in totes of all sizes and sock yarn and dish cloth yarn are in their own storage box.
I try to organize by type of yarn, cotton, acrylic? Then I keep it together with clear bags from comforters or even those giant zip lock ones when I can find them. If it a smaller amount the gallon size works.
Clear PEVA Storage Chests from The Container store. They are supposed to be for sweaters, but I enjoy them as they’re chlorine-free,it’s better for the yarn and better for the environment
I sort my yarn by weight, then by color. I place them in see through plastic storage bins. When I am ready to do an afghan I pull my colors and place them in a see through plastic bag that has handles so that I have all the colors at hand. Then I can take it with me
I keep my worsted weigh in tubs. I keep the baby yarn in the plastic bag from a comforter set. The small left over yarn from previous projects I roll in balls and keep in ziploc bags.
I only have one type of yarn–red heart supersaver. But I store the ones I am not using in those bags you suck the air out with your vacuum hose. Then they can be tucked any where–under bed, basement. Nothing can get in and it fluffs right back up when you open the bag. I think they are called space saver bags.
Store my yarn in totes and use reusable grocery bag for current project.
I use the kids old school backpacks.
I’m not very organized. I have my yarns stored in tubbies. Current project yarn is kept together (mostly in shopping bags) on my “project shelves.”
Mine is in my craft closet in plastic bins seperated by weight.
I use hanging shoe and sweater organizers! I sort by yarn type and color. There will never be enough hours in a day to work up all I have!! Thanks! Look forward to the new blog and all the ways people organize!
I have plastic rubbermaid-type drawers in my craftroom closet. The yarn in these, yarns that I’m not currently using is organized by weight and fiber type. The multiple projects that I have going on “live” in separate baskets…one in the living room, one in the craftroom, and a small bag in my purse for portable projects. It works for me!
Projects are in canvas reusable shopping bags and extra is in seperated totes.
I sort my yarn by weight then in zip lock bags by colour so I can see what I have. Then all the same weight goes into a labeled plastic see thru tub.
All of my yarn fits neatly in copy paper boxes. I have organized all my crochet hooks in two different brightly colored hook organizers — one for steels and one for yarn hooks. A plastic storage tote holds all my crochet patterns.
My organization is using my yarn as decorations all over the house in different types of baskets, etc. A few extra are in stackable containers
Organization?! hee hee, Hmm, by colour and by project. Projects have all the materials and pattern in clear shoe boxes from the dollar store. The stash is sorted by colour and housed in hanging cubbies in my craft closet. 🙂
I keep mine in the tubs my mother in law gave them to me in.
Keep my yarn organized? I think you’ve hit on a great idea! At the moment, it’s jammed into shoe boxes stacked in a living room shelving unit with opaque sliding doors. But organized is not part of the equation…
I try to keep my yarn organized by weight in plastic bags and the current project in a fabric tote that I can just grab and go. I must admit, keeping yarn organized is a losing project since I always seem to purchase more before I use up what I have on hand.
I use plastic storage carts w/drawers and separate my yarn by weight and have a separate drawer for scrap yarn.
I have a small closet with shelves installed where I have the yarn. Some is tucked behind (if I have multiples). Sadly, I need a bigger closet as my stash is starting to accumulate on the floor too!
Like so many others, I use the big plastic totes with lids and each one has a different weight of yarn, from doily thread to bulky and everything in between. I also keep one beside my chair that holds my current project, keeps the cats out of my yarn, not good for them, & they certainly aren’t good for the project. lol.
I keep my yarn separated by fiber. Yarn I am not currently using is kept in clear vinyl zipper bags, and yarn I am currently using is in a muslin lined wicker basket (like a laundry basket). WIPs each have their own tote bags to make knitting or crocheting on the go easier.
Organized? Well I have accumulated quite a stash now. I have it a little organized I guess. I have the clear bags from sheets and bedspreads that help keep yarns for a certain project separated, otherwise I have tons hidden away in drawers. Gotta keep it out of sight from the cat and my hubby! lol
I always look for the plastic, zippered sweater and blanket storage bags, as those are the two types of projects I work on the most. I put the all the yarn, the pattern, and any sudries like zippers, buttons, ribbon or fabric for linings or backings, in an approrpiately sized bag. Then when I want to start a project, I can just choose from my “ready-made kits”. If the finished object is a gift, I often give the bag along with it.
I use space bag cubes. It’s amazing how much yarn you can fit in them. I write out index cards on yardage, grams, size, how many skeins, and cut a piece for color. Keep all of those organized in a plastic ziplock bag duck taped to the cube. Because they hold so many I can always get away with “needing more because I don’t have that much” comment to my husband!!!
I have it everyware. I store the bulky and less used garment in large tubs in a closet. I have boxes between the wall and my bed. With more current along with brand new in a closet shelf. I keep partial balls in a drawered unit next to my reclined in living and the rest in a closet in dining room. I guess everywhere. Lol
i keep my yarn in big stackable plastic rubbermaid drawers, ongoing projects in tote bags; everything in it’s place. accesories, hooks and needles are all together in one of the tote bags. when i had the big house, things were different. my house is too small now to have everything all over.
Mine yarn is not very organized at all. I need lots of help with this. It keeps creeping out of the closet onto the floor. I fear it will strangle me one day : )
I actually made a room for my yarn, its Nana’s Yarn Room, tv, couch hey its great. I use the closet as a storage, put my yarn in the closet cloth organizers that hang over the rod, then I have plastic containers for overflow-the best bags that I carry projects in our magazine bags that I found at Walter Drake…they are great for toting projects and storing yarn, oh and I collect the shopping bags you can get at stores for 1.00 or more– they are great to carry projects from room to room–
I organize my yarn by weight and then by color. They are stored in large clear totes. I have 8 of them currently in use.
I recently organized all my yarn…I wound all my skeins using my yarn winder and all my new balls are in three baskets in plain view in my dining room. I like to look at my stash…I do the same with my beads, I string them if I can and hang them all over the house until I decide to do a project. I think the beautiful colors of yarn should be enjoyed daily!
My husband is ‘at this moment’ building new shelves & cabinets (my design) in a room we designated as our Office/Craft room! I’m so excited! So… my yarns are in large, lid closing bins for dust free keeping (except for what I’m working with at the moment :’]).
I keep my yarn in cubes and sort it according to type of yarn and by color. I also bag complimentary colors together to use for Prayer Shawls.
I get clear totes and organize my yarn by weights and colors, then I just need to get the tote out I need and can start on my project sooner!
I use old suit cases to keep my yarn and tools in order. Each suit case has a label discribing what color and type. They can be stacked and grabbed quickly when needed. I use pencil cases to keep needles and hooks in order. Patterns are kept in suit cases also, I use small carry bags with current projects in progress, to be grabbed when needed to be done. The suit cases can be moved or tucked away or taken to a friends house to exchange wool and patterns.
I purchased cubes, stacked the open end out (so you can see the yarn) and have the yarn organized by color in the various cubes. I currently have 9 cubes with the skeins laid length wise so that I can see how much of one color I have. Works perfect when I want to grab a skein for a quick project.
I keep my needles in vases. I purchased 3 clear vases, put marbles in the bottom so they wouldn’t tip over and divided by size and length. For my double pointed and circular I put them by size in sandwich baggies and put them in a shoe box. Easy to find both double pointed and circular when needed.
I keep mine in clear storage bins, by maker, color and weight, so when I ‘m ready to make something, I go right in and pull it out and get started. I only have 10 bins that of the 106 qt size, that are full and trying to keep from buying more! I inherited a lot of my mother’s stash when she passed away many years ago. Then there is the continuing story of my cross-stitch supplies………. that is another story in itself.
I keep the bulk of my yarn in a large wicker hamper. The scraps are in a clear zippered bag that a comforter came in. My crochet thread is in a clear plastic tote. My WIPs are kept in cloth tote bags with the pattern. The bags were freebies from various hospitals, organizations, etc.
