While the internet is awesome for finding new patterns and free patterns for crochet and knit projects, it can be easy to look over some really nifty things. What if you could plan out your variegated yarn before you start your project? What if you could make a pattern from a photo?
Good news – you can! All with just a few clicks around the world wide web. Get ready, because these tools are a lot of fun!
Planned Pooling – Variegated yarn is great for a lot of projects, but did you know you could plan when the yarn color changes? Yes, it’s true and you can check it out for yourself to see just how this tool works. Basically, you do a gauge swatch with your variegated yarn and see how many stitches appear in each color. The, using the app, you can essentially plan out how the entire piece will look based on the number of stitches across and the amount of colors. Though the examples are knitting, I have seen this done in crochet by using this tool. Here is an example as seen on Planned Pooling:
Stitchboard – If you’ve ever crocheted an afghan from a chart before, you already know how charts work and how awesome the results look. If you want to know how to make your own chart, you’ve come to the right place! Let’s say you have a pretty picture, a logo, or even a quote that you want to crochet. While you can always cross-stitch your design on top of an afghan, Stitchboard will help you create a chart with your image. Sounds awesome, right? I decided to give it a go myself and try out this tool with AllFreeCrochetAfghanPatterns text to see how it looks.
Here’s the image I created:
And here’s the chart:
Totally cool, right?! This tool can make charts for cross-stitch, knitting, and even beading. The possibilities are endless!
Which yarn technology tool will you try first?

Hi everyone. My mother used to crochet baby blankets for all grand kids, and then great grand kids. She passed away in April and never taught me how to crochet them! She used a very large wooden hook. It was a single crochet blanket but each side was a different color. For example, one side white other side baby blue. There were strands on the edges that she just bound in a satin blanket edging that she hand sewed on. Can someone please tell me how she did it? Did she just go through one side of chain — end, turnaround, and with new color go only through the other side of chain? Need your help because I want to carry on this tradition for my grand kids! Thanks, Dana.

Where can I find this pattern?
This is not the pattern. I think it’s just a single crochet using a VERY large wooden crochet hook and going through only one loop of chain with one color — ending and starting another color for the other side going only through 1 loop of chain. What do you think?
I’ve just read your post from August. Did you ever find the crochet instructions for the baby blankets your mother made? Go to http://www.interlockingcrochet.com — this might be helpful if, in fact, the technique is interlocking crochet. Did you find anything helpful on YouTube? There are several instructional videos for interlocking crochet.
What you are describing sounds like Interlocking Crochet. I haven’t tried it yet, but you can find a book through Annie’s Attic, or there may be other places you can find the book.
Yes, Dana . As Claudia says, it is interlocking crochet. Check out Tanis Galiik on Youtube. Keyword, interlocking crochet. They are beautiful patterns. I crochet baby blankets for charities, and I have done a few of the interlocking blankets. I checked Bethintx1 for her tutorial on interlocking, but I did not find one. I only saw Tanis Galik. She also gives you step by step like Beth.
Played with the pooling tool, had a few nice patterns appear and when I hit favorite, the pattern changed. The colors that appeared were not close to the ones I selected either (I picked off the color chart). I am guessing because I entered numbers incorrectly?
Not really knowing how to answer the questions asked by the tool, to get the pooling expectancy of a yarn I am guessing the errors by the tool were my fault.
For me, it isn’t “dumb person friendly” enough. For not having read instructions on how to enter the information asked for. When I opened it I was hoping to physically measure color lengths in the yarn, enter a needle size, and stitch type and have it calc what the project might look like when finished to a whatever (sts/inches) x whatever (sts/inches) finished dimensions. Just my two cents anyway. It would be handy to have on yarn seller websites/ stores so you could pick the best looking yarn for your project. I probably wouldn’t buy it for personal use, but it would be a tool I would go to on a stores website. Cheers though, and good luck developing!
I’m trying to find the pattern for Fire Engine Red Trellis Blanket. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
It appears that the blanket pattern has been taken down by the blog owner. I’m researching.
